Deadpool‘s Brianna Hildebrand will join season 2 of FOX’s The Exorcist. While William Friedkin’s 1973 religious horror masterpiece The Exorcist continues to endure as a classic over 40 years after its theatrical release, the Exorcist franchise as a whole has mostly failed to live up to the lofty standards of the original. 1977’s Exorcist II: The Heretic is generally considered one of the worst horror sequels of all-time. 1990’s Exorcist III has a cult following, but still remains obscure to most. The fourth film — a prequel — had such a troubled production that two different movies ultimately resulted from it, neither of which were very good.

With that in mind, when it was announced that FOX was bringing The Exorcist franchise to TV, many fans didn’t have high hopes. After all, why would a TV show succeed where the sequels had failed? Surprisingly enough though, season 1 of The Exorcist ended up earning rave reviews from both critics and the genre community. While nobody is claiming that it’s in league with Friedkin’s original, FOX’s The Exorcist definitely showed that there was still some life left in the property.

The Exorcist’s ratings were so consistently low that many assumed the series would be a goner, especially considering FOX’s long history of canceling underperforming genre shows after a single season. Thankfully, The Exorcist earned a reprieve, getting picked up for season 2 in late spring, long after season 1 had ended. Just recently, Star Trek’s John Cho joined the regular cast of season 2, and now Deadline reports that Hildebrand will be a series regular for season 2.

The Exorcist Hulu The Exorcist Season 2 Adds Deadpool’s Brianna Hildebrand

With the harrowing tale of the Rance family now in the rear view mirror, The Exorcist season 2 sees heroic priests Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera), and Father Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) leave Chicago, and attempt to hunt down evil elsewhere. They end up at a group home run by Andrew Kim (Cho), a former child psychologist. One of the home’s residents is targeted by a malevolent supernatural force, leaving Ortega and Keane to fight the legions of darkness once again.

Hildebrand — best known for playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the aforementioned Deadpool — plays Verity, one of the foster kids in Kim’s home. She’ll soon turn 18 and be out on her own, but she still deeply cares for both Kim and her foster siblings. The Deadline report doesn’t specify whether she’s the person who gets targeted by the evil force, but her role is described as a leading one.

The Exorcist season 2 premieres September 29 on FOX.
