the hobbit movies Official Hobbit Movie Subtitles & Release Dates

It’s been known for some time now that the first half of Peter Jackson’s two-part film adaptation of The Hobbit would arrive in December 2012, with Part 2 tentatively scheduled to arrive a year later. Likewise, rumors over New Line Cinema registration ofย two potential subtitles for the movies popped up about three months ago.

Now New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., and MGM – all of which are involved in funding Jackson’s estimated $500 million new venture to Middle-Earth – have gone ahead and announced official release dates AND subtitles for the Hobbit movies.

As we previously speculated, the first Hobbit movie will be titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – followed by the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Tolkien fans should be even less surprised by the subtitle for Part 2 of Jackson’s Hobbit, seeing as that it’s also the name of the book that Bilbo Baggins writes about his wondrous adventures.

An Unexpected Journey is now set to hit theaters on December 14th, 2012. There and Back Again will follow suit just under a year later on December 13th, 2013.

In addition to splitting the original Hobbit novel in two, Jackson and his Lord of the Rings team look to use a flashback structure to recount the tale of young Bilbo and his “unexpected journey” with a pack of thirteen dwarves and a (relatively) younger Gandalf the Gray (Ian McKellen). Hence why Elijah Wood and Sir Ian Holm are also reprising their respective roles as Frodo Baggins and an elder Bilbo Baggins.

Principal photography on the Hobbit movies began over two months ago, but there’s still been a healthy amount of casting news recently. Word has since gotten out about actors like Stephen Fry, Lee Pace, and Benedict Cumberbatch appearing in the film – along with confirmation that Lord of the Rings trilogy stars like Hugo Weaving and Orlando Bloom will be back as well.

To reiterate: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will arrive in theaters next year on December 14th.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again is set to follow a year later on December 13th, 2013.

  1. An Unexpected Journey is pretty high on my list of most anticipated films of 2011. Thanks for the update, Sandy!

    • Make this 2012 and I am with you ! :)

      • Its release date is actually closer to 2013 though, unfortunately. Still a lot of time to go.

Still, I’ve learned that it’s never a good idea to wish the months and years away! But I’m looking forward to these movies for sure.

        • Agree with you…time and live is already too short !

        • That is so true. I can’t wait until the next Hobbit comes out. I was soo excited that I couldn’t wait for the first one to come out and now i can’t wait until the second one comes out.

  2. Besides the obvious (money and studio greed), I have no idea why they are splitting one book into 2 movies. It’s not a 750 page thing like Deathly Hallows. They easily could make this into one film.

Unless they’re still doing the original plan of having Part I be the book and Part II be the bridge film, but judging from the article, it seems like they’re just taking the one book and splitting it into two.

Regardless, Holiday Movie Season 2012 should be good! Star Trek 2, Man of Steel, and An Unexpected Journey. Looking forward to it.

    • star trek 2 is coming this summer

        • what is this occlumencia? just b/c some rnadom site has a therory that it may possibly delayed doenst mean it will be

          • In any case, it wasn’t going to come out THIS summer. It was going to be released summer, 2012.

            • thats what i said dumbass

              • don’t be a jerk ๐Ÿ˜‰

                • Thank you, Ken. :)

              • ACTUALLY, dumbass (since you very much more deserve that description), you said, “star trek 2 is coming this summer”. “This summer” is 2011, NOT 2012, which is what I said. Don’t insult someone while being a moron, yourself.

                It’s just bad form.

                • oh wow i made a typo and didnt notice CALL THE POILICE!!!!! [end sarcasm]

                  • a-bomb…

Typo it may have been, BUT you wrote it, then responded as an ass when you had an attitude about it.

                    • …excuse me…forgot to add the part “and were called on it”.

              • No you didn’t. You said “star trek 2 is coming this summer” It’s funny when people realize how stupid and wrong they were, but can’t admit it.

    • They’re shooting all the scenes that are told as stories by Gandalf in the book, which means they’re shooting way more than just the book. Examples stated in an interview back when the project was announced (sorry I don’t remember where to find it) included Gandalf infiltrating the Necromancer’s tower, and the White Council throwing the Necromancer out of the forest. I’m hoping that this is still the case…film production can be a fluid thing and script rewrites happen all the time.

    • I heard they are shooting the movie in 48 frames/second instead of 24 frames/sec … that is probably why they are splitting it into two part.

      • hehe

  3. tbh An Unexpected Journey is a pretty poor subtitle. that being said I love The Hobbit and this is very exciting for me.

  4. i wonder y the 2 hobbit movies r a year apart i mean i know thas how they did lotr but ud think since the hobbit is 1 book theyd do a 7-8 month gap like deathly hallows

    • Money, money, money.

      • if anything puttiong them out so far will cause them to make LESS money (ie POTC 2 and 3) (it wont hurt theses im just saying widen the releases wont make m ore money)

        • I wouldn’t use the case of POTC, but the Harry Potter case. Anyway, if the first film is very good and ends in a cliffhanger, then the second film will outdo the first one. Just a thought.

  5. Should be interesting. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo for December 2011, An Unexpected Journey for December 2012, There and Back Again for December 2013, Avatar 2 for December 2014 and Avatar 3 for December 2015.

Thank you! These should be fun holidays :)

  6. I am thrilled they are making The Hobbiit, even more thrilled that it (1) comes out on my birthday!!!!

  7. Regarding the Hobbit being broken up into two movies, I don’t mind. I don’t even care if the motivation was money – which I don’t think is the case here. If Peter Jackson hadn’t agreed with that, it wouldn’t have been done.

Somebody said “it would have been easy” to make this just one movie, and I agree, but at the same time, these novels contain so much information, so much detail, and so many interactions that I would prefer additional hours to cover everything as well as they can instead of cramming everything in just a few hours. And when the two movies are done, and released, you can always watch them straight to make it one movie.

Besides, they’re filming both movies at once, so there’s no risk of anything happening to suspend the second film. (The miracle of the Harry Potter movies is that they actually had the same cast on board for almost ten years!)

On a sidenote: I was very sick with bronchitis last November, and was on medication that made me very restless in the brain, and if it hadn’t been for the LoTR trilogy along with the Harry Potter movies keeping me preoccupied that whole week, I would have gone mad. For that reason I’ve made these movies my “sick day emergency movies”, and I’ll be more than happy to add the Hobbit movies to that particular collection :)

    • They will probably add some things that weren’t in the book because its a 2 parter, but that’s good, because Peter Jackson has 13 dwarves to develop! Also, they could include some other Tolkein mythology, like The Simarillion, the book of lost tales, and of course some stuff bridging Lord of the rings with the hobbit. No matter what, I know this movie will be totally awesome!

  8. I bet the duration of each THE HOBBIT movies will be shorter than each LOTR movies

    • Yup, that will be the case.

  9. Really looking forward to these films being released. The Hobbit was one of my favourite books as a child and hopefully the movies will present a great adaptation of this. Jackson did a great job on the Lord of the Rings so hopefully these 2 will be just as good.

  10. I don’t when “The Hobbit” will come out but I hope it is soon.

  11. I would like to know when the hobbit comes out on DVD.

  12. All this was helpful! I was gonna take my boyfriend to see it (we both love it) but it will have to wait!! :( thanks for the help with that ๐Ÿ˜€

  13. Actually. Every single person on this page is wrong.
THe next movie to come out in December of 2013 is titled “The desolation of Smaug” Then the third movie will be “there and back again” which is set to release in 2014. Who ever wrote this article needs to check their facts. Because you got it wrong :)

    • december is the last month of the year so the first part of the hobbit came out in december 13 or 14 2012 because january is the first month

  14. this why can they just put them out the some time and not end at the bad places i and hooked

  15. jen you are wrong they are right december is before january think before you speak

  16. my friends said the hobbit movie sucked ass but after watching it last night, I say that they in fact suck ass cause that movie rocked and followed the story line that I know very well…I cant wait for the next one to come out

  17. The second hobbit is called the desolation of smaug not there and back

  18. was desolation AND battle ever released as a 2 pack ?
