‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer #3: More Story Revealed & Catwoman’s Debut

Published 3 years ago by , Updated July 18th, 2013 at 9:37 am,

The Dark Knight Rises trailer 3 is here! The Avengers is the belle of the ball in theaters right now, but Chris Nolan’s finale to the Batman trilogy is far from forgotten – and will surely be in the forefront again (for better or worse) after people get a look at the new footage.

After three trailers we have some of the answers that fans have been wondering and/or worrying about – plus new questions to wonder and/or worry about. Scroll down to the comments for the discussion.

The best word to describe this third Dark Knight Rises trailer would probably be “crescendo.” Starting from Selina Kyle’s (Anne Hathaway) ominous whispered threat to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) about coming storms – to the final shot of The Bat hovercraft soaring and barrel-rolling across the skies of Gotham, this trailer attempts to showcase just how epic this third and final film is going to be.

Admittedly, however, this is clearly a trailer that is meant for a big screen – the final scene of The Bat hovercraft seemingly taking advantage of the film’s impressive IMAX format (along with many other scenes glimpsed in the trailer).

Here are a couple of things of note, in terms of questions that have been answered:

  • Catwoman seems like a cynical crook-for-hire, but one who eventually takes up Batman’s cause. I have a feeling the new footage will assuage a lot of doubt about Anne Hathaway getting the role.
  • The audio on Bane’s (Tom Hardy) vocals has definitely been cleaned up and clarified. While it’ll be easier to understand, there is something lost in the effect the ravaged, scratchy version had.
  • The movie seems to be a combination of the Batman comic book storylines “Knightfall“, “Knightquest“, and “No Man’s Land“. Click any of those titles to learn more about the respective stories.

As for new questions and worries:

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard’s characters – for the moment – seem to be no more than what they are: a local Gotham cop and Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend, respectively. Rumors have long been flying about one or both of them having secret identities of their own – but Nolan is playing that close to the vest for now (or, scary thought, not playing that game at all).
  • Looking at the story structure, it seems like there will be a significant portion of this film in which there is no Batman, just Bruce Wayne. Don’t know how fans will feel about that.
  • Side characters like Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cop character and other supporting players like Commissioner Gordon, Miranda Tate and Catwoman may not serve as suitable substitutions for Batman in a “Batman movie.”

As we discuss on this week’s Screen Rant Podcast, Dark Knight Rises in some ways has it harder than, say, The Amazing Spider-Man. Nolan and Co. have HUGE expectations to live up to – critically, financially, publicly – and even if he does a really good job, anything short of goosebump-inducing awe will be considered a disappointment. By contrast, if Spider-Man is even marginally entertaining, it’ll be deemed a pleasant surprise.

  1. While the Avengers might be your typical fun with a touch of corniness summer ride … Dark Knight has it all …. polished with class.

  2. I find I tend to be less skeptical of movies that “undersell” than movies that “oversell”. I think it’s better to keep people a little bit in the dark with trailers than to purposely have them convulsing with hype that is bound to fall flat, even if the movie ends up being good. (Avengers, duh.)

I’m far more the DC fan anyway, so if I do see Avengers, it’s mostly for Iron Man. Otherwise, Batman is mandatory, he’s my god. :P.

    • your knock at avengers falls flat considering the fact that avengers has proved to be a major critical and commercial success.

and yes i can attest that it was a FANTASTIC movie which did not disappoint because i live in australia.

      • I’m not saying Avengers is a bad movie, I have no idea.

I am saying the more you hype something, the more you set it up for dissapointment, even if it ends up being good.

I am skeptical of heavily marketed franchises getting good reviews. But not every movie is The Hunger Games ;). I should try and be fair.

        • @Wow

Well, I’ve seen The Avengers, and let me tell you, with all of the hype it’s getting, it STILL doesn’t disappoint. That’s when you know it’s a good movie…

          • Good thing I’m seeing it anyway ^_^.

  3. All I want is just a frigging Batarang in this movie.

  4. I know I’m late but is that J Gordon Levitt as batman at the 1:48 mark ?

  5. I know I’m late but is that J Gordon Levitt as batman at the 1:48 mark?

  6. After seeing the Batwing I can’t help but feel a bit saddened that there will probably never be a Batman Beyond movie. Perhapse after this movie when WB inevitably finds a new director for their #1 comicbook movie hero they’ll finally get around to doing that :/

  7. Apologies if it’s been mentioned, but that’s Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn being told by Bane, “I’m Gotham’s reckoning”. Didn’t know he was in this. Great actor, in what is likely a very small part.

Love the trailer: dark, ominous, powerful.

  8. The Dark Knight Rises is simply a “war movie”, in my opinion.

  9. Still not convinced. Although it is better than what I’ve seen so far, it’s still not doing it for me. I still don’t like Hathaway, and Bane still looks and sounds horrible. Bane, by the way is supposed to be Hispanic, he neither looks, nor sounds Hispanic.

    • I’ve met Mexican ppl who look like Tom Hardy, and have white skin….He looks Hispanic enough. As for his sound?… so what. He sounds bad ass and that is what Bane needs to sound like.

      • Really? I’ve always imagined Bane with a heavy hispanic accent. And apparently the people who made the animated series and the video games did also…

        • Bane sounds like a young Christopher Lee.

    • And I always thought Black Widow was Russian.

Both films look amazing to me.

  10. Jack Nicholson in The Dark Knight Rises?

  11. It took me forever to realize that the “air-streams” behind the Bat/Batwing are not “air-streams” at all, but *MISSLES!* That would explain why they looked a little off. Holy s***, I had no idea they were missles :O. This trailer just became so much cooler!

  12. This morning i was listening to Absolute radio and they were doing a piece on the Dark knight rises, When they were filming in nottingamshire the film crew over stayed, there was a party booked at the manor where they were filming and the props were still there and the guy talking on the radio was a magician and they were in the back of the manor in a cemetary with 3 headstones but two of the headstones covered, Must be his mum and dad but who is the third headstone for?? Does Bane literally kill Bruce/Batman let me know your views on this???

    • A headstone of rachel dawes? She was really close to bruce wayne and perhaps deserves a place in the wayne cemetery…

  13. Some were contemplating the possibility of Bane being a new moniker Ra’s al ghul goes under if he survived the events of Begins.

I find that highly unlikely though. Still has me wondering why Bane speaks in the same manner as Ra’s though.

Damn it Nolan the movie isn’t out yet but your’re already playing with my mind :D

  14. seeing anne trying to act sexy is hilarious, she’s actually sexy when she’s not trying XD

  15. After watching this for the 10th time I have to say my favorite part is at @ 1:45 when you see Bane hitting Batman with what is known in MMA as a Superman Punch.

  16. It’s most likely just me, but Bane needs to be bigger.

    • @JC Perry.

I completely agree – and i think Bane’s less than convincing impact is what could hurt TDKR the most, especially when everyone will be comparing Bane to Heath Leger’s Joker.

      • I wonder if they’ll reference the Jocker at all, since he was left alive at the end.

  17. I have a feeling bane will be so impossible to stop that Btaman must kill him and also kill himself will trying, just my opinion

  18. This is the superhero movie we deserve but not the one we need right now, you know since The Avengers is out.

  19. This trailer is cool but I’m kinda concerned about Cat Woman… These guys have their opinions though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjT12nmXPN0

  20. michael caine is amazing as alfred

  21. this trailer has really grown on me. at first i thought it wasn’t as great as the last trailer for tdk but the more i see it, the better i think it is.the way it slowly grows and then the last shot of the bat in action is quite stunning

  22. Just one question, who is the man in the back at 1:45 during the bane v batman fight?

    • Storm shadow!

    • looked like lucious fox

  23. Who is in the background at 1:45 in all white

  24. Not a fan of “the Bat”. It does resemble the Batwing from Batman Beyond but I wasn’t a real fan of it either. Why do I have a feeling that the Batmobile can fly now? So it is a Batmobilecycleplane now? Is that anything like the truck boat truck from the Squidbillies? The rest looks really crisp and I am sure it will be fantastic I am just bummed that with the exception of the cycle, they have just ruined the bat vehicles in this series. I was never a fan of the Pod, now I am not a fan of the “Bat”. What is funny is it looks more like a dung beetle than a bat.

  25. That is the worse catwoman I have ever seen in my life. What’s with the blue tooth in her ear. Lol. This doesn’t even look remotely as good as the 1st two Batmans & now since seeing The Avengers Im really not interested @ all. Batman’s helmet looks too bulky. Catwoman looks lame. He prolly held back da action scenes because there arent that many in there & doesnt wanna ruin the movie, but hopefully the story knocks me off my feet, because usually when I’m not excited to see a movie I’m pleasantly surprised so I guess we’ll see.

    • batmans helmet is the same from the TDK and you do not even know what gadget catman is using.

  26. Does anyone recall that particular bossy dominating dog in the critically-acclaimed animation movie ‘Up(2010)’ ??? It had so squeaky funny voice and yet it was scary due to its deeds. In the same way, Bane…

  27. I really have to admit. I loved the old Bane voice. It just sounded “metal” if that makes any sense. In a way even if you couldn’t understand half of his lines it gives the movie replay value. The voice was much more raw than it sounds now and definitely does not sound as it was intended when it was recorded. It’s like putting a spoiler on a car that doesn’t need one.

  28. The more I see of TDKR, the more convinced I am that I don’t know s*** about the movie…and I love it. When I walked into TDK in almost four years ago I thought I had it all figured out, but I had been sooo wrong. I realized that about the only resemblance between the trailer and the movie itself was the tone of feeling of the movie. What can we really deduce from trailers that contain very brief, repeated, out-of-sequence glimpses, scant dialogue, and amount to no more than five minutes? We can speculate all we want about TDKR, but we should never really assume that we can actually beat the Nolans – especially Christopher – at their own game.

  29. The more trailers I see the more this movie looks like Rocky 3.
