I didn’t notice any political themes other than we are a nation of abundance and Iraq is a nation of poverty.
That was the most obvious to me.
That theme was summed up in a brief scene towards the end of the film.

Sure there’s going to be some discrepancies of military protocol as with most war themed films. I felt that Hurt Locker had a contemporary “Rat Patrol” vibe that pulled off enough realism to keep your mind off protocol.
