Season 3 of The Flash has largely been focused on Barry’s altering of history in the event known as Flashpoint, where he saved his mother from being killed by Reverse-Flash many years ago. Once Barry tried to bring the timeline back to the way it should be, he fixed some things but also created brand new problems. This rift in history has brought a new villain to Central City for Flash to face off with in the form of Savitar, the first speedster.
While this outcome has largely been a result of Barry’s own decision, it was his continued battle with Zoom that pushed him to make it. Last viewers saw of Zoom, he was being transformed into Black Flash by the Time Wraiths and has since not been a factor in the story on The Flash. That may be changing however according to the actor behind Zoom himself.
Teddy Sears, the actor who played Hunter Zolomon (aka The Flash, aka Zoom, aka Black Flash), spoke with TV Guide about the possibility that he could return to The Flash in the future. There is nothing set in stone as of this moment, but he confirmed that there have been talks about him coming back at some point:
Zoom has been transformed into Black Flash, who has quite a place in the mythology of The Flash. He’s like the grim reaper for speedsters. Andrew Kreisberg, the head writer and EP, has talked about their interest in having a Black Flash return at some point in the series.
Now that the interest from both sides to make a return work is public, it should be interesting to see if anything ever happens. While both Sears and those behind The Flash TV show want a reunion, it appears that things are not entirely up to them. Sears is currently a cast member on 24: Legacy, which can make the scheduling for such an occasion difficult. As the actor told TV Guide:
It would be a lot of fun to drop back into that world. We’ll just have to see if the guys on the other end feel the same way. It sounds like they do, but it’s funny – now I belong to Fox, so there’s lots of people that would have to give a thumbs up. But I really hope so.
The possibility of Black Flash returning at some point is an intriguing premise for the show to try and tackle as he primarily appears right around the time of death for a speedster, in the world of DC Comics. The Flash currently has four speedsters on the show: Barry (Grant Gustin), Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), Jesse Quick (Violette Beane), and Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp). Savitar has prophesied that somebody on Team Flash will be dying – something that my have already been shown in the 2016 midseason finale – but he very well could be referencing one of Barry’s fellow speedsters.
Even if Sears does not return during The Flash season 3, it is likely that the TV show will eventually deal with the death of a speedster, be it one of the current ones or one who has yet to be appear. Should that happen, bringing Sears back as Black Flash would not only make sense, but seemingly be necessary.
The Flash returns in January 2017 on The CW.
