The Dictator Trailer Sacha Baron Cohen The Dictator Trailer Reveals a Riches to Rags Story

Sacha Baron Cohen has grown into a solid actor (see: Hugo), but his greatest talent still lies in creating satirical caricatures like Ali G, Borat and Brüno. Cohen will be back in caricature for The Dictator, in which he plays “General Aladeen,” a ‘heroic dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy never comes to the country he so lovingly oppresses.’

Today we have the new trailer for The Dictator, which reveals a twist to the story: apparently, the film will be about more than just Cohen running around as a dictator who uses his wealth and power in selfish, megalomaniacal ways.

See what we mean by watching The Dictator trailer below:

This film is offering more than it initially seemed to with the whole “riches to rags” storyline. That’s actually a positive sign, in my opinion, as the dictatorial schtick that Cohen displayed in previous trailers (complete with celebrity appearances from the likes of Megan Fox) ran a serious danger of running thin.

Dictator director Larry Charles (Seinfeld) and Cohen had ridiculously thin storylines for both Brüno and Borat, which arguably weakened those otherwise funny films. This storyline for The Dictator isn’t exactly ground-breaking, but does seem to offer some sweet opportunities for both comedic setups and sly commentary.

BONUS: If you haven’t seen it yet, watch Cohen in character as the Dictator crashing the 2012 Oscars. He starred in the Oscar-winning Hugo, but was notified by the Academy that he would be banned from the ceremony if he came in character as The Dictator. Well, Cohen not only hit the red carpet in character – there was also a  hilarious incident with über-host, Ryan Seacrest.

The Dictator will be in theaters on May 11, 2012.

  1. Hang on, back up a second… you actually thought BRUNO was FUNNY????

    • Bruno was Alright. It’s def the worst of his films.

    • Yes it was.

  2. Not one laugh is no laughing matter.

  3. The trailer was funny and explained the movie is more like funny and serious in between.

  4. Huge Sacha Cohen fan since the Ali G days. He’s been great in everything aside from Bruno which I felt was trying to hard to raise the bar. I got the same feeling watching this trailer. Maybe it’s too early to tell but I don’t see myself going to watch this.

  5. looks better than some of his other films. refuse to see bruno and borat was kinda dumb imo

  6. I guess this film will be entirely scripted, rather than have Sacha Baron Cohen run around and trick people. I thought it would be a mixture from the earliest trailer. I’m actually interested in this.

  7. Ryan got owned! Like he couldn’t afford sending it to the dry cleaners or buying a new suit.
