‘Last Airbender’ Hi-Res Image Gallery (Featuring Appa!)

As the release date for M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of The Last Airbender approaches, Paramount is entering the final phase of its promotional campaign by releasing a whole host of TV spots, and today, hi-res images from the film.

There’s a lot of anticipation for The Last Airbender (especially amongst fans of the Nickelodeon cartoon upon which the movie is based). However, along with that anticipation comes a lot of trepidation, as M. Night Shyamalan’s track record as a filmmaker has had more blemishes than successes as of late (see: The Happening - or rather, don’t).

Airbender fans have been nitpicking at this film during its entire production, and the current consensus is that the film looks like a triumph in terms of visual splendor (Paramount has exploited that buzz by converting the film into 3D). However, there is wide-spread speculation that the dramatic acting of Airbender‘s young leads seems to be flat and hollow – especially that of star Noah Ringer, who plays Aang, the titular Last Airbender. (I won’t even get into the controversy over the cast’s lack of Asian actors. We’ll keep the lid on that can of worms!)

Well, images can’t inform you about acting quality – but they sure can look pretty! Also included in the gallery are some great looks at Appa the Sky Bison, who is a fan-favorite of the series. Check out our gallery of pics from The Last Airbender and then tell us if you think they’re enough to sell you on this film:

What do you think – do the visuals of the film look good enough to get you in the theater? Are you happy with the way Appa turned out (and have you seen Momo yet)? Are you worried about the story and/or acting in the film? Do you have confidence that Shyamalan has done well with this property?

All these questions will inevitably be answered when The Last Airbender blows into theaters (3D and 2D) on July 1st.

  1. Being an Air Bison I think they did well making it look real. I still cant wait for this. After already making plans for midnight on the 1st they push it back a day.

I still hope I can find a midnight showing.

  2. Psyched for this movie.

  3. Can’t wait! Have been watching the cartoon version and have found that I’ve missed some episodes. So I’ve definitely been enjoying them.

As for the lack of Asian looking actors… if you watch the cartoon you’ll see that many of the main characters don’t have that characteristic. The only one that really comes to mind is Zuko so I’m not worried about that.

    • You are right, but still: the characters from the TV-show aren’t Caucasians either. The water-tribes are mostly based on Inuits, which makes perfect sense.
Logically most of them are based on a mix of African and Asian people: they are 2 of the oldest people in the world and they have always been working outdoors.

      Btw: Go Oranje!

  4. Yip yip!

  5. I don’t need his res anything to be excited about this film.
I found the TV show fascinating (for the few episodes I was lucky enough to see).
And – unlike what seems like 99.9% of this forum’s participants – I am an unconditional fan of M. Night Shyamalan. In my eyes, the man can do no wrong.

    • “Man can do no wrong” is a bit much, but for the most part I agree. Its just the happening that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Funny movie though, if you dont try to take it seriously. As for this movie, as long as he doesn’t include a completely unneccessary surprise plot twist at the end, I’ll sign on for this and the two potential sequels.

  6. The first video review is on youtube. You can find it through IMDB but the guy praises the movie.

    • Yeah he does, he saw it in advance. I can’t wait! Completely psyched!

  7. I have high hopes for this film. This is by far my most anticipated film of the summer. The count down is almost over and Appa looks great.

  8. i cant wait to see this, and i hope he does unbreakable 2 next.

  9. I am excited to see this film. I wonder if the whole relationship between Appa and Aang are gonna be explored. Some of the best episodes are based on their master/ pet thing. Such as when Appa was nabbed by those bandits and Aang nearly killed somebody over it. That was a strong moment.

Also Boomey would make a good back-up character for this movie, but i doubt he’ll show up in this film. It would make more sense in the second since it’s a Earth element based storyline.

I saw the review vid on Youtube so I will give Shaymalan one more chance at redemption.

  10. Can’t wait

  11. You had me at Hello!!!

    • Lol………

  12. The visuals are stunning. Appa looks even better in that pic than he does in the trailer. I saw momo for like 3 seconds so i couldnt really get a good look at him. If the acting is as bland as it is in the trailer than hopefully the action will make up for that. Even the voice actors of the series gave them more character than they are portrayed in the trailer. Not really worried and im not a big fan of m. but it looks like this is going to be a blockbuster for nickelodeon

  13. It’s looking more and more gorgeous all the time. Sham-hammer might be headed back in to the “Hit movie” category, but I won’t make any bets.

Only thing I’m still not convinced with is the fighting and acting ability of kids. But as the audience will be kids I guess they’re not gonna see this for the acting:P

  14. I hate the way M. Night Shyamalan made Appa and Momo look! The colors are all off and Momo’s ears aren’t all black and Appa’s face isn’t all black! Also, the actors…Horrible choices. I am a huge Avatar fan who is very disappointed.

  15. Appa! You got to love that fat mofo lol
