Katniss and Cinna in the Hunger Games The Hunger Games Clip: Katniss Meets Lenny Kravitz

In less than a month we’ll finally see if The Hunger Games is really the next Harry Potter (as Lionsgate is no doubt hoping it is) or if it’s just another YA book turned major motion picture.

Lionsgate recently released a clip from the film, focusing on the meeting of protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) with Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), the stylist who designs her outfits for the titular Hunger Games.

While most of the citizens of the Capitol of Panem – the world of The Hunger Games – are contented with the Games’ existence, Cinna is considerably less contented, which is part of the reason why he sympathizes so much with Katniss.  In the clip below, Cinna discusses his unconventional plans for designing Katniss’ uniform. (SPOILER ALERT!) They involve fire.

Check out the clip:

If there’s one thing that feels a bit clunky about the clip above, it’s the constant infodump for the sole benefit of the audience. In the book, everything that Cinna says about sponsors and “coal miners’ outfits” and how they usually dress the tributes is the sort of thing Katniss would already know. Hence, it’s referenced almost exclusively in her internal monologue, as it should be.

Here, the dialogue is the vehicle for the exposition, which is a problem that YA fantasy/sci-fi adaptations – the early Harry Potters, for example – have run into before.

Hopefully, it’s less of a problem after most of the world-building of the film has been established early on. The trailers have, in this writer’s humble opinion, been fairly excellent so far, so let’s cross our fingers that that’s an indication of the overall quality of the film.

What say you, Hunger Games fans? Does the featured clip excite you? Get your Hunger Games blood going? Let us know in the comments.

The Hunger Games hits theaters March 23rd, 2012.

  1. I was a bit worried about Lenny Kravits playing my favorite character, but I actually thnk he’ll do a good job! I cannot wait for this!!!!

    • Oh, I just watched he clip and it gets me even more excited!!!! I think that the ‘infodump’ wasn’t too extreme, and it actually made sense.

  2. Wow, I never realized before how attractive Lenny Kravitz actually is! Lol hope these are as good as the books but I’m not holding my breath because they always seem to pale in comparison!

  3. I’m a red blooded, Steak Eating, gun totting, Godzilla lovin, Kung Fu movie watchin, Grizzly Adams admire’n American Man and I wanna see this movie!
Gonna take my 15 year old daughter as cover just in case…..

    • hahaha, Fantasic

  4. side note.
Yes, very cool to see Kravitz as Cinna.
But yet again we get another hunger games clip…that shows nothing of “the Games”.

  5. Looks good, and I disagree, I thought the “info dump” was subtle and gets the viewer needed information. The biggest problem with the difference between movies and their book origins is just that, the ability to “listen” to internal dialogue the protagonists may be having. It’s always hard to bring that to the screen in a reasonable fashion. I’m looking forward to seeing how well they bring The Hunger Games to life.

  6. still not sure if i want to check this out. i looks good, but idk if i want to spend my money to see it. maybe if some of my friends decide to go ill go with them we’ll see.

  7. It makes me so anxious to see the movie!

  8. I really hope this is good but it will never be Harry Potter. Ive read the Hunger Games books. Ive read the Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter books are just better than The Hunger Games on so many levels. That is why I think the HP movies will always trump THG. I will hold final judgement till I see the movie but based on the trailers and clips I dont see this being the success of HP.

  9. And how exactly can you compere Hunger games to Harry Potter the books coudnt be any different i dont get the comparisons. Besides i read first reviews saying Hunger games movie, goes deeper and wider then the books and we will know more then just Katniss perspictive i hope many an ansewerd questions will be ansewerd this makes me hopeful.
