While it has been busy exploring the multiverse and introducing new metahumans, at its heart The Flash is all about family. The nucleus of the show is the West family, which Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is an adopted member of, and episodes are often grounded in their familial connections. Barry’s quest for justice is shaped by family, specifically the murder of his mother, and his father’s wrongful imprisonment because of it. New family members have begun popping up in Central City as Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) came to town to get to know his father and sister, in the wake of his mother’s terminal illness.
As the show continues we’re able to get a closer look at some of the other family members that influence our heroes, as we did with the Ramon family in Season 1’s ‘Rouge Time‘. There we met Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) piano prodigy older brother Dante (Nicholas Gonzalez), and get a small taste of what his upbringing was like. New leaked set photos from The Flash indicate that we might be seeing another Ramon brother with some powers of his own very soon.
The images below (via Twitter) show a new character, clearly decked out as a metahuman with a mask and scythe. His costume most strongly resembles the DC villain Rupture, a bad guy who made his first comic book appearance in Justice League of America #233. He also just so happens to be the alter ego of Armando Ramon, Cisco’s other brother.
Assuming that this is the correct interpretation of this image there are a few immediate explanations for how he will fit into the show. First it’s possible that the character of Armando will simply be merged with Dante. Cisco has mentioned Dante a few times over the course of the series, but has never alluded to any more relatives. Like Cisco, Dante’s abilities may have taken longer to manifest, and Rupture is his new Earth 1 alter ego. However, since the show is mid Earth 2 explorations it is equally possible that Rupture is the villainous alter-ego of Dante on the other world, which the team encounters when they go back to stop Zoom. Finally, he could actually be third Ramon brother and an entirely new character on earth one, who simply has not received that much attention yet.
Regardless of how they are introduced, having the Ramon family again take center stage is a good thing for the show. Cisco is one of the breakout characters and giving him more backstory and family drama just adds layers to an already excellent performance by Valdes. It’s far too early to say if Rupture will be more then the villain of the week bad guy, but if he is indeed connected to Cisco his actions will have a far bigger impact than the average bad guy on The Flash.
