Seth Rogen Says ‘The Green Hornet’ Is Still Alive

Last weekend, we told you that it looked like Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet was dead. After the news was reported by several sites and sources, Rogen has showed up to clear the air on his project.

In an e-mail exchange with HitFix, Rogen offered some details about production and current development.

“‘The Green Hornet’ has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc… [The studio heads] have every intention on making it, and assuming we’re able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibilty, it should still hit the release date.”

There are a few details also worth highlighting… Rogen’s position with this project has always been producer, co-writer, and lead actor, so his perspective is essential. He also confirms their search for a new director, after Stephen Chow stepped out of the chair over “creative differences.”

AICN confirms that Stephen Chow is still involved with the film. There has been little elaboration on their “differences” – perhaps it was the degree of comedy over camp, but I still can’t help but wonder how that will work out.

With Rogen at the helm, a comedic tone is nearly guaranteed; but whether it would’ve been more or less funny with Chow directing is unclear. The cheesy 1960s action show walked a fine line with Bruce Lee as “Kato” – the no-nonsense sidekick was more camp than comedy. And though the task of bringing Chow to mainstream audiences (yes, he’s been in U.S. released films, but he’s not well known) is similar to Lee’s U.S. debut, the two actors are vastly different; the same can be said about Van Williams and Rogen. Maybe if they didn’t add Chow or it wasn’t Rogen, a great remake would be in the realm of possibility. But successfully recreating classics has proved difficult and this will probably be no exception.

The Green Hornet is set to begin filming in the spring and is set for a June 25, 2010 release.
