Dude, Josh Rose, good thinking with Martin Freeman. He LOOKS perfect for the part. I never would have thought of him.

I think either McAvoy or Freeman would be great, not really sure about Tennant, although I liked him as Dr. Who - but maybe too much exposure recently in that role?

Glad so many remembered that Gandalf was not really an old man, he just appeared that way. It should be a lot of fun to see Sir Ian take another crack at that role, he did a wonderful job in the LOTR trilogy.

I don't know what it is about McAvoy that makes everyone think he'd be good for this part. For starters, I just don't see him playing a hobbit, but more importantly, I don't see him playing Ian Holm. That's the big thing here; they're not just hiring somebody to play Bilbo, they're hiring someone to play Bilbo as played by Ian Holm.

I honestly can't think of anyone else for that except for Martin Freeman. Not only does he look identical to a young Ian Holm, but he's got the same mannerisms and a similar sounding voice, neither of which McAvoy has.

I'm sure Jackson and Del Toro have a short list of actors they want for the part, and I'm sure McKellen has seen it. Hell, he might even have some say in it, and I'm sure that's what he was referring to back when he said he knew who'd been cast. There's probably one guy they want more than anyone, but it's not set in stone.

Age is not an issue for Gandalf. He does not age. He is not really even a man but assumes the appearance of an old man. So in OUR reality, I haven't really compared but I assume he doesn't look much different at all today from how he did in LOTR. And nothing a little makeup work can't cure. ;)

I would like to see McAvoy as Bilbo too.

I think the studios will require someone with world wide recognition for their talent, so they don't need to "sell" the actor. They will also want someone who has shown they can carry out the rigors of a large scale media tour since it is about Bilbo's adventures and McKellen may not feel up to carrying the load for the PR. But time will tell.

As for when that is...after Jackson's "Lovely Bones" is released in early December and McAvoy has completed "The Conspirator" in mid December - 2 years before "The Hobbits" release works out nicely.

Hey Vic,

I'm not sure where you (as in the staff) got the illustration of Ian above but, being an artist myself, I'm sure the original artist would like the credit. It's beautifully done.

@M-Cat

I believe Gandalf is over 1,000 years old during the Hobbit and near 2,000 in the LOTR, so there wouldn't be any difference in his appearance. Actually, if I remember correctly, he is an Istari and assumes the form of a man so I think he looks the same throughout his time in middle earth.

As far as Sir Ian is concerned, I'm sure they will make him look the same as he did in the triology.
