following The Following Renewed for Season 2

Check out: ‘The Following’ Season 2 Details Revealed

Serial killer dramas have become quite the reliable sub-genre for television in recent years. Shows like Dexter and NBC’s upcoming Hannibal explore the dark and dangerous minds of killers on a weekly basis, and in many cases, audiences are fascinated with the results.

So when FOX launched The Following in January, the network received tons of advance buzz regarding the series. After all, the show is headlined by Kevin Bacon and is created by writer Kevin Williamson of the Scream films and current TV hit The Vampire Diaries. On that name recognition alone, The Following had a lot to live up to.

Only six episodes have aired, but already the show has met FOX’s expectations and received renewal for season 2. Kevin Reilly, chairman of entertainment at FOX released the following statement regarding the show’s return next season:

“From the very beginning, we felt Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega had created a high-
quality, edge-of-your-seat drama that could break from the pack, and it is exciting to see the
audience responding. Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy have given us two of the
most compelling characters on television and the entire cast is incredible. I’m delighted to have
this thrill ride continue on FOX for another season.”

Given the overwhelmingly positive response The Following has received since its premiere (including our own review), the show’s renewal for season 2 isn’t much of a surprise. The series’ unique take on the genre – which involves an incarcerated killer (Purefoy) with legions of disciples on the outside – lends it a more original approach to the slasher-of-the-week format of other series, and allows for a developing conflict between the two leads.

In addition, The Following‘s ratings already place it among the highest rated dramas of the season. It remains to be seen whether or not the show can sustain that audience over several seasons, but thus far, it appears that FOX has a bonafide hit on its hands.

Are you excited that The Following is sticking around for season 2? Let us know in the comments.

The Following airs Monday nights at 9/8c on FOX.

  1. ……..about time for some Great Prime-Time TV. Tired of all the reality based ho-hum. People still enjoy a great series, and we certainly have Great Prime Time with this series…..can’t wait for next season. Kevin Bacon rocks the role of Ryan…….The Followers will continue where Joe left off….GREAT GREAT SHOW!!

  2. Whoa. Omg! Love this show.. Hated the season finale… Left me hanging wanting more.. Followers still out there and Ryan leaves door unlocked with knifebsitting on table.. Duh!

  3. This last episode left me in shock now I guess we wait till fall??Like damn was excited thought it was over..

  4. Def have a love/hate relationship with this show. Spent the whole season annoyed that literally anyone could be one of Joe’s groupies but still kept tuning in each week. I agree that Joe probably fell through some trap door. I remembered that Ryan’s “ex” was supposed to kill him so no surprises there when she shows up. I’m not sure about season 2 though. How is the show going to last if year after year it’s the same story? For a while I had thought that each season would be a different story and set of characters, like how American Horror Story is… I guess we’ll see. Overall, not very impressed and pretty annoyed that the cliff hangers are good enough to keep me watching each week. At least we have some pretty sexy men to watch for an hour; that’s the best part!

  5. Im waiting for season 2 ! I don’t think Joe Carroll is dead ! But if so I know he has a lot more followers or Emma is gonna continue his journey ! Also I KNEW it wasn’t gonna end happily I knew tha girl was gonna come back & kill Ryan ( which sucks ) ’cause in the flash back when she visited Joe in jail she made a deal w | him !!! SEASON TWOO. WAITINGGGG

    • yess love the ending lol either Joe Carols wife is paralized she got stabbed in the back ouch and Hardy beat that girl up because he cant be dead but lovely ending I do think Joes alive cuzz he cud have easily escaped from the back in the water who knows that’s why re ran to the shack he knew exactly where he was going he aint dumb he prolly knew the gasoline tanks were there in advance so this man planned the thing cant wait season 2

    • When does season 2 Come out !

  6. Very excited to see there is a season 2 but how can they top season 1??

    • trust me they will lol you’ll be seeing people come back from the dead

  7. Great show with an incredible finale. Can’t wait for season two.

  8. Left the door open, Ryan? Really? Come on! It still bothers me that all the main characters are gonna somehow come back to life. Will Debra suddenly wake up in the morgue, gasping for breath? She needs to have closure to her own cult story. And what about FBI agent “missing eye”? What happened to him? I guess we’ll have to watch next season…..

  9. Wondering where Season 2 will go – Emma is out there along with who knows how many additional followers – will Ryan survive? Joe needs to stay dead and Claire and Joey need to gain some normalcy in their lives. If Joe would survive I don’t see how the writers would be able to maintain the suspense although he never appeared to actually be screaming – just saw his face through the fire but heard screams – technical flaw? If Ryan does survive would he and Mike just be chasing copycats? Would Ryan be considered a full-fledged FBI agent or still just reinstated? I loved Season 1 – it had me glued to my seat each week but Season 2, I can’t fathom where the story line would go – come on Hollywood keep me interested ….

    • I was kinda hoping she got knocked up by Joe, that would be a hell of a plot twist.

  10. Yes im excited to watch another Season but sad and upset they killed Jacob Wells character off!! That truly upset me!! Would definitely watch if they could somehow bring him back!!!

  11. Yes im excited to watch another Season but sad and upset they killed Jacob Wells character. Would definitely watch if they could somehow. bring him back!!!

  12. First episode gave me nightmares and I swore I would not watch it again but then I could not wait to see what would happen next. I am not a TV watcher but this show hooked me. I can’t wait for Season 2.

  13. I love the show. It takes my breathe away. I cant wait to see what happens. You never never what will happen. Great story and love the characters.

  14. I just watched the final episode, I know Ryan can not be dead.. What a heart stopping thriller!! On a few episodes I had to turn it and tape it for a few min. Kevin Bacon has always been one of my favs! Congrats to all for a great hit!!

  15. I’m glad the show is going on for another season. I love this show and I’m so hoping to see Emma’s character get what’s coming to her.

  16. Awesome cant wait till season 2 I think Emma will play a big roll next season and start her own gang of killers

  17. When will second season start ????

  18. Great show but honestly thats the dumbest FBI ever. I called everything in that season besides the final epsiode. Seriously how can you leave the door unlocked. And who opens a plastic nag with a knife? Plus how do you keep a season going when you kill off all the characters? Idk but hopefully they get more creative and have me guessing more rather than calling out evrything like all the bad guys getting away when the FBI is everywhere. Like the military base seen. And how does the cult have trackers on kevin bacons car but the FBI dont. If you say its only one season stick with it.

    • your making laugh enough said hahaha you shud be wrting the last chapter Hardy biting the plastic bag just like anyone else than his killer biting him

  19. Who says he left the door unlocked…we already know she has a key to his apartment…she just let herself in and waited for him for the right moment…

  20. when is season 2 starting I loooovvvee this show

  21. This show has alot of drama, and it is great to have drama, that keeps your eye’s on the program, great work guys, and looking forward to next season, Filthyband.

  22. This show has alot of drama, and it is great to have drama, that keeps your eye’s on the program, great work guys, and looking forward to next season,FilthyRichBand .

    • It really doesn’t have any drama or suspense, because they made it so unrealistic that every time you thought they were about solve something, a Joe follower magically appears and spoils it. Very amateurish writing. So much lost potential.

  23. How dare you even hurt a hair on Ryans head. Don’t do it again……

  24. well i know ryan wont die because they cant have a second season without him! im not too sure about claire though. but damn i cant wait to see what will happen next!

  25. Im excited for season two. Just Watched the finally of season one left Me speachless.

  26. Great show! I can’t believe that Ryan is going to get killed off. Can’t wait for Season 2!

    • claire and Ryan I know will live, but Claire will be in Major Rehabilitation. Emma is going to get REVENGE, we all know that, she despises Claire with such jealousy and will probably work in Claires Rehabilatation facility under her new look. Can’t wait for season 2.

  27. I have watched every episode. I am in love with this show, and have become a follower….. O.o love it.

  28. Love this show, the best tv series in a long time. Kevin Bacon is fantastic–such a good actor. I can’t wait for season 2 to start. I look forward to Monday’s and make sure I clear my evening so I can watch.
