Those who can never get enough George Clooney in their lives – and have already seen him in the currently-playing Ides of March – will get to see the silver-haired Oscar-winner on the big screen yet again later this year in The Descendants: a new comedy-drama from another Academy Award-winner, writer/director Alexander Payne (About Schmidt, Sideways).
While the previous Descendants trailer offered a succinct outline of the film’s storyline – and suggested that Clooney could snag more awards for his acting efforts – the second theatrical preview is essentially a teaser. Still, does it get the job done (re: make the movie look good)?
Clooney stars in Descendants as Hawaii-dwelling land baron Matt King, whose life is turned upside when his wife is (possibly, permanently) injured in a boating accident – forcing Mr. King to “fix” his relationship with his daughters: rebellious teen Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) and “precocious” Scottie (Amara Miller).
However, here is the “meaty” part of the Descendants storyline:
When Alexandra drops the bombshell that her mother was in the midst of a romantic fling at the time of the accident, Matt has to take a whole new look at his life, not to mention his legacy, during a week of momentous decisions. With his girls in tow, he embarks on a haphazard search for his wife’s lover.
With that in mind – check out the second trailer for The Descendants:
Descendants director of photography Phedon Papamichael – who also handled the cinematography on Payne’s Sideways and Clooney’s Ides of March – looks to have done an excellent job of envisioning the film’s Hawaiian setting as something (appropriately) less welcoming and gloomier than most outsiders would imagine. Likewise, the film also looks to feature Payne’s trademark mix of dark (semi-) broad comedy with somber drama and genuine heartbreak – and arguably appears to pull off that balancing act in less of a hokey fashion than this award season’s other upcoming title about a distraught father attempting to heal his broken family (ie. writer/director Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo). So that’s all quite encouraging.
The Descendants cast includes the likes of George Clooney, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Shailene Woody, Amara Miller, and Beau Bridges. It was co-scripted by Alexander Payne, Community star Jim Rash, and writer/actor Nat Faxon (The Cleveland Show), based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
Look for the film to hit U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2011.
