It’s been a rough year for women on television. From The 100 to Sleepy Hollow and The Walking Dead, female characters have been getting killed off from genre shows in noticeable amounts, and Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) on Arrow was just the latest in an ongoing trend. In the comics, the Black Canary is a member of the Justice League and a paramour of the Green Arrow, yet on the series she was often in the background and mostly lacking a story arc until her untimely death.
Many Arrow fans are not happy that Laurel won’t get to fulfill her character’s destiny. And the manner in which she left with what seemed like an ill-planned death and last words for the love of her life to find happiness may have a bitter pill for some to swallow. Yet with a show like Arrow, that scene probably won’t be the last we see of Laurel, and certainly won’t be the last we see of her in the DC multiverse.
In fact, this week’s The Flash, titled ‘Invincible,’ already features Cassidy back in the saddle as Laurel, but playing a villain rather than a hero. As Black Siren, a member of Zoom’s meta-human army, she’ll lead his assault on Central City with her Canary Cry. Earth-2 Laurel also knows her doppelganger is dead and that she was the Black Canary. Some new pictures from EW tease the Black Siren’s arrival. Plus, there seems to be a flashback to her time with our dearly departed Killer Frost and Reverb:
Needless to say, her presence in Central City will be a shock to Cisco, Caitlin, and Barry, who are still recovering from learning about Earth-1 Laurel’s death in Star City. Cisco in particular takes it very hard, since he did have a crush on the Black Canary. Carlos Valdes tells EW:
“Cisco reacts in a pretty unexpected way. There’s a little bit of a morbid shock, because the characters have an awareness to the fact that Laurel Lance is dead. That death had some effect on these characters in this world. So to see Black Siren, more than anything, is a shock to the senses. To know that someone relatively close to you is dead and to see a version of them still alive would be harrowing and jarring for anyone. There’s a bit of a disturbance there in terms of seeing her like that again.”
It’ll be heartbreaking for characters and fans alike to see Laurel as a villain, and that may just be part of Zoom’s plan. It’ll be difficult for anyone to kill Black Siren, and the gang will probably first try to reason with her before realizing she can’t be won over. We’ll have to wait and see whether the character survives this episode and next week’s finale. Maybe Cassidy will get to stay in the DC TV universe after all.
