‘The Event’ May Move To Syfy For a Miniseries

Disappointed that the cliffhanger finale of The Event won’t ever be explored? Syfy may have some good news for you. Rumor has it that the NBC sister station may pick up the cancelled show for a miniseries.

Series creator Nick Wauters hinted as much after The Event was cancelled last month. The series had been struggling to maintain in the ratings race, losing more than half of its audience over its 22 episode run.

Syfy operates under NBC-Universal, so a move there would be much easier than to another cable network. The Event would likely play well with Syfy’s core audience (at least the ones who aren’t tuning in for wrestling) and the ratings the show earned on NBC would be more than enough to sustain it on cable.

The biggest problem that Syfy might face is budget. The Event was NBC’s answer to Lost, and the budget reflected that. Syfy (which shoots most of its original programming in Canada) may not have the cash to do the series justice.

That said, a miniseries of 6-10 episodes could wrap up the plot point introduced in the finale without breaking the bank. It would take some skillful writing and a break-neck pace, but it might be just enough to give what fans remain the sendoff they’re hoping for.

While a cable migration seems like a natural move for a series like The Event, it’s far from a sure thing, even with the networks’ common parentage. That’s a shame, because if talks between Universal Studios and Syfy don’t pan out, it’s extremely unlikely that the show will find a home anywhere else.

While the second half of The Event‘s first (and so far only) season was disappointing, the finale ends on a high note that’s easily the most interesting thing to to the story happen yet. It was an undeniably sci-fi moment, which was made even more shocking by the realization that it might never be explained.

If the planets align and Syfy gets the go-ahead to continue the series, expect a summer or fall 2012 relaunch of The Event.

  1. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen. Evidentally, quality storytelling wasn’t “the event.”

  2. I hope this DOES happen. I personally got into “The Event” and just like “FlashForward” it got canceled on me. I hope SyFy takes this because it will give me a reason to watch that channel (other than Marcel).

    • I’m with Sin.

While I thought the middle episodes really drug along, they much improved near the end and I was really enjoying it. So yes, I would really like it if they managed to put together something that allowed the Event to wrap things up.

I just wanna know how they are going to resolve the fact that gravitational proximity is going wreak havoc on both worlds!

      • That threw me for a loop too. Wouldn’t the planets either crash into each other or settle into new orbits, basically destroying the life equation on both? I guess this is where suspension of disbelief comes in.

      • I would assume that the advanced race would transport the planet away after the people migrate. If they don’t, both worlds are toast.

  3. Hee-hee…don’t commit “Sin”…cuz he’s right! The Event was the best thing on TV (and there is not much…I spend more time watching Netflix!) I did follow The Event faithfully, tho, and even changed my availability at work so I would always be able to watch it. The last few weeks, our family dropped Cable entirely and switched to Netflix/Roku streaming and by-mail viewing to save money (and we did, and it’s great! Everyone should sign up for Netflix for great viewing with great service!). However, I always watched The Event on the NBC website. I hope someone does pick up The Event, and put it on their website as NBC did. The series had alot of faults, but got better as time went on, and was about the closest thing to an “X-Files-in-training” I had found. If it comes out on DVD, I will definitely buy the set! So please SYFY (or someone): pick this series up, and put it on your website as NBC did!

  4. Loved the EVENT. Hope to see it on the SciFy channel.

  5. I loved that show. Yes it did drag on at some points, but if they told you everything up front what reason would you have to watch it? I had to suspend disbelief with there being another planet close enough to actually see it, but hey it’s TV. SYFY please pick up this show so we can have some completion.

  6. Hi I taped the Event and just sat down to watch, I caught 16 episodes to the end. Hope there is a new series. If you stick with it it is good. But like Flash Forward probably not get an ending. Also V the new series and Caprica. All the good Sci Fi is taken off and Reality TV in its place.
