Liam Neeson in The Grey trailer The Grey Teaser Trailer: Liam Neeson Vs. The Wolves

Liam Neeson is one of the uncontested badasses of the big screen. Hence why people are already excited about his latest starring vehicle – the wilderness survival thriller, The Grey – which pits the Oscar-nominated actor against his most vicious foes yet: blood-thirsty wolves and Mother Nature’s wintery side.

A teaser trailer has been released for The Grey, which reunites Neeson with his A-Team director, Joe Carnahan. Are the two aiming to deliver yet another adrenaline-fueled thrill ride here – or do they have something a bit more thoughtful in mind (pun not intended)?

You might be surprised to learn that – assuming this teaser is not completely misleading – The Grey is more than just a raw and visceral “man vs. nature” tale. It’s also an intimate character study, which examines why Neeson’s Ottway is motivated to stay alive – namely, his love for his wife and (presumably) a sense of kinship between him and his fellow working class-types. So, in that sense, The Grey aims to be a cross between, say, The Edge and 127 Hours.

Here is the official synopsis for the film:

In ‘The Grey’, Liam Neeson leads an unruly group of oil-rig roughnecks when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements – and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt – before their time runs out.

The cast for The Grey also includes noteworthy names such as Dermot Mulroney (About Schmidt), Dallas Roberts (3:10 to Yuma), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), Nonso Anozie (Atonement), and James Badge Dale (The Pacific). However, this first theatrical preview is virtually all about Neeson.

The Grey certainly looks like a down n’ dirty adventure tale that pits its cast against the elements – literally, given that the film was shot on location in the frozen wilderness of Canada. That not only makes the action seem all the more authentic – and the threats against the characters’ lives legitimate – it should also accentuate the feeling of immediate danger that lingers throughout the film. Hopefully, this will also help make the encroaching pack of wolves come off as genuinely menacing – and not just like hammy, real-life monsters.

Besides, let’s be honest – doesn’t it look like the scene where Neeson fights a wolf with his (almost) bare hands will be worth the price of admission, on its own? icon wink The Grey Teaser Trailer: Liam Neeson Vs. The Wolves

The Grey will arrive in U.S. theaters on January 27th, 2012.

  10. Why are so many people on youtube upset over the portrayal of the wolves in this movie? Is Joe Carnahan on Al Gore’s hit list or something?

    • i have a problem with the wolves looking too much cgi-ish.

  11. WOW! If anyone likes the concept of “The Grey” then read “ALPHA MALE”, a thrilling book published around ten years ago. It’s about a hunter/guide who leads businessmen on a hunting trip in Alaska. They battle a wolf pack led by a large black wolf named Midnight. Main character and one survivor, fight to the death with black wolf leader. Similar story line, more expanded plot.

  12. Saw this movie tonight. AWE-SOME!
