Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson’s days at the Los Angeles Police Department are numbered. TNT announced that its tentpole crime drama The Closer will come to a close after its seventh season, scheduled to premiere next fall and conclude in the early 2012.

According to the announcement, the final decision came down to none other than Kyra Sedgwick,  who has a producer credit for the series in addition to the lead role.

The Closer has been a critical and ratings success for TNT, ever since its debut in 2005. Its impressive mix of cop show action and character development allows it to reach across the gender gap, consistently setting viewership records for TNT and cable shows in general. Sedwick’s portrayal of Brenda Johnson has earned her dozens of TV award nominations and an Emmy win in 2007. She was quoted in the network’s statement:

“I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we’ve created on The Closer… I want to thank TNT and Warner Bros. Television, as well as the incredible fans of THE CLOSER, for all of their unwavering support over the last seven years.”

The show has distinguished itself in a field crowded with paint-by-numbers crime procedurals. While it doesn’t stray too far from the heart of similar cop shows like Law & Order: SVU, the real draw has been the series’ focus on its ensemble of characters. The pilot episode established Johnson as both a feminine fish-out-of-water transferring from the Atlanta Police Department to LA, and a hold-no-punches grande dame in investigations and interrogations.

Johnson’s relationship with her high-profile investigative squad and Assistant Chief Pope (played by J.K. Simmons of Spider-Man and Law & Order fame) receive almost as much attention as the prerequisite murder of the week. Other highlights include series-long love interest, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney, to be seen in Green Lantern), and on-again, off-again antagonist Captain Raynor (Mary McDonnell, Battlestar Galactica).

As a big fan of the series, I’m happy to hear that it’s ending. That may sound strange, but hear me out: too many great shows are either canned prematurely (Terriers and Lone Star were some lamentable casualties this year) or forced to go on long past their peak until they stagnate. Scrubs, Stargate  SG-1 and Law & Order: SVU all fall into this category, in my opinion, having become pale imitations of what made the shows great in their best seasons, usually the third or fourth.

I’m always pleased when producers realize that their show has had an excellent run and choose to end on a high note on their own terms. Lost and Battlestar Galactica probably could have continued for at least three more seasons each, but instead wrapped up and delivered  complete, satisfying series (though the Lost finale is certainly debatable). I applaud TNT and Kyra Sedgwick for having the foresight and decisiveness to give a great show a proper conclusion.

The Closer is currently wrapping up its sixth season, and airs Mondays at 9 on TNT.

  1. I love the show…. She never ceases to impress me with her wit and consistent “cop logic”. In one episode, I felt sorry for the perpetrator until she reminded her audience (me) about the victim…. Her life at work with all of her detectives; at home with Fritz, her parents, and her cat; and when she’s alone…. thinking, contemplating, and/or trying to heal after a traumatizing/depressing occurence, has entertained me many nights. I’m really sorry it’s ending…. Thank you for a great show.

  2. Great show sorry to see it end. Keys is a great actress.

  3. I cried when i read the closer will not be on for another season. The best show on tv. Kyra is so entertaining. My husband and i just loved to watch her and her fellow members of the Closer. Kyra we will miss y ou and knowing that what ever road you travel will be great for you, THANK YOu, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. For giving us good entertainment. Good luck and God Bless.

    • Kyra is absolutely the most refreshing character that has come to the fore in television in MANY years. I think she is 2nd only to Myrl Streep as the most entertaining actor ever. There are numerous entertainers, but none like those two. PLUS, the entire cast could not have been better chosen. I am 67 years old, retired but having to work part-time to make ends meet…..but I will somehow manage to purchase all of the episodes if I can.

  4. I will miss The Closer it was my favorite show, I hope some way and some how it will return!

    • It will return, too many people like the show and Kyra. No one else can take her place.

  5. I am totally bummed out to lose such a great show!!!! I and many others will greatly miss Kyra’s charecter!!! Kyra, I loved you in “Heart and Souls” and You made “the Closer” wonderful to watch week after week. I AM A FAN FOR LIFE!!! Wish I were on set for the finale! I cried my eyeballs out when Momma died!! Didn’t see that coming!! Come back Brenda, come back!!!!

  6. Favorite Episode: When the two ladies who were defrauding the sick people, and broke out fighting after the tricky confession Brenda led them into!! What a hoot!! Please don’t cancel this show!!! Please! Monday night won’t be the same without you!

  7. Favorite Episode: When the two ladies who were defrauding the sick people, broke out fighting after the tricky confession Brenda led them into!! What a hoot!! Please don’t cancel this show!!! Please! Monday night won’t be the same without you!

  8. Sorry 2 see my favorite show come 2 and end. Law & Order and now Closer . Other shows won’t fill the void.

  9. What a great send off for the closer. It has been one of the few descent shows on tv for years and It will be greatly missed. The new show has big shoes to fill.
I don’t like the product placement ads though.

  10. Kyra, I am so shock to see you leave the closer. You made the show. The way you relate to people is what made the show so endearing. I watched out of loyalty to your group, the new show (Major Crimes). I was not impressed. No one can take your place. What made the show work so well was you!, Your emotions, , actions, and style are what kept people coming back for more. You will be miissed by many, but is there a chance you could be coming back not necessarilly to major crimes but possibibly have some roles as the new DA investigated! I sure hope so. Good Lucy to you no matter what your nre endevers are. There is only one Kyra and only one Brenda for (MAJOR CRIMES. Hugs you are great Addie

  11. Please tell us where you are going and what you will be doing in the future, if you can Kyra,…if you will be making movies, a new t.v. series, etc. We are, and will always remain your loyal fans, and will miss you terrible. Good luck, and God Bless!! Will & Charlene

  12. I can’t think of another show that I have enjoyed more than The Closer. I’m so sad to see it go. It still had so many stories to tell. I admired Brenda’s character as a strong but very real woman. I would love it is there was a “movie of the week” in the future.

  13. Why isn’t Gaberal on the new series? as he stated he did not realize he was the one that was leaking the information, so why do you have to take him off the New Major Crime series? I really think he is a fine actor. Did he decide to quict or what.

  14. I really love the tv series and sad it will no longer be shown on tv.

  15. Not many tv shows have captured my attention like The Closer. I love this show so much. I hate to see it go. Thank you for the great work. Kyra, I’m a true and loyal fan of your work. Good luck to all of you guys.

  16. I have been a fan for years. I’am going to miss your show very much. I love the other cast member’s, but it just won’t be the same without Kyra. What are her plans now?

  18. I found these shows intertaining and fun to watch. I work at LAPD and it was fun to see the shots of the PD as well as around LA. I watched Season 7 and was wishing for more. O then, good-bye.

  19. Everyone loves what you guys are usually up too. This
kind of clever work and reporting! Keep up the excellent works
guys I’ve included you guys to our blogroll.

  20. Never watched this program on T.V, however did hear of it’t greatness. I got a ROKU and now I can watch it and have loved every episode. Love each character and hate there will be no 8th. Totally understand why show must not go on why wait for something so good to frizzle out. Thank you for good entertainment. I just hope you have something to replace this coming in the future.

  21. I cant believe this… i cant even watch the new show!!!! Brenda brong so much life to this show! The new b**** boring as hell! Find away to get her back! I don’t want to hear it! Make it happen! UGH….
