When Will AMC Renew ‘The Killing’ for Season 2?

The Killing season 1 AMC When Will AMC Renew ‘The Killing’ for Season 2?

A success both in terms of ratings and critical praise, the hit AMC murder mystery The Killing seemed like a slam dunk to receive an early greenlight for a second season.

However, with just a handful of episodes left in season 1, there has been no official word from the network regarding its continuation into season 2 or beyond.

Unlike last year’s fantastically complex, but largely unwatched drama Rubicon, The Killing has been able to maintain a steady audience and tell a linear story that is chock full of complex characters. Rubicon unfortunately went down as the first series AMC couldn’t turn into a hit with viewers, and it was subsequently dismissed. With no word yet on the future of The Killing, does that mean the rain soaked whodunit is in for a similar fate?

Speculation seems to be falling, not on the performance of the show itself, but more along the lines of how to follow up on the storyline of ‘who killed Rosie Larsen?’ Two possible scenarios have popped up: 1) The murder investigation of Rosie Larsen will continue, or (at the very least) certain plot threads will transfer into the second season. 2) Detective Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) will find herself investigating similar crimes in a different locale – Sonoma, perhaps?

Whatever the decision, it is worth noting that the original Danish series Forbrydelsen has continued on in two additional series: Forbrydelsen II & Forbrydelsen III (due in 2012), so the suggestion that The Killing was, fundamentally, a one-and-done type of occurrence can be dismissed. Besides, if Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s that one good turn definitely deserves another (and another, and another).

Series star Mireille Enos doesn’t seem too worried about whether she’ll be reprising her role as the smile-phobic detective Sarah Linden in future installments of the series. Echoing comments made by executive producer Veena Sud (Cold Case), the storyline of The Killing has a future beyond season 1.

“I haven’t heard anything one way or the other. I know Veena has several seasons mapped out in her mind, but she hasn’t let us know anything yet.”

Though she hasn’t worked with AMC long, the actress is quick to point out that the lack of an official announcement (this late in the season) is typical for the network.

“Historically, AMC is slow about making those decisions, but everything is pointing in the direction [of a renewal]. And I know that they’ve been very pleased with the response. [Regardless] we’re all just so grateful, because we felt that we were part of something really special, and then to have the response come back and confirm that is really gratifying. And it encourages us that there may be the possibility to keep telling this story if there’s a second season.”

The Killing has been a solid performer for AMC, with its ratings, on average, matching those of Mad Men – the series that made the network what it is today. However, given the rigmarole Matthew Weiner and Co. went through recently, the lack of an announcement could actually be a sign things are going well.

There is no good reason The Killing has not  received (or will not receive) a second season renewal. While there is plenty of speculation to go around, the simple fact is that the network likely wants to let the first season’s storyline play out and reach its climax (which has been teased since the first promos hit the air last year) before announcing any sort of continuation.

At this point, it would be shocking if the series didn’t continue. The show has been far too big a success for the network to close the door on future seasons of The Killing.

The Killing airs Sunday nights @10pm on AMC.

  1. I really like the show and I hope it continues but I hope we find out who murdered Rosie and why this year. It already moves slow as it is so having to wait another year or two would be torture. I like the idea mentioned here about following Sarah to Sonoma. Or maybe tell the story about what happened prior to this season. Every person on the show seems to have a shady past. That could be interesting.

    • me too. I dont want to wait till next season to find out who killed Rosie. This weeks episode was the best ever. Kept me on the edge of my seat. excellent show with a new and unique personality.

I think that each season should be about a different victim and Sarah should decide to stay in Seattle.

    • They HAVE to renew The Killing! It is so good. What great writing!!!! Of course, we all want to know by the end of the season who killed Rosie but there are plenty of new stories that they could develop. Sarah could continue to be a homicide detective with new cases. PLEASE RENEW THE KILLING!!!!

  2. I’m actually more interested to see how they do a second season than I am in how this one turns out.

  3. The Killing is a great show and I hope it continues for another season with all of the great cast in Seattle.

    • Great show, Interesting characters, I like not knowing them so I see them as real people not as celebrities.

I can’t wait for the new series to start.
Please start the new series NOW!

      • I agree! My sister and I have been so engrossed in this mystery and are looking forward to it being continued. We want to learn who killed Rosie in the next season. I also agree with Diane (above) that the show should continue some locale, same characters, different cases. I love it not being glamorized, but true to life.

  4. The Killing is an incredibly boring show. Attempts at creating interesting dramatic moments fall flat, the characters are cardboard cut-outs, the dialogue doesn’t flow and every character sounds the same. For these reasons and many moreI request that AMC put us all out of our misery and cancel this show forever.

    • I kind of agree with you. I am not sure if I feel that horribly about it. I watched the first four episodes and I just didn’t care anymore. I hope that they keep it one season. I feel like if they tried milking this they will just end up with lower and lower ratings through out the second season and not renew it. I really tried liking it and I do see potential in it but it is rather boring when all is said and done. I think it would be a greater move to have a new show every year with just one season. They now have The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men. Switching it up every year would be nice rather than going through the motions and trying to suck everything that they can out of these characters that we come to love. That being said, I wonder where Breaking Bad can go from their last season and it will be interesting to see if they can keep it up to par with past episodes. Every season I feel like it could be their last but they somehow keep me wondering what the hell happens next. Dexter used to be a show like that and the last season was a complete bomb in my opinion, it wouldn’t have been bad if they called it something else and it was on the WB I suppose.

  5. I just love this show. It’s great and the actors play there characters extremely well. Kudos to AMC. This show has to be renewed.

  6. How many episodes will first season be?
Somebody says 20, somebody says 13.
    Any inf. about that?

  7. Love the series but I do wonder how a second season is possible especially keeping the main group of characters they have now and with resolving the murder of Rosie.

Of course nothing says Holder and Linden can’t stay a team and just work a whole new murder mystery next season. 24 was able to do it and cut certain characters while bringing others in. The Wire was also great at phasing out certain characters but filling the void with new just as interesting characters.

So I guess there really is room for a season 2.

  8. I am really hooked and after ep 11 i am looking forward to more of the linden holder partnership. I think they have the chemistry to be a great tv cop team. holders faith balances out linden’s self reliance to create a relationship that allows them to be themselves and to make each other better. I hope the rosie larsen case is the theme of season 2- i am attached to alot of the characters. I hope they dont cut it short. Plus, we all know it was richmond!

  9. I was sooo pissed when the season ended… When does the next season start?

    • i love the show but they told us we would know who did it we still do not and i cannot find any answers as 2 when the 2nd season starts and who was in the car at the end that asked the detective did they believe the photos and the detective said they bought it who was it i couldnt see

  10. I loved The Killing, and can’t wait for it’s follow up season. Great performers, writing, and directing. The entire season has been incredible, and I have good reason to believe that the show will be returning. This show has enough of a steady fan base to sustain the shows future, and now it’s up to the network to seal the deal. Unveil your pen AMC and sign on the dotted line. Thank you, and see you next season.

  11. i believe maybe it’s Holder’s sister in the car and maybe his sister is the senator’s girl…also i completely love Holder and i would love a sex scene…..hello!!!!!

  12. For me, the show has only begun. The fastest hour on TV ever. The Killing and Breaking Bad are both awesome shows.

  13. The show would do even better if it wasn’t on so late. Doesn’t air here in Mi until midnight.

  14. I really like the show i wish the cast real Somali’s people just like they do all the other languages other then that, am looking forward the second season.

  15. The Killing was so intense and we loved it …Please have it continue into another season…So many people are waiting for the return..and the actors are all great… loved it

  16. The Killing has me hooked, was upset when season one ended. Can’t wait for season 2. Please let me know ASAP! Sarah is my fav.

  17. Bring it back, excellent series, looked forward to each and every episode, are the writers ready? Leave us sittng on the edge of our seats a little too long.

  19. How could the Network pick up the series with out knowing if the writers had enough ideas to keep the story going for a few seasons. I think it’s outrageous to have viewers take time to watch the show and you are not sure if the series will continue? I am appalled by your network’s decision

  20. I love the Killing. It’s a great show, love the cast. Please, bring it back. My two favorite shows on AMC are The Killing & The walking dead. Love these shows, never miss an episode.

  22. when

  23. When will AMC renew The Killing season 3?

  24. love the Killing. Will there be a season 3 with a new killing. I hate it to end. Good suspense with lots of twists and turns.

  25. “What fools, nay tools, as Linden’s son might say, these mortal TV execs be, if renewal is not made and in the immediate offing. AND with Holder and Linden in place. And to snatch the action to Sonoma, unless the murder-Investigation-aborning, is to be too much of a minerally taste in the Estate Vintage as labelled (a merlot, maybe?), no, no Sonoma. And Holder, the series’ homerun champ in accent, stonerisms, reformisms, and kickassisms, as well as being the most impolitic TV character we viewers could really respect, after we got over the arrogance and cruelty of House and Patrick Jane (a shovel to the head, now that’s really going to make me really want to rahrah for him in syndication). The Killing without the constant rain-tears of Washington State, being filmed with the cheaper per episode Canadian rain-tears would be like Casablanca without the almost irony of fog outside Rick’s Place.
Count me as a viewer that watches not a little, but not a lot of TV, but sign me on as a viewer hoping for more of “The Killing”; but start fracking-about with the locale, and especially trying to make a “Killing” without a Linden AND a Holder, and I promise you that “from where the sun now stands (and the rains now fall), I will watch no more forever”. Apologies to the Great and Wise Chief from whom I stole and miscontexted and misquoted the last line of his magnificent, poetic, and put-the-White-Man in his pathetic
final great speech. But it seemed fitting in context of the last scene of the new mayor, so righteously oilily played by Billy Campbell (whom I was lucky to have seen on Broadway), afixing to go awhoring with the casino vultures, most of whom either were or coulda/shoulda been charged some crime on the waterfront of Rosie Larsen’s death.

  26. Love the show watched complete 1st season on netflix please show season 2 would love to find out who the killer is , As far as making it about different cases everytime please dont do that that would be like watching svu which I have watched every season of that as well love these shows . thats why i was researching to find season 2.
