Bradley Cooper Drops Out of ‘The Crow’ Remake; Mark Wahlberg Rumors Resurface

Published 3 years ago by , Updated August 6th, 2013 at 2:28 pm,

It’s been a strange road for The Crow remake. We’ve been covering the film since 2008, and during that time it’s gone through multiple directors, writers, and lead actors. Now, it appears that The Crow is going through yet another change.

Most recently, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Hangover star Bradley Cooper were linked to the project. Fresnadillo is still directing the film, but it looks like he’s going to need another star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cooper has left the project due to scheduling conflicts with Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost. (Such is the life of a hot Hollywood A-lister.) Cooper’s departure opens up the role for another actor, and, interestingly, one of the names being discussed is a blast from the past.

In addition to the news that Cooper is leaving the film, THR reports that Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg are being considered as possible replacements. Fans might recall that Wahlberg was offered the lead role for the film last year, but he announced that he would not be playing the part a couple of months later.

One of the reasons Wahlberg said he dropped out of The Crow was because his preferred director (Stephen Norrington) was no longer attached to the film. Considering that Norrington still isn’t on board, it seems unlikely that Wahlberg would return to the project, but stranger things have happened.

The rumor that Channing Tatum may be involved the project makes more sense, and could actually be a good turn for the actor. With lead roles in films like G.I. Joe, Tatum has become a legitimate movie star and is one of the few actors in Hollywood that could get audiences excited about yet another Hollywood remake. Whether you like him or not, he definitely fits the part and makes sense from the studio’s perspective.

What do you think? Is Cooper’s departure disappointing? Could Channing Tatum succeed in a gritty  reboot of The Crow, or will nobody be able to fill Brandon Lee’s shoes as the vengeful rocker Eric Draven?

  1. Jason Momoa! I keep saying it…For the love of our dear Lord and savior!….Jason Momoa!

    • Jason momoa I could see. (If need be)

    • He’s too damn big..

  2. Dont you think it’s weird that Bradley Cooper would drop out of doing The Crow remake because he’s making a movie with Alex Proyas, the director of the original The Crow?

  3. Why????

This is a classic. The numerous “sequels” have shown how poorly remakes of this film have been received. Brandon Lee died making the original and it is still an awesome movie. The emotion of James O’Barr’s original comic lives and breaths in The Crow. I just don’t see how remaking it will do it any more justice than it has already been done. The original is still one of my favorite movies. It would be one thing if there was room to improve it, but it is exactly what it should have been. A remake will only be a retelling, not an improvement of the original. Pass.

    • I agree the original is the best and they should leave it alone

  4. I’ve already replied on this news a while ago, but I feel like I need to add something more.

I’ve had this book for over 4 years – “The Crow: The Story Behind the Film”, from Bridget Baiss – and before I actually had the courage to read it, my opinion was rather flexible around this ‘remake’, even though I still didn’t want it to happen. If it did, I wouldn’t go out on the cinema and watch it, but I’d watch it later.

After going through all those pages from the book, I felt like I was actually inside the whole process of making this movie live, and better, I think I got closer to Brandon Lee (as anyone elese who has read this book, the writer herself too, as felt), because of everyone’s testimonials and so on.

Brandon really put his heart and soul into this movie. I can say that 90% of all that emotion that we see there came from him because he really wanted to make things good, perfect and gave all he had. Everyone said that throughout the pages.

Before the movie was even on his firts steps, it was really hard for the young and unexperienced producers to have a green light. They didn’t have high budget, they had to dwell with inumerous unforeseen situations, but yet they still went on and gave us a masterpiece. Everyone was fully commited, especially Brandon. I had no idea how freezing it was (the whether) they they were rolling. Brandon did not care at all whilst he was bareless and shirtless under fake (freezing) rain filming the moments when Eric revives.

This was his movie. This was everybody’s movie (producers, assistantes, makeup artists, wardrobe artist, actors)…

Then the unexpected happened, and yet they finished the movie for Brandon and Brandon only.

Why, oh why, do they have to do a remake? Just let it be. In all movies that don’t have to have a remake, this one is #1.

P.S.: I suggest you to read the book, too (The Crow: The Story Behind the Film by Bridge Baiss).

  5. If Chanum Tatum gets the role…. I will punch a baby. Eric Draven is suppose to be a struggling muscian not a eminem wannabe wigger talking pretty boy d-bag. It needs someone gritty and dark like Brandon Lee was. Marky Mark also I don’t see in such a role as this. They HAVE to pick the damn right person to do such a movie as this. I don’t even know who I would like to see in such a part as this. I would hope for a no name. No one too famous. But please for the LOVE OF GOD DO NOT PICK THAT D-BAG CHANUM that would totally ruin this movie. I would rather sh^t in my hands and clap then see him RUIN Brandons movie.

  6. Seriously, think of the original and tell what would you like to change? What could be changed?
They even managed to make it dark and violent, but with almost no gore…

  7. Why do u have to make a remake of this moive when Brandon Lee put everthing into it. He did his best and this is how u repay him by make this it’s a real let down. He died making this movie and all y’all can do is hurt what he made good. I’m sorry but this is the way i feel about it. I could wright so much more but. I’m not going to.

  8. I think there is a way to do this that would honor Brandon, and my own anxiety stems from whether anyone powerful enough will keep to the necessary integrity. That’s what will ultimately make or break this film for me. There is a lot of grief around this movie and Brandon’s memory, and if it were given some sort of closure, somehow… that’s for artists to create. I challenge them to do that. If they don’t, it will be like rubbing salt into an open wound in the public. I hope they see this. Please email me.

  9. I think Jeff Hardy is the guy to play Eric Draven! He Has similar attributes to the original Eric Draven. Yes I’m aware He is currently a professional Wrestler for Impact Wrestling, but It should be a strong Possibility. If he is offered the oppurtunity and, and is a good actor of course. That would be Awesome:)

    • Hell Yes Jeff Hardy!!!

    • I love the crow so much that I’m getting crows on wrist in memory of brandon. And jeff hardy is my all time fave wrestler but let’s leave the crow with brandon and make another comic book. But if jeff pulled it off id like it.

    • Jeff Hardy can’t even do a promo hyping a match or a feud he’s in to save his life. He’s got no personality when he talks. Plenty of it in the ring, but when he opens his mouth, it’s dull.

  10. They didnt need to do this anymore than the Nightmare on Elm st remake.

  11. No not tatum

  12. Find some young unknown actor. Hell or even that guy who played caleb in the covanent. Even he’d be better than channing Tatum

  13. All I have to say is Jason momoa is NOT the character for this movie. I and many others feel that this is a movie not to be remade. Bruce Lee worked hard to become who he was and still to this day is. Only one of his movies to tell the story of his life , came out to be Amazing done by Jason Scott Lee. That movie was done out of respect for an amazing man. The original crow on the other hand tried to branch off and make a “new and improved crow” which in turn failed horribly. Brandon Lee is the crow and everything in the movie was done perfectly Brandon Lee deserves better. The original crow is and will be the only crow. If people decide to remake this movie all of the hard work Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee did to make their future be unforgettable will be tarnished.

Think of it this was if you did something perfectly would you change anything about it ??????

Someone said something earlier I can’t remember who . They said, “if you are going to do anything to this movie of the original crow, don’t remake it remaster it. Adjust audio quality, digitally remaster, imaging so on and so forth but don’t remake the movie at all.”

I know Bruce Lee did not have anything to do with this movie I am just making a point to some families hard work

  15. I was actually thinking Ben foster .His acting in 30 days of night proves he’s capable of pulling it off

    • Ben Foster is a pretty good choice! Since you brought up 30 days of night, what do you think about Josh Harnett as Eric Draven? I heard Daniel Day Lewis’ name dropped a few times in the discussion. What may happen is that they end up casting an actor from some cable miniseries, someone born from outside of the US. That seems to be the trend nowadays–not the cable miniseries thing but the selection of actors from countries outside the US to play ‘superhero’ roles. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Anyways, by any chance, have you seen my keys? I always seem to misplace them. Gosh!

  16. Don’t remake this film. Surely all these ‘changes’ are signaling that a remake is not meant to be. Whoever the actor may be, they will not live up to Brandon Lee, we all know that. If something ain’t broke, don’t fix it! This will be a waste of time, and money.

  18. If they demand a remake, why not Johnny Depp? He has the scope and experience to handle the role.

    • I think the age factor plays an important part into who they cast as the next Eric Draven. Johnny Depp certainly has the acting chops, I’ll agree with you on that, but he is almost 50! As ageless as he might appear on screen, I just don’t see him ‘adding’ any more depth to the character.I think what we fans need is a performance that is a pleasant surprise from some low-key actor.

  19. Chamning Tamnurn is a terrible idea for Eric Draven. They’d be better off not, making this film than using him as the lead role. Dude can’t act, he’s just a good looking dude the ladies like.

  20. Joseph Gordon Levitt anyone?

  21. The Crow has been my all time favorite movie since it came out, and while im not thrilled with them doing a remake, if its gonna happen then dont get chantatum or mark wahlburg. honestly i like joseph gordon levitt as a possibility, i also think Stephen Dorff would be a great person to put in the part.

  22. Oh! I also think that Sean Patrick Flannery could handle this role very well.

  23. Please do not remake this movie! I find the thought of Tatum in a crow movie to be offensive. Leave it to Hollywood to ruin everything sacred.

  24. I don’t believe its necessary to remake this. Do you remake E.T.? Casablanca? But if your so incline I would like to see what hasn’t be done with the role and flip it, make Eric Draven a Girl. how would she react given the same predicament?. Hell has no fury like a woman scorn! I think it could bring another dynamic to the role without tarnishing the original. Peace Love Revolution

  25. Wahlberg killed max payne, Tatum has never taken a role so dark, Cooper along with Tatum and Wahlberg are one dimensional actors, always depicting the same mannerisms and accents. Johnny Depp or Robert Downy Jr are the more qualified prospects.

  26. Joseph Gordon Levitt

    • Incredible actor..I can picture him with the long hair and make-up in a dark, rainy psychotic scene…

    • Joseph might pull it off….or the stunt double for heath as the joker

  27. I have loved this film since i first saw it about 15 years ago, i was 11. It is and always will be my favourite film. i agree that the brandon lee film should not be remade but, after reading the graphic novel the film is based on, a new imagining done with all the technology that they have in hollywood could be a good thing. The only major cause for concern is the actor they choose. the last actor who got into a role convincingly enough was Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight as The Joker. unless they can find another actor with those kind of acting skills the film will bomb no matter what kind of money is thrown at it. Personally, my choice would be Tom Hardy. his performance in Bronson was nothing short of amazing and the major filmd he has done (Inception, Warrior, The Dark Knight Rises) have all been well recieved by critics and fans worldwide

    • Wow it’s really funny just a minute before I read your post I was thinking that if he had lived I would not have minded if Heath Ledger did the role. I’m not saying I’m all for a remake, I was 13 when this movie came out I loved in than just as much as I love it now. Back than if you hadn’t seen or heard of the movie well that was, hmm blasphemy is a good word. The moment you said I saw The Crow, you were cool. Now at 31 I have recently taken a film class, and it’s mostly people in their early twenties, and the fact that almost every one of them had never even heard of the movie, well we all have our favorite movies when we were young but I never thought I would live to see the day where people have not heard of The Crow. They also don’t know David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick films, and they call themselves film students! So I at least took it upon myself as being older to introduce The crow and other classics from my generation films of the 80′s and 90′s, which most will always be better no matter how much cgi directors use

  28. Noooooo Channing Tatum had better not even think about trying to play the role of Eric Draven.

  29. if Mark Dacascos was a little younger he would do a great job I think. He’s closest to looking like brandon in my opinion. Actually, maybe he can still do it. He has aged really well.
