I first got a look at director Kathryn Bigelow’s (Point Break) newest film, The Hurt Locker, at this year’s New York Comic Con. I was blown away (no pun intended) by the segment that was screened for the audience, in which an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit tries to dismantle a hug car bomb before it goes off in a residential neighborhood.
The Hurt Locker (from what I’ve seen) is a taught, tense, action film that never once tries to get grandiose and force-feed you some message about the Iraq War, just pure action-entertainment. But don’t take my word for it, check out the full trailer for The Hurt Locker yourself:
The Hurt Locker stars Jeremy Renner (28 Weeks Later, The Unusuals) as a Sgt. William James, that reckless bomb diffuser you see in the trailer. Watching James’ back are his fellow members of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, Sgt. JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldrige (Brian Geraghty). The movie focuses on the bond between the three EOD Unit soldiers as they travel through Iraq, facing life and death with every job.
A while back, a fellow writer here at Screen Rant asked the question, “Will The Hurt Locker be boring?” I’d like to provide a friendly response to that question: No, no it won’t. Kathryn Bigelow does an excellent job filming the tense bomb disposal sequences without any sort of ambient music or loud sound, an eerie quiet that keeps you on razor edge, just waiting for that big boom to happen. The lead actors all seem to handle their roles well (especially the chemistry between Renner and Mackie), showing depths of real anxiety just beneath their faux cool.
Now that I think about it, I haven’t been so tense watching a movie since Speed, or maybe Executive Decision, and all I saw was one clip from The Hurt Locker. No telling how hard the full-length film is going to make me sweat.
The Hurt Locker will be getting a limited release in the U.S. on June 26, 2009. Hopefully a wider release will follow (if you go out and support it!).
