It’s been a good couple weeks of news for stop-motion animation. First, we learned that Guillermo del Toro’s planned Pinocchio retelling is attracting new financiers (rather than falling into development hell), then The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline director Henry Selick gained studio backing for his new original project The Shadow King – and today, Laika formally announces its third feature-length production after Coraline and ParaNorman, titled The Boxtrolls.

Boxtrolls is based on Alan Snow’s popular children’s novel Here Be Monsters!, with helmer duties assigned to Graham Annable – a storyboard artist on Coraline and story artist on ParaNorman – and Anthony Stacchi, who severed as an effects animator on Selick’s James and the Giant Peach adaptation and co-director of the CGI-animated feature Open Season.

The cast includes Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark on Game of Thrones), Elle Fanning (Ginger & Rosa), Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) and nominee Toni Collette (Fright Night), Jared Harris (The Mortal Instruments), Richard Ayoade (The Watch), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) as well as the inseparable Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End).

Here is the official synopsis:

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

The stop-motion animation medium seems an excellent fit for the exaggerated sensibilities and nature of the Boxtrolls universe; not to mention, after Coraline and ParaNorman (read our review), Laika has proven its commitment to churning out quality products that excel as amusing, yet emotionally-challenging and thoughtful, entertainment for both younger and older audiences alike. Similarly, the expressive voice cast and filmmakers – who have earned their position, by working their ways up the ranks – gives us all the more reason to be excited.

The Boxtrolls opens in theaters on October 17th, 2014. For more about the film, check out the full press release (included below).

Mr. Knight said, “The Boxtrolls is a visually dazzling mash-up of gripping detective story, absurdist comedy, and steampunk adventure with a surprisingly wholesome heart. It’s Dickens by way of Monty Python. Tony and Graham have crafted a strange and beautiful world replete with fantastical creatures, good-for-nothing reprobates, madcap antics, and rip-roaring feats of derring-do. But at its core, like all LAIKA films, The Boxtrolls is a moving and human story with timelessness and powerful emotional resonance. We’re thrilled to partner with Focus Features and Universal to bring this remarkable story to family audiences around the world.”

Mr. Schamus commented, “Following our successful collaborations on ParaNorman andCoraline, we are delighted to be embarking on a third wondrous adventure with the LAIKA artisans who transform everyday materials into living creatures infused with dimension, humor, and soul. With a wonderfully appealing menagerie of fun characters, and a generous, open heart at its center, The Boxtrolls will be a must-see for family audiences.”

  1. Sounds suspiciously like the ‘Borrowers’…without the boxes of course.

  2. I raised an eyebrow in skepticism once I got to the part about the cheese. It seemed like a dumb idea. But, then again, I’d thought the same with ParaNorman—and I was so wrong.

Looking forward to more Laika productions.

  3. I will see anything with Simon Pegg and/or Nick Frost in it.

  4. Keep it going Laika!!!
