Paramount Pictures has just released the first full theatrical trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. Forget about the teaser trailer and Super Bowl ad, this theatrical trailer is 1:55 of awesome air, water, earth and fire bending not to mention appearances by Uncle Iroh, Lord Ozai and Princess Yue of the Northern Water tribe.

Do I know way too much about something based on a Nickelodeon children’s cartoon? You bet! But there’s a good reason; Avatar: The Last Airbender may have been on a children’s television network, but the storytelling, art style and top notch action scenes surely were made for adults to enjoy. Right?

With this trailer we finally get a full look at what Shyamalan has in store for us this July and from the looks of it, this film is not only going to be amazing, but its finally going to return M. Night back to his former glory as a top-notch director and storyteller.

Enough of me blabbing, watch the trailer and see what I mean…

Maybe it’s because I’m speaking as someone that’s a fan of the original series, but this film looks wonderful all around. The set pieces are beautiful, the bending is better than what I could have pictured in my head. Sure, we don’t get the quick glimpse of Appa that we had the Super Bowl ad, but you can  take a look at the Last Airbender toys to see what he’s going to look like.

It was totally worth waiting an extra couple months for them to fine-tune the CGI. This trailer has given me everything that I could have wanted and more. I have no qualms about saying that The Last Airbender is now my no. 1 must-see film of 2010…. And yes, I’m including Iron Man 2.

…that’s saying a lot.

What do you think of the trailer? Do you think it’s as good as I thought it was? Is M. Night going to rise back to the top or is this just going to be another “plants kill people” movie?

The Last Airbender is set to be released in theaters nationwide on July 2.

  1. You aren't Asian. You're an Uncle Chang.

  2. Jess,

How convenient to call yourself Asian as if you were 100% one only to argue for the other side, a side I dare say you are more in line with than Asian. Now I'm not asking you to pick a side but don't f'n tell an Asian man to shut up on the grounds that you're Asian too. That's despicable.

How about you try to state your case from another point of view other than being Asian which clearly you are not? You can't can you? You'd come across as a racist to everyone which you already do in my eyes.

  3. I have nothing against white people. Don't put words in my mouth. Stick to the issue at hand. Instead you try to defame me by going off topic.

  4. Yup! I did hear that. The CGI in that scene looks really amazing.

  5. I have always been a fan of M. Night Shyamalan, even though the quality of the movies and the stories are not always great. But this looks really awesome! I can't wait to see it!

  6. Awesome! This is how they should've done the new Karate Kid movie. That's the direction they should've take it in. Right now, it looks like a complete joke! Will Smith's kid can not act.

  7. The trailers look cool. But I have one concern: so far, not one character has racked a smile in any of the trailers. It will be a complete disaster if Shamaylan doesn't carry over the rich humor of the series.

  8. Seriously out of the whole trailer I'm only worried about 2 things. It looks great but I get the feeling he might make it too dark… its Night's bad habit anyway but it could be good despite this. One of the best things about the show though is that they are so playful and fun between battles. It makes you really identify with what the characters are put through when you constantly see them as the children they actually are. The only other complaint I have is Uncle Iroh. He looks way too serious. Again the best thing about him is that he is secretly powerful. He is fat and jolly but then when he gets serious he is much more fearsome because of how unexpected it is and simply because of his size and that he obviously knows how to use it. The actor they have for him really doesn't seem to fit the character I've gotten to know. And he was seriously the best character in the show. My other favorite is definitely Taff. Just thought I would throw those out to see what you guys think.

  9. I definitely feel that the dark element is what will bring the movie to a realistic stand point for the viewer, look at the remake of batman? major success. no if, ands or buts. if you watched the show itself i mean that you could sense the serious undertone of the whole show. the lost of anng's people, appa, and being the avatar. then kitara loving the avatar, losing a mother, a father captured, toph, dealing with being blind and rough and her parents feeling she cant acomplish as much being blind, and then theres sokka, the one with out bending powers, but falls in love alot he may be a comdic relief, so let it be known this move is going to do well! and this whole freaking asian thing is so stupid, i myself am a mixed asian and i find it that the actors they picked are fine, this stupid racebending fasade is like bring more attention to it now and its going to be huge!

  10. god, seriously stop comparing movies to others this is in a whole other league with a whole different budget, seriously, who cares as long as the story is done justice, and i who happens to be asian and white and love the whole avatar story line, think its going to be great. oh seriously if it was about race and everything else then what about the characters voices, heres an example, ” man that dude sure sounds really american, or white, but he looks asian. OMG! seriously, well he should be white if he sounds white, or he should sound asian if he is asian….” come on now your seriously going with the argument of its not true to the story. by being jaded and saying its about the race? let it go.

  11. ok seriously, drop the race card like i said earlier to another person, if you wanted to get so serious into race, why do some of the cartoon voice actors sound white? hmmmm…..heres a point you could say that all of them should be asain right since you have a problem, with them being white washed, then hows about sound washed. seriously if you are asian like i am you will apprecate the story and how its acted out and what seriously is going on, like the serious issues in the show, that were delt with, the show didnt bring up color just issues that every race goes through, I being a fan, definately looked at the actors and said ok sure there not asian but if the story is being told ok fine the whites are from the north and the asians are from bah sing say the east and the far east is the fire nation, indian descent seriously who cares as long as the story is on point.

  12. seriously dexter,

I hate that asian's are not in the main spotlight, when needing to be shined on, me struggling around so many who are white or black, and trying to find myself in the mist to say i am something, but then get smacked down by people of my own descent. seriously you dont know me, i speak 4 different languages ive traveled across to other countries and fought for this nation its so odd that in other asian countries that see these movies, they dont even care, but in american oh god forbid, and for one i never told aznman to shut up nore am i defaming aznman, if you look at it seriously lets get down to it wit the show if we were going tit for tat. I can say man those characters sound totally white, when with what im seeing is asian characters on the screen. I could go off saying that is a false interpertation of an asian and how they would sound in a “fantasy created asian cultured world” but get this its created by 2 white males and the key word of the statement they gave is fantasy! and the movie is following the story not the likeness of the characters of a show.
