Joe Dante’s freaky 1984 feature Gremlins definitely ranks as one of the craziest kids movies of the 1980s – though, some of his more recent films (Small SoldiersLooney Tunes: Back In Action) were terrifying for an entirely different reason.

Now, the filmmaker that gave us Mogwai is back with an intriguing international trailer for The Hole a new 3D adventure-thriller that involves teenagers learning important life lessons via encounters with scary creatures and supernatural forces.

Here is the official plot synopsis for The Hole:

“After moving in a new neighborhood, brothers Dane (Chris Massoglia) and Lucas (Nathan Gamble) and their neighbor Julie (Haley Bennett) discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home.  They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed.  With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE.”

The Hole has not yet secured a release date in the U.S., though it will hit theaters overseas at the end of September. Judging by the footage on display in both the previous trailer and this new one, The Hole looks like the kind of low-budget fare that could end up going straight to DVD/Blu-ray here in the states.

You can check out the new international trailer for The Hole below (via Empire), but be warned – anyone easily frightened by creepy clown dolls that talk, nails flying at the camera, rattling doorknobs, and raspy-toned voice-over narration might want to take a pass:

Some of the visuals seem Tim Burton-esque, but even cool visuals doesn’t make The Hole a must-see film.

In the end, The Hole doesn’t look as inspired as some of Dante’s best work – but it could be a good pic to check out if you’re looking for a way to terrify your (or a friend’s) children.

The Hole will be out in theaters over in the U.K. on September 24th, 2010. We’ll keep you posted on the U.S. theatrical, or DVD, release.
