Straight after just about everyone on the planet saw The Dark Knight, we all thought (amongst praising the hell out of the thing) about when the inevitable sequel was going to get made. And there have been rumors abounding ranging from who will play the villain(s) to Christopher Nolan holding out on signing on the dotted line to get a bigger paycheck. But of course these were all rumors, even if some people out there took them as truth.
Well it seems we might have our first real glimpse as to what’s happening with a sequel via an interview with executive producer of The Dark Knight Michael Uslan (who will be back for the sequel):

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the “Dark Knight” sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.
Now I wouldn’t think that someone in that position, who’s not only been involved in the revamp of the series but also with Tim Burton’s Batman, would say something like this unless there was at least some truth to it. If he indeed has something to keep “tight-lipped” about: That they’re in talks to see what direction they are going to take with Batman Begins 3 (for lack of a better title at the moment). Which also means Nolan is at least lending his ear as he is after all, the creative force behind the last two films.
2011 isn’t all that far away so my guess would be that you’ll hear more news over the next couple of months about Nolan signing on (it’d be a shame if he didn’t come back for at least this next one), possibly hints at who the villain will be and by this time next year they’ll be in pre-production.
Even if Uslan is just generalizing, this piece of news certainly sounds a lot more legitimate than the likes of Eddie Murphy being cast as The Riddler, now doesn’t it?

@John Abrahamson
I am a bit confused, where do you get that information?
@ John Abrahamson
“Dark Night was already a sequel to Batman Begins, hardly anyone knows that and it pisses me off”
ummm dude that’s the equivalent of saying that hardly anyone new that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a sequel to the Last Crusade or that The Two Towers was the sequel to the Fellowship of the Ring..
What exactly were you talking about and who have you been talking to..there are probably three people in North AMerica who didn’t know that and you must know them all…
I’m also kinda against a love interest, but if they can pull off a reasonable Catwoman “genesis”, you have the best of both worlds.
And … Wrath of course.
Wrath? Why did I just type that?
I thought I was immune to subliminal messages … dammit.
WUH-HA-HA-HA
My plot is working…one down 300 million to go…then WB will have to surrender to my covert subliminal propaganda campaign for “The Wrath” and put him in the Dark Knight sequel..
Actually I think the whole news is about as blank as a check with no money and no signed contracts. Uslan is really full of it.
@ Joe Smith
Wouldn’t a cheque with no money be a bounced cheque and not a blank cheque?
Uslan is full of the rights to Batman on film…wait..no… that’s a website..ah..You know what I mean…
Catwoman as the villain in the next Batman would be perfect because she plays two roles the villain and the love interest that’s killing two birds with one stone it would be perfect i don’t see why they wouldn’t take it in this direction
That is kind of like asking why they do not go with Black Cat in Spiderman 4.
See, Catwoman, while a love interest for Batman and a villian, just does not have the real threat factor of a side villian.
Also, this slows down the pace of the film, making it a bit awkward for the male audience. However, Catwoman would certainly attract a female audience and give females a sense of dominance and confidence.
Now , Balck Cat( from Spider man ) will do a similar thing, but then you have to link up the plot with the Avengers or Dr. Strange or some other superhero .
Oh, and Catwoman will take away the overall magnitude of the plot because now you have a love interest taking up too much screen time . This did not happen when the Rachel and Bruce love relationaship was inttroduced.
Whatever man I don’t care what the do as long as when the movie comes out I wet my jeans like I did with the last too.
Just saw this comment: “I agree but the love interest aspect is usually to draw in the female audiences or at least to get wives and girlfriends into theaters as well…”
Aw, heck – not me! I’m usually annoyed with the love interest angles as most of the time I can’t stand the female characters. LOL Yeah, just leave that stuff out.
Recast the Joker! Might as well, we know we are going to want more of the character and Heath Ledger would probably want it that way. Improve on the character.
eddie murphy as the ridler? that would be stupid…. anyway as of the name… if they were gonna do the joker again a possible the dark knight returns movie would be pretty cool
*SPOILER* The title of “The Dark Knight Returns” is out because it references a comic book written by Frank Miller in which Batman is retired for 10 years and comes out of retirement to save the city again from a new gang. Batman then fights Superman at the end of the comic and is killed by Superman, only to rise again and destroy the batcave and mansion to go back underground to continue the fight. So unless they plan on ending the franchise, re-casting Mr. Bale, and taking the films in another direction I would not expect to see the title for a while. Perhaps if the antagonist is an alien a title like Batman and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull would work
Rumors I heard is that the Riddler might be played by Johnny Depp…good move in my opinion.
I think the riddler is one of the only major villains they could portray as being realistic. I think James Franco, or someone like him, would make a great riddler who is a sadistic killer when he starts takin out people who he thinks are wrong doers (kinda like the main guy from the saw movies does), and he can look at himself as the good guy who does good by taking out the scum life, but who are actually decent people. Also, i think they could easily bring back Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face, and maybe we could see Batman vs Riddler vs Two-Face.
Recast the Joker. The Joker’s story in Nolan’s Batman universe isn’t done. It will be a shame to let Ledger’s brilliant depiction go to waste.
Personally I don’t think anybody can recast and be the Joker. Heath Ledger did such a great job that nobody could even look at another person and think of them as the Joker. If they did redo the Joker, then he can’t actually be the same Joker, but maybe his brother or a copycat killer or something, but they can’t do the real Joker without Heath Ledger. That’s just my opinion, but you are right that the Joker’s story isn’t done yet.
Get Dwayne Johnson to play Bane. He’s got the size, bulk, and height to dominate Batman. He’s a good enough actor to pull off a one dimensional villain, too. We’ve already seen most of the other villains, and even though Bane appeared in that crap 4th movie he was nothing more than a grunt. Follow that Knightfall story. . .
