Our good friend Jordan Hoffman over at UGO has provided this new ad for M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender, which will air during the Superbowl this Sunday.

For those of you who were not impressed by The Last Airbender teaser trailer that dropped back in June of ’09 (I was personally ‘blown away’ by it icon razz The Last Airbender Superbowl TV Spot ), this new ad definitely provides some visual incentive for you to loosen up and admit that this could be a really kick-ass movie.

Shyamalan is certainly a skilled director, although his latest offerings (Lady In The Water, The Happening) haven’t been too good. However, the young auteur has taken a step back from his usual trend of only writing and directing films he himself conceived, and is instead building upon the foundation of the popular anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender - which Shyamalan recently praised for its philosophical themes and cool action.

When you get a visionary filmmaker working off of an acclaimed property that he understands and respects, you would expect the final product to be a pretty epic and glorious adventure for movie goers.

Well, from the looks of this Superbowl ad, The Last Airbender is going to deliver just that:

Finally, M. Nights’ awesome directorial style being put to good use! If Unbreakable didn’t tip you fanboys off back when: this is the guy we need directing some big-budget comic book flicks!

Despite his missteps, I’m still a big M. Night fan because A) He’s from my small corner of Pennsylvania and B) He’s a bonafide storyteller. The older I get, the more I’m starved for filmmakers who are actual storytellers – i.e., people who understand that film is simply another medium for telling a captivating story. When you can do that as a filmmaker, people will always respond. I expect that beyond all this cool-looking action (and it looks pretty freaking cool, BTW), The Last Airbender will be anchored by a well-told story.

This film is quickly moving up my most anticipated list for 2010. Can’t wait to see the ad in HD on my big TV this weekend!

What do you think of the new TV Spot for The Last Airbender? Is M. Night back to peak form, or not?

The Last Airbender will be in theaters on July 2, 2010

  6. That was EPIC!!!! Man that just pumped me up for this movie, i hope it keeps true to the story as well. The Bending looked great.

  7. Reviews on AICN have been mixed to say the least though, so don't hold your breath.

  8. looks totally awesome and MAN does that kid look like Aang. I hope he can pull off his complex personality as well.

  9. In the show, the world wasn't consumed in darkness.
Other than that, great TV spot.

  10. Reviews? They review trailers now? Lol

  11. Oh hell yes! Thanks for the Appa spotting!!!

  12. The action scenes and bending look fantastic. If the actors can capture the great dynamic between the main characters then this movie will be awesome. I'm really looking forward to the full trailer now.

  13. Looks awesome

  14. This has officially become my must see movie of the year.

  15. Instead of being a smart ass, go on AICN and look for the reviews they have from the Arizona screening.

  16. It was interesting to see that both guys hadnt seen the tv show, i would like to see a review of a fan too. Oh well maybe some more will get submitted.

  17. The bending effects look good.
    But what's with the soundtrack??
    Totally doesn't fit.

  18. Kid looks weak. The martial arts performances looks even weaker. Choice of lenses for the camera are terrible. And most importantly… where are all the Asians?

  19. Awesome.. It's moving up my most anticipated list as well, Kofi!

  20. Uh… in Asia?

  25. this is so awesome and I 'm happy that sites like screenrant and /film are supporting M.Night . I just wish the show was more famous .

just go to 0:18 and you can see Blue Spirit spirit fighting side by side with Aang

  26. Heh. I wasn't anticipating it as much at the time we put the list together. :)

  27. This is the higlight of my day. Is this the full trailer that will be played during the super bowl, or is it just a small cut of it? for it seems a little short. And does anyone know when the toys are coming out?

  28. This is the complete superbowl clip of LAB ,you would have to wait until Percy jackson is released on Friday for the full trailer which will be 2 mins long .

no idea about the toys :(

  29. Wow, I was hoping for the best for this film. I was a little inspired by some of the photos and the teaser before. Looked like they were making a respectful effort at making the film. But this ad, now I'm really looking forward to the finished product. It's starting to look like they've really tried to capture the original material. Wow! I'm gonna watch it again.
