the flash movie What Will The Flash Movie Be About?

With all the DC movie updates we got last week, the news that writer/producer Greg Berlanti might direct The Flash movie kind of got swept up in the current. However, when that news did drop, we got an interesting reaction from many of our Screen Rant readers: a number of them didn’t feel like The Flash movie had anything to offer.

After reading so many comments claiming that The Flash is a lame character, I just had to write a response. In my opinion, the sentiment that The Flash movie will have little depth or complexity to it couldn’t be more wrong. So let’s discuss: what will The Flash be about?

WHICH FLASH ARE WE TALKING?

First of all, we need to establish which Flash we’re talking about.  The Flash has had more incarnations and copy-cat versions (some with multiple incarnations of the their own) than just about any other character in comic book history. We previously discussed which Flash is best for the movie; check out that discussion and weigh in if you’d like.

On the current Flash Family tree there is:

  • Jay Garrick (Golden Age Flash)
  • Barry Allen (Silver Age Flash)
  • Wally West (Kid Flash/Modern Age Flash)
  • Bart Allen (Impulse/Kid Flash #2)
  • Max Mercury (Quicksilver)
  • Johnny Chambers (Johnny Quick)
  • Jesse Chambers (Jesse Quick)

If you’re not familiar with The Flash comic book, time travel is a big part of the character’s mythology (his speed powers help him transcend both space and time), so there are actually even more variations of the character. The names I listed are what I would call the “primary speedsters” of the DC Universe; technically speaking, any one of the characters who have carried the Flash mantle (Garrick, Allen, West) are viable candidates for the forthcoming movie.

Comic book writer Geoff Johns has been in charge of The Flash comic book since 2000, and was also responsible for writing up a treatment for the movie, which he turned in to DC/Warner Bros. sometime in the Spring/Summer of ’09. When I asked Johns about his Flash treatment at Comic Con last year, this was his response:

“We’re caught up in a world that’s obsessed with speed these days. Texting, faster downloading… We’re always looking for ways to speed things up, it can be hard to slow ourselves down.”

Other comments made during that panel led me to believe that Johns’ treatment for the film had Silver Age Flash (and fan-favorite) Barry Allen at its center – which would make sense, since it was Johns’ reverence for Barry Allen that led him to resurrect the character more than two decades after his comic book demise (a record death length for a comic book hero, BTW).

THE NEW MYTHOLOGY

Since resurrecting Barry Allen, Geoff Johns has done a major overhaul to the mythology of of The Flash – much the same way he did when he took over writing duties on Green Lantern. With both books, Johns managed to sweep away the increasingly absurd/cynical storylines that came with the 90s era, while still preserving the core values that have made Hal Jordan and Barry Allen enduring icons. Johns also took the prudent step of revising (not erasing) those campy sci-fi origin stories of the 40s/50s era, giving them more logical and weighted narrative dimensions.

the flash origin What Will The Flash Movie Be About?

In the case of The Flash, Barry Allen was originally portrayed as a forensic scientist working with the Central City police. One night while preparing to leave work, a mysterious bolt of lighting strikes a case of chemicals Allen is working with, spilling them on him and imbuing him with the ability to run at super speed.

That must’ve been a great origin story back in the day, but it’s a pretty thin premise for today’s savvy comic  book audiences. Johns has updated Allen’s origin, adding a brilliant backstory where Barry’s mother was murdered when he was young and his father was arrested as the prime suspect. It was the need to prove “what really happened” regarding his mother’s death that drove Barry into forensic science in the first place. In Johns’ revision, Barry is essentially a cop trying outrun the one injustice that forever plagues – and just like that, we have a strong foundation for a complex and interesting super hero protagonist.

The Flash caught up in The Speed Force

Over the years it’s been revealed in the pages of Flash comics that there is a (sentient?) ‘Speed Force’ at work in the universe, which occasionally empowers individuals with the ability to move so fast that they can literally breach the limits of time and space. In the Geoff Johns era, Barry Allen has been brought into the epicenter of this Speed Force mystery and it has (for better or worse) become a central theme of his story. However, that same Speed Force storyline comes with the burden of a lot of time travel logistics.

For example: that fateful lighting bolt that struck Barry Allen and gave him his powers? Well, without going too far into The Flash’s history with time-travel (no pun), let’s just say it has been proposed that the lighting bolt was Barry Allen himself, using the Speed Force to set his own destiny in motion. See what I mean about the burden of time-travel? It’s a tricky device to shape a cinematic origin story around…

  1. Flash is fit for Justice league movies or supporting character in another hero's movie, that's it. No full length live action movie should be made.

However the article written does bring up strong reasons to have an animated movie released. DC needs to give the average movie-going audience a wider breadth of characters to enjoy on the big screen.

  2. Why? Have you ever read/watched Flash in a solo series? Read 'Born to Run', 'Blitz' and 'Ignition'. He's a great character if done right. Besides if freakin ANT-MAN is getting his own movie(check it out) the Flash sure as hell deserves one.

  3. “No full length live action movie should be made. “

Meh While I disagree with GK I also disagree with you. And if you “bring” the animated movie that only paves the way for a live action version.

So he is prime for a live action he just needs a leg up first.

  4. ok i have to set some things right first. 1. johnny chambers is the crime syndicate(alt-earth/evil) version of wally west(since james chambers doesn't exist in that reality. james chambers is james quick with his daughter jesse who discovered a mathematical formula for accessing the speed force. 2. gorilla grodd isn't from gorilla world he's from gorilla city, a hidden place somewhere in the continent of africa where gorillas, instead of evolving into man, gained heightened intelligence and various mental powers. theres a whole storyline where he makes a machine to bring everyone on the planet under his mind control but thats for another time. 3. eobard thawne was the FIRST reverse flash, not the second. he was a true speedster. huunter zolomon was the second and his title was professor zoom. he wasn't a speedster, his back was broke by gorilla grodd and wally wouldnt go back and fix it because he didnt want to mess with history(unlike his counterpart barry) so hunter used the cosmic treadmill(that was the only way a flash can timetravel, it was built by people from eobards time and he stole it to go back and fight with barry) and it exploded giving him the ability to manipulate time, not speed. there's so much they could do with a flash movie, or series of movies. hae the first movie be about barry and a few of the rogues, introduce iris. movie 2 would introduce a young wally west, iris's nephew and have the villain be thawne. movie 3 we would see wally have his accident and have barry teach him to use the powers, this would be where they couold make a crisis movie and have it come out relatively close to the release of the third movie and have a point where the movie jumps ahead a year and you see wally has accepted the mantle of the flash after barry's demise. sorry for the rant but i'm a fan, if you couldn't tell.

  5. Im all for a Flash film. Outta all the Flashes to choose from, my choices would be between Barry Allen or Wally West. Not sure who would be perfect for the role of Barry Allen's Flash but as Wally West my first choice would be Ryan Reynolds even though he's known to be Deadpool & Green Lantern. Im just sayin he'd be perfect for the role if they went with Wally. As for villain in the film is a tough call for couple of his villains have cheesy names, dont all heroes villains do? I know i would like to see the Reverse Flash/Prof. Zoom as a villain especially if they went with Wally West version and cast someone as his love interest as Linda Park. One thing i like about Wally West's Flash is his changing into his costume when it flies outta a ring he would wear. I dont why some people wouldnt be thrilled about wanting a Flash film. To me it would be nice to see more other super hero films come out besides Batman or Superman. I cant wait for Green Lantern and hoping solo films of Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Hawkman & other get their shot on the silver screen and hopfully all that could add up to a Justice League film. I would like to add it would be nice to see Superman have a cameo in the Flash movie add see the two have one of their famous races, lol.

  7. What? No love for the original Barry Allen villain, The Turtle?

    Nah, me neither . . . !

I like the idea — supported by a few others here — of a Barry-Flash funfest. I would deal with the origin sequence in the middle of the film. For the beginning, I would start mid-action of early-career Flash fighting for his life against an already grisled Capt. Cold. Then, after barely escaping with his life, Barry battles sevral other Rogues (Weather Wizard, Capt. Boomerang, Mirror Master and Sarah Palin* would be my picks), in farily rapid order. No origins for them, but a burgeoning realization on their part that they've been pushed back in time by an unknown force to test or best the nascent Flash. Experience vs. youth; cunning vs. incomplete knowledge of his own powers.

Finally, as the Rogues piece together what's happened and assemble to finish Flash, Prof. Zoom comes into the picture, clobbering them in an effort to take the Flash's life himself. As Flash and Reverse Flash fight to the end, Barry picks up on the best uses of the speed power he has at his disposal — learning from his mortal enemy! Still, he is losing the battle, until the Rogues re-enter the picture, helping Barry survive and leaving Zoom alive only to enable their retreat back to the future. (I think this would cement the special relationship between the Rogues and the Flash, plus leave open reappearance by audience faves or other Rogues, this time with origins.)

Film 2: Grodd, Gorilla City, and the realization that there was a Jay Garrick.

*Oh, not that kind of Rogue — sorry!

  9. Excellent post, Kofi!!! A Barry Flash film is the way to go. can't wait to see what geoff does with it. Thanks, man. You had some great ideas! :D

  10. Watching Justice League one Saturday morning …….. where Flash got jumped by Lex Luthor who stole his powers! Imagine Flashs' powers in the hands of Lex Luther – Can I just say ………. I always knew that Flash was an awesome Superhero, but when Lex used his powers for evil ……… Holy …… he became Flashtabulous!!!!! So I'm all for a Flash movie! I think it'll work ……… I just think we haven't seen all the best the character has to offer …….yet!

  11. In this “FLASH” Movie “The Fastest Man Alive” shall appear on the big screen. I do follow the origins on THE FLASH and I think Barry Allen is the chosen one to be the hero going to race against time. RACE AGAINST TIME takes Barry Allen back in the era where he meets the other FLASHES are Jay Garrick, Bart Allen, and Wally West and todays modern-version is Wallace “Wally” West his nephew taken over the Present time in the DC Universe. Wally is a cocky kid who can do things like his Uncle can. But his uncle's turn to demonstrate his speed to get back to the DC Universe. Wally West lives in Keystone City, Kansas and thats the DC Universe Role-Playing Game in the 90's and the Millenium era.

I think it's time for Barry Allen and his Pre-Crisis Origin to start an Adventure in Central City, Missouri. I hope Greg Berlanti will make any decisions where to film Cental City somewhere like (Atlanta, GA; Denver, OH; Arkansas City, AK; Phoenix, AZ, and St Louis, MO). I think Springfield or St. Louis will be a great spot in the Missouri locations for the” FLASH” movie to be filmed it says here in the Geography of DC Comics

  12. In all honesty, I think if you want to skip over the Rogues and go straight to Professor Zoom, you really don't under The Flash. The Rogues are a phenominal group of villains. The Flash doesn't have just one signature villain because he needs more than just one. They stand out of the crowd. During the Infinite Crisis the Society wanted to induct The Rogues as a group to counteract The Flash because they're the only ones who know The Flash. Their individual stories are unique. They are unique in that they support each other, they have their own morals and values. It's stated in the comics, “They're organized. They may have goofy names and wear bright colors, but that doesn't mean they're idiots.”

And as far as who The Flash should be, I'm voting for Wally. He's been the definitive Flash for the last 23 years. He's got a great legacy to carry on. Bringing Barry back was a mistake I think.

  14. its so very great and nice site i really love it.

  15. I think Jensen ackles ,from supernatural, is a natural to play the lead character in the flash movie. He is funny very leading guy looks and let's face it, does look the Barry Allen. My second choice is ryan mcpartlin from Chuck he also looks good for the part either one should be good for it

  16. MAKE THE MOVIEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. MAKE IT!!!!!!

    • They need to make this movie!!! The Flash is so awesome, i would love it if other people could see that too. As for who the flash should be in the movie, it’s obvious. I’m a Wally West girl myself, but if your gonna do a flash movie it has to start with Barry Allen (Jay is to far back to start the franchise now and Wally’s character is formed by Barry Allen). But don’t get me wrong they would have to move on to Wally in a couple movies, because despite what Geof Johns says I believe Wally is the best flash. And that’s why the flash franchise is such a friggen gold mine for a movie. The flash has a story line. There is sequence of events that is significant to the characters which is something that is fairly unique. Batman and Superman both have villians that you can place them against but there’s no real cannon storyline that would work well as a set of movies. The flash is a legacy story, its all about how these characters evolved and how the ideals were passed on. Personally barry has an awesome story for the movies – he gets superpowers, is engaged to this awesome woman, fights evil – evil then apparently kills said women. This is cannon – batman had a similar plot that it made up! If the comics have this much as is then there can definitely be a movie. On a side note though, no offense to this writer, but if they do give Barry Allen Geofs stupid rebooted past, I would scream. The flash is brilliant enough without some batman knock off. People can have depth and want to help others without a horrible past. Barry allen was meant to have parents and a good life, its part of his character and to change that would be offending.

  18. I truly appreciate you taking the time to post this. I really liked reading it and am looking forward to more posts from you! Keep ‘em coming.

  19. I have just finish reading Flash Rebirth and I am now really excited about a Flash movie! I think Barry’s story would be particularly good for a live action movie. (Spoiler alert!!!) Always trying to prove his fathers innocence. And Dr. Zoom as a time travelling stalker altering Barrys life for his own person experiments!
I think the opening scene should be the scene from Rebirth where Barry is a kid racing another and loosing unitl he see’s the police car out side his house. (Spoiler’s over)
I really hope they do a good job.

  20. I’m a big fan of The Flash. I don’t think a Flash movie is a bad idea as long as the dialog/script is great. Lots of movies today might be action packed but has a horrible script! In my opinion Wally West should be used as the Flash for a movie or at least the main Flash if more than one is to be in it cuz Wally is the funniest and seems to be the best overall. Again thats just my opinion. If anyone has an issue with a Flash movie then maybe they should make a Justice League movie first and have the Flash in that just see how the audience likes him. If the writers make it good they can then give him his own movie.

  21. Gotta go with Barry Allen. Jay might make for a good movie, but they’re doing something too similar to that with Captain America.

I think you could make a great movie around either Gorilla Grodd or Professor Zoom. Grodd would be a great choice if you wanted to make the movie altogether stranger and less formulaic. Something like a movie adaptation of a comic book with some Nietzsche thrown in? It would be weird, but in a good way.

Zoom would be an obvious choice if you were going for something more predictable. I think a logical starting point would be Zoom’s attempted murder of Barry’s fiancee, and a logical ending point would either be Barry’s killing Zoom or else the “trial” that follows this killing.

If it was up to me, I’d give a movie version of Barry all of the near-omnipotence of the comic books. I think they began exploring this concept of godhood in Watchmen, Superman Returns, and the Incredible Hulk, but I also think there’s still a lot of room to flesh out this concept.

    There’s my two cents anyway.

  22. The Flash is one of the most intresting superheros out there and would most definetly make a great movie. He is not ‘lame’ much better then a lot of people that pass as heroes in the comic world. For the character, it should be Wally West, becuase he is the most modern flash, is more likable and the best out of all the flashes becuase he is the most powerful and can run faster. In my opinion, he is the best. A movie on him would sure be exciting, amazing and completely watchworthy. I know for sure I would line up to see it.

  23. Well if it sounds too dull, why not add a guest superhero like superman towards the end of the movie to leave a suspense for a future possible Justice League.

  24. Don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread, but I’ve just found it and have wanted a place to vent.

Problems for a Flash movie: Special effects. Speed effects in Smallville, No Ordinary Family, or the Flash TV show aren’t up to big screen snuff. Try as I might, I can’t figure out a good effect. Furthermore, Flash is too powerful; logically, no one could beat him, so limitations would have to be built in.

Nonetheless, if I were writing the movie, the villain would be Abracadabra (think about the charisma of a young Allen Rickman). He is the perfect bad guy because the world thinks he uses magic, but really he uses future science. Central City is going to be the future Hollywood… Abra, a failed performer in the future, comes back in time to find stardom only to find out that today’s CC is just a large mid-western town (think Chicago). Discovering his abilities give him power, and a chance meeting with the not-yet-powered Barry Allen (which terrifies him, to Allen’s surprise), he embarks on a crime spree building to horrific proportions.

Allen, the CSI whiz kid, and Iris West, the brilliant profiler, tackle the case. His findings allow Allen to begin to reverse engineer future science while Iris builds a picture of our bad guy. Some form of future quicksilver infects Allen and a lightening bolt supercharges our hero. Then, for the first time in film history, the problems of super speed are portrayed (for example, hair would flay a person’s head to ribbons; speed hair would be worse than hat hair, shoes dissolve, any object in the air would be deadly, getting to speed would take awhile, inability to hear after mach 1, “hang time” would be interminable; hit someone at speed and they die, turning would be a challenge); aura or no, getting the hang of speed would take some intelligent effort. Therefore, taking on Abracadabra would be trial and error while Abra taunts him about his destiny.

Humor would be part of the realism rather than a comedic take.

    Just my thoughts.

    • dude, thats genius. And people are worried that theres not enough depth in the character for a flash movie… Whatever. If the writers become truly dry of ideas, do what they did in Spiderman 3. Put in THREE villains. I mean it’s not like Barry doesen’t have a colorful enough gallery.

    • he could even accidentally destroy a portion of the town and lose confidence in himself until abra pushes him too far and barry allen has to take action…

    • Flash can pull this off and in my opinion he is a better superhero than superman

  25. I would love to see a good Flash movie even if it’s one of the DC Animated films.

  26. Gotta be Barry Allen, the character that everyone remembers and sets the standarsd by. And the costume needs to look like the Silver Age comics from the 60s and 70s. The comics are a pretty good guide to go by–that’s what elevated the hero to fame in the first place. And–we need one or two Flash movies, and then a team-up between Barry Allen/Flash and Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. They were buddies in the comics, and had great chemistry when they would team up! In fact, I’ll go farther: we also need a team-up movie between Dr. Fate (Kent Nelson) and Hourman (Rex Tyler), just as they were, costumes, personalities, and all, in the Silver Age comics. Great heroes, great chemistry, buddies and teammates in the JSA. And keep the costumes the same: fantastic costumes, essential!!

  27. I would love for them to make a Flash movie, but personally I would want the Flash to be West just because I love him so much. Also if they picked West to Flash, I feel more kids would see it becuase he is Kid Flash.

  28. There’s a possibility to create a plot named “The FLASH: The mystery of the ring” as barry died in the crisis of the earth, he left the ring somehow that was found by someone new….. maybe this can be a little spark to a big idea for the DC artists…….

  29. I aggree, Flash movie would be awesome, but being the single hero or one villain in a movie wouldnt be enough. It HAS to have a justice league pattern to it somehow. Barry would be the best choice IMO. I see it like they did to the avengers. We see the pattern that leads to the avengers in the thor/ capt. america etc. movie, and it would need to be the same thing, even give more. Iv been wanted a flash movie for a while, i think hes awesome. Even if it would have a comedic kick to the movie, i dont think the flash should be as ”insane” as he is in the tv series which included him. Got to be at least a little serious. In any case, i look forward to see the flash on the big screen, followed by the justice league. Now, you might say that green lantern, superman or batman doesnt have anything to show that justice league may come to fruition, and i agree. But nevertheless, before the flash even comes to the big screen, they have time to make a storyline to the justice league that can be integrated in the next superman movie and green lantern. I have no clue about batman though, as the dark knight rises will be the last movie of batman.
