Netflix Picks Up ‘The Killing’ for a Final Season 4

The Killing just can’t die. AMC’s former one hour murder-mystery drama about Seattle based detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder (Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman) came back from the dead after a post-season 2 cancellation. But when the show didn’t receive the kind of ratings or buzz it did in season 1, the network cut the cord once more. That is, until Netflix got involved. Well, more involved.

The Killing‘s surprising season 3 came as a result of a production deal between AMC, Fox Television Studios (who owns the show), and Netflix that saw new episodes appear on the streaming service just three months after broadcast. That deal reportedly came about after talk of a full-fledged shift over to Netflix, but more than a year later, that is exactly how The Killing will get its six-episode fourth (and final) season.

Here’s Netflix rep Cindy Holland on the decision to rescue The Killing:

“The rich, serialized storytelling in ‘The Killing’ thrives on Netflix, and we believe that it is only fitting to give Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder a proper send off. [...] We are looking forward to offering fans – both existing and new – a series that we know is perfectly suited for on-demand viewing.”

Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how “perfectly suitedThe Killing is to the on-demand model due to Netflix’ less than revealing ways with regard to ratings, but despite the minimal six-episode commitment, the streaming giant had to have other reasons besides being fans or wanting to provide closure.

One of those reasons could be that, in this risk averse entertainment era, it may sometimes seem like a safer bet for Netflix to add an established show in a growing genre (The Bridge, FOX’s Broadchurch adaptation) to their brand than it is to develop one from scratch. Often praised as incredibly bold, Netflix is certainly not reckless in the way that they are building their lineup. Their deals with established creators like Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black), David Fincher (House of Cards), the Wachowskis (Sense8), Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development), and Marvel prove that they’re always building on solid ground.

Does that mean that fans of other canceled shows should begin to have hope that Netflix might bring their beloved shows back from the dead thanks to the surprising resurrection of The Killing? Not necessarily. But with Netflix, we really never know what makes sense to them until it makes sense to them.

  12. I watch the series over and over. I LOVE it! Thank you Netflix for your excellent taste, until the new Orange Is the new black. Gross. That show is awful . Put the money in bringing a fifth season to The Killing

  14. The Killing is a fantastic series. I loved season 4! If you care about what Netflix viewers think, then perhaps you will, once again, bring back another season. Thanks Netflix for a series well worth watching,

  15. adore this series – just finished s4 and suffering from withdrawal. loved the ending – had been hoping for it all along. need s5!!! my favorite show – hands down!

  16. Thank you, Netflix for saving this show! It was tremendous!! A couple of nights ago I watched episode 3 and couldn’t sleep – I was concerned about Linden and Holder and the ending of the series. lol But, what an ending! I, too, will suffer withdrawal pains, and may need to go back and watch season 3 and 4 again. Linden and Holder will always be the best cop duo on film in my book.

    Keep up the good work!

  17. I thought the first 3 seasons were very well written and extremely interesting. It was so exciting to think we were going to get closure with the 4th season, and we did. However, to my utter shock and dismay, the writers decided to change the characters entirely and go from them speaking almost no profanity to making this show rated R for a ton of strong language! I could hardly stand to watch it. It was completely vile and totally unnecessary! They got through 3 seasons without it and then this! Why???!!! More realistic? Well it’s not realistic to think that characters go from fairly clean language to a total gutter mouth! Holder had been my favorite and I had been so looking foward to his character again. Instead they turned him and other characters into someone totally different from what they had been. What a dirty rotten shame to take a show that almost anyone could watch, and turn it into something it never had been and never needed to be. A show filled with filthy mouthed characters that made me cringe every few seconds or minutes because of the profanity spewing out of their mouths. I was glad it ended when it did. Had there been more episodes, I would have skipped it altogether. Yuck! No more Netflix originals for me!

  18. I agree with Jennifer. The fourth season was very difficult to watch with the constant stream of needless profanity. It is used so frequently that you get the impression the actors are a bunch of pre-pube teenagers trying to out do one another with bad language. My guess is a lot of people tuned out who otherwise would have stayed tuned in. The series may have gone post-four seasons had this radical character change not taken place.

  19. I dont want the show to end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please come back with more seasons! I am totally in love with detective Linden n Holder!
