The Bourne Legacy Trailer The Bourne Legacy Trailer: A New Unstoppable Killing Machine

There’s been some confusion surrounding The Bourne Legacy, which is neither a direct continuation of the storyline from previous Bourne movies, nor a reboot of the franchise. Instead, it’s a semi-spinoff that revolves around a different “programmed” Treadstone assassin – as played by Hawkeye from The Avengers (a.k.a. Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner).

Bourne film series screenwriter Tony Gilroy is juggling both writing and directing duties on Bourne Legacy. His involvement with the new chapter in this popular action-thriller franchise – combined with the film’s respectable cast (more on that in a moment) – was enough to land this not-a-reboot installment a spot on our Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list.

Renner stars in Bourne Legacy as “Aaron Cross,” a new highly-lethal government spook “whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.” In other words, history ends up repeating itself in the aftermath of The Bourne Ultimatum, once Cross goes rogue – forcing government agents like Pam Landy (Joan Allen) and Noah Vosen (David Strathairn) to track him down, by whatever means necessary.

In addition to returning Bourne universe players like Allen, Strathairn, and Albert Finney, the Bourne Legacy cast also includes decorated stars such as Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz (not to be confused with Gina Carano), along with Oscar Isaac (Drive) and Stacy Keach (Prison Break) in supporting roles. As you will see in the Bourne Legacy teaser, though, this is first and foremost Renner‘s chance to show off more of his action star chops.

Based on this early footage, Gilroy has traded in the frantic shaky cam and kinetic editing that director Paul Greengrass favored in Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum, in favor of the steadier, but still exhilarating approach of Doug Liman in Bourne Identity. For those who were never big fans of Greengrass‘ style, the news that they’ll actually be able to see what Renner is doing during Bourne Legacy‘s action sequences should be most welcome.

If there’s one potential note of concern to take away from this otherwise promising teaser, it’s that Bourne Legacy could suffer a bit from retconning. That is, Cross is being setup as a much more “stable” and effective killer than even Jason Bourne… and yet, throughout the previous films, there was always the implication that Bourne was far and away the deadliest operative produced by Treadstone. Not that this will detract from Bourne Legacy‘s quality as a standalone story, but still…

The Bourne Legacy arrives in theaters around the U.S. on August 3rd, 2012.

  1. Sold me. I loved the original trilogy but this looks amazing. I knew once renner signed in this film would be great. I’m a a big fan of his and love his acting style. I think they could easily tie in together with Damon returning and have them tag team would be cool. But this looks great. A great poster as well one of the coolest I’ve seen this year.

And isn’t Alex cross in the books. I never read them but I’ve read synopsis’ and summaries when te first film came out. Idk for sure. But the name sounds like it was in one if those.

    • I totally agree! Renner-Damon duo would kick big ass!

  2. O M friggin G, I just got ridiculously AMPED for this movie!!!

  3. Jeremy Renner is slowly inching his way to being the next big action star and I wanna ride along as he makes his way there. Not only is he starring in the avengers, which I’ve been waiting on for over 4 years but now he’s taking over one of my favorite trilogies so count me in it looks awesome

  4. AWESOME!!! DEFINITELY GONNA WATCH THIS AND PREFER THIS OVER SKYFALL!!!!

  5. I’m sold, the trailer looks awesome.

The poster is cool and Jeremy Renner looks badass.

    Good for him.

  6. I really like the trailer! But didnt Noah Vosen get caught in the last Borne film? Pam faxed over all that info on Jason and Treadstone and I just assumed Noah was soon to be in prison. Guess not.

  7. wow this looks really really good. :)

  8. Ahh crap! More shoulders and head..quick cut fights scenes.. Gonna see it nonetheless, but jeez, you should be able to see the action when there is action.

  9. this looks awesome!!! and the cast is pretty good

  10. Welcome to the program….Enough said.

  11. So is he a bad guy or good guy? That alone intrigues me.

  12. So happy to see the majority of people as generally excited for this as I am,I loved this trailer!!Introduced us to Renner’s new character, showed him kick new types of ass, showed Ed Norton being the boss(of Outcome?Maybe Renner’s character not from Treadstone?),clearly separated him from Bourne but still mentioned his Legacy(pun intended) and didn’t show TOO much like so many other trailers do nowadays.I believe Renner can pull this off and with Tony Gilroy who wrote the 1st three also directing this time around(don’t forget he’s an Oscar nominated director people!!) I really can’t wait for the 2nd official trailer and for August 3rd so I can sit my ass in that theater.

    “There Was Never Just One”

  13. I am soo sorry gang. Rant number 2. I looked at the trailer again(actually a few times), man I can not wait to see this film. So many questions.

Like, does that shot he recieves make him a little more stronger, faster, upgrade his senses, and makes him heal faster?

The cast looks great. Renner is perfect for this role.

  14. OMG… is this ‘teaser’ a total STUPID BORING ONE?
Seeing this, would you jump in your car and pay $15 ?
    I don’t think so.
If this teaser what the movie will be, I’ll pass.

Someone needs to employ people who know HOW to make a teaser or trailer.

  15. The comments on this preview are off base to the true fan of the bourne series. Let me first say that I enjoy Jeremy Renner as an actor and this would have made me more excited if the Bourne name wasn’t attached to the movie. The Bourne Legacy is the last of the series and I don’t understand how the movie series after putting some much work in making Matt Damon a believeable and effective face of Jason Bourne would change this drastically. The book installment of the Bourne Legacy gives a dynamic ending that would have gave movie writers ample material to compose a script to do the series justice….I’m just upset that the series name is not being as closely guarded as I think it should be.

  16. Renner is awesome, but…They WANTED to make another Bourne movie with Matt Damon and the director of the last two movies. They refused. Matt Damon said the script was “unreadable”.

But studios want money and the Bourne series is popular, so you get “Bourne Legacy”. This parody trailer says it all :-)
