20th Century Studios has released a new trailer for the upcoming horror-thriller The Boogeyman. The Boogeyman is based on the 1973 short story of the same name, which legendary author Stephen King wrote. The film initially entered production in 2018 with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods attached to write the project for 20th Century Fox's release. Disney's acquisition of the studio in 2019 and the accompanied switch to 20th Century Studios halted production. The Boogeyman was revived in 2021, though, when Rob Savage signed on to direct a screenplay from Mark Heyman that was heavily influenced by Beck and Woods' previous work.

Now, 20th Century Studios has revealed the first trailer for The Boogeyman. Check it out below:

The newest Stephen King adaptation appears to be as chilling as many of the author's other works that have made their way to the big screen. The Boogeyman trailer heavily features star Vivien Lyra Blair being followed and haunted by a mysterious being. It also stars Chris Messina as one of the main characters. Messina's father figure in the film frequented a therapist in the short story as he searched for answers to his ongoing personal matters and his home-life mystery.

Everything We Know About The Boogeyman

Vivien Lyra Blair in The Boogeyman

It took a while, but King's The Boogeyman is finally getting a proper film adaptation. The trailer offers a much better idea of what to expect from the horror film, from its dark atmospheric frights to the Boogeyman, itself, lingering behind lead star Blair. Blair recently appeared in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ as a young version of iconic Star Wars space royal Leia Organa. In the upcoming movie, the girl and her older sister will find themselves plagued by a mysterious figure in their home. The two then go through a struggle to get their father to pay attention.

The events of the film likely take place after the surprise death of the family's mother, which explains the father's vapid indifference to his children's claims. The Boogeyman short story itself didn't have much of a fleshed-out plot, meaning that the film should feature a lot of new details and situations that the story never got the opportunity to explore fully. Details about The Boogeyman remain limited, but it looks like the film will make plenty of changes to the original story while latching onto the overall messages and horror elements that made the short story so wildly popular in the first place. Experienced horror director Savage will aim to make that happen

The focus of the story for The Boogeyman movie will be a fresh one compared to the original. The trailer features Blair steadily throughout, indicating that the movie may show the events through her eyes instead of the father like in the short story. Blair has been wonderful in the big-name projects she has been featured in, and the perspective shift could lead to an interesting The Sixth Sense-like story led by the talented young performer. The movie won't be R-rated, though, with The Boogeyman getting a lowered PG-13 rating from the MPAA. Terror, violent content, teen drug use, and some strong language were the reasons given for the rating, so The Boogeyman shouldn't lack adult themes.
