The Expendables train has been chugging full steam ahead ever since it was first announced. We’ve had plenty of casting news which has left us with a group (a group that, perhaps, may still grow) of some kick-ass icons of action movies past and present.
In addition to Sylvester Stallone (who’s also writing and directing the film), we have Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Randy Couture, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Arnold Schwarzenegger (if only in a cameo appearance) Eric Roberts and Danny Trejo. While adding some Oscar-winning power and beauty to the film is Forest Whitaker and Charisma Carpenter, respectively.
Now with all this news coming out about the film, one thing which you would understandably want to know is just when is it coming out? Well the wait is finally over.
The Expendables has a release date of April 23rd 2010.
Any movie even remotely similar to what The Expendables is (that is an all-out, kick-ass macho action-fest…. hopefully, anyway), doesn’t want to be released anywhere near that date. The only competition currently scheduled is the remake of Death at a Funeral with Chris Rock, but somehow I don’t think they have the same intended audiences.
Anyone who’s ever felt their blood pumping while watching Stallone training for the boxing ring, cheered as Jet Li kicks the asses of an everlasting array of bad guys, been hooked as Jason Statham stylishly fights a dozen guys at once while wearing a suit (on and on…), should be just drooling in anticipation of this thing right now.
Although the date they’ve set is about 3 months too late for my liking, it’s still great to see them choose a definitive date. If, for whatever reason, the date gets changed at any point, I hope it will be moved ahead and not pushed back.
So are you part of the intended audience for The Expendables? Is there anyone out there who’s going to be able to resist seeing this cast come together and kick ass?
The Expendables is set to start shooting this July and, as stated above, has a current release date of April 23rd 2010.

This should be a big summer release! My guessing is that this is not a set release date and it will be pushed to a summer one. This deserves to be a summer movie!
Wait, remake of Death At A Funeral, is that the same DAAF Brit film? You gotta be kidding me! Evan that is being remade, and with Chris Rock, dear lord!

Yup, Death at a Funeral is, indeed, a remake of that Brit comedy flick. I know – at least let a few years pass before you remake something, Hollywood!:P

This is one of my most anticipated films for next year!! I wonder if it’s going to surpass the kill ratio in Rambo??

Since the start for summer films has been the first weekend in May in recent years,
I dont think this date is so bad .

The next Fast and the Furious sequel comes out on on April 3rd!
So, April is slowly becoming a Power Movie month.
I’m glad it’s coming out in April and NOT January like Rambo did. The movie wouldn’t survive, even with this cast and concept!

I am very sad that Whitaker had to be recast. I can only hope that his replacement is just a rumor.

However, I can see why Stallone put Fiddy in here. When it is time to plug this film, he can market it to venues that it normally would not be. And, Fiddy does have some knowledge in how to put his name out. His website & myspace are pretty good in doing that.
I’m sure Stallone knows what he is doing.
After seeing Ip Man I would rather see Donnie Yen in place of Jet Li, lol. Nothing against Jet Li, but watch Ip Man and you’ll understand. And to see a completely different side of Yen, watch Mismatched Couples, pretty hilarious stuff, lol.
Yes! Or even Flashpoint! I agree that Donnie Yen is better than Li, and he can speak better English too!

Ah, I knew someone was going to bring that up. I didn’t like Flashpoint, but it had nothing to do with Donnie Yen. He was alright, the movie was just dumb in my opinion. WAAAY to overdramatic, and the ending was just so cheesey, they tried WAY too hard for some really dramatic tragic ending. It was so corny, lol. And not enough fighting!
The fighting was good though, but there really was very few of them…
I agree, there was not that much fighting in that film, which is weird considering it has Donnie Yen.

Oh, but I agree with you on the accent thing, Donnie Yen is a Hong Kong star, so he’s pretty westernized compared to a lot of other Asian stars. Jet Li was a product of communist China.
I just thought, instead of 50, Sly why not cast in Michael Jai White!?!
You got a great actor who keeps himself in good shape and if most do not know him from Undisputed 2, then they do know him from TDK!

You know, what about an Asian star in an action movie that does NOT do martial arts? I mean, is that really how Americans see Asians? Either they know martial arts or they are nothing? One can’t grow up, join the military, be a real bad ass with firearms like Rambo??
Well Chow doesn’t know any martial arts, if he fakes it well.
Andy Lau and Tony Leung are brilliant actors in my view. I’d hate to see them try out Hollywood because I can’t see them being taken seriously as proper actors.
Like you say, they’d probably end up being cast as kung fu masters or something.
