CBS' seven-season hit series The Good Wife ended on an unexpectedly ambiguous note for main character Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), but the fate of supporting character Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) was also left somewhat in doubt. Fortunately for fans, the latter's story will continue with the spinoff series The Good Fight which is set to hit CBS All Access early next year.

In the new series, Lockhart -- formerly a powerful big city attorney and law firm partner in The Good Wife -- has found herself starting over in the wake of a Bernie Madoff-esque financial scandal that has wiped out her job and much of her savings. Teaming with her similarly impacted goddaughter Maia (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones), the pair join Luca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) in a new firm in Chicago. The premise is recounted in the trailer, which promises a darker momentum than the previous series.

Few other details have been released about the series, which is said to focus more on both the legal cases undertaken by the main characters and longer-term storylines involving behind-the-scenes drama and intrigue involving the local political scene, and the family of Leslie's character. The series has brought on the likes of Paul Guilfoyle, Bernadette Peters, and Delroy Lindo in supporting roles.

The executive producing team of Robert King, Michelle King, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Liz Glotzer, Brooke Kennedy, and Alison Scott are the driving force behind the new series, which is being widely viewed as a major test-case for the viability of the CBS All-Access streaming platform. That same platform will face another significant test in the spring, with the launch of  Star Trek: Discovery as well. Phil Alden Robinson will produce and co-write the first episode.

While the obvious question from many former Good Wife fans will be whether or not any storylines from that series will be continued or resurrected, but at this point producers aren't saying -- keeping the focus on the new plot threads for the new series. The Good Wife ended with the dissolution of the friendship between Baranski and Margulies' respective characters, and the implication that Alicia could be en route to a position of political power. That would leave the potential for Marguiles to reemerge in a new, possibly antagonistic role, but no indication has been made that this is planned at this time.

The Good Fight debuts on CBS All Access on February 19, 2017.
