The wait is almost over. After nearly five months of anticipation, The Flash will return for season 3 on The CW. After season 2 ended with Barry Allen traveling back in time and preventing Reverse-Flash from carrying out the murder of his mother, the summer has been spent by many examining one tease after another, all with the intent of figuring out how The Flash will carry out its boldest endeavor yet — a ‘Flashpoint’ adaptation.
When The Flash returns, things will be drastically different than fans remember. Nora and Henry Allen, Barry’s parents, will be alive despite being killed by Reverse-Flash and Zoom, respectively. Barry’s friends will be in different situations as well. His longest friend and love interest, Iris, will be no more than a stranger (at first), and Cisco will hold the cushy title of “Richest Man in Central City.” And that’s not all. Barry will no longer be The Flash — that title will belong to Wally West, who takes exception to being called Kid Flash.
Some things, however, never change. One man that Barry will still be at odds with is Reverse-Flash. Several images, clips, and trailers have shown Matt Letscher’s Eobard Thawne locked away by Barry. The clips seen thus far show Thawne taunting Allen with the knowledge that he created the ‘Flashpoint’ timeline, and that he will soon lose his memories from his former life. Now, The CW has given fans their best look at Reverse-Flash yet, in a newly released extended clip (above).
While the new clip doesn’t offer too much information that wasn’t already known, it still managed to clarify a few things. It looks like Barry is using some sort of special containment (presumably similar to the one in S.T.A.R. Labs) to dampen Thawne’s speed, preventing escape. The clip also likely takes place early in the ‘Flashpoint’ arc, as it is the exchange where the timeline gets its name. But more importantly, it is at a time when Barry is still more than content with his new life. Barry exclaims with a smile, “I have everything back, that you took from me,” hinting that he has no interest in restoring the timeline.
However, Reverse-Flash is set off when Barry says that he is “home.” Thawne tells Barry “This isn’t your home Barry. This is a mirage, that will end us both…” Still, it looks like Barry won’t realize the ramifications of the timeline he created until, maybe, their common enemy “time” comes after them. It may be revealed as soon as tomorrow why Barry will be begging him to kill his mother all over again — and, whether Thawne will eat that food Barry has brought him.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4 at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13.
