‘The Avengers’ Super Bowl Commercial [Extended Version]

3 years ago by

We are a day short of three months until The Avengers opens in theaters, giving fans what they’ve been anticipating since The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man proved Marvel Studios could deliver big-budget, quality epics on their own. For casual moviegoers, there’s not been much to go on thus far, with Marvel having released only one version of The Avengers trailer, a trailer which revealed very little about the film’s story other than the fact it involves all of Marvel Studios’ characters who’ve had their own movie already.

That changes today with Marvel purchasing one of the extremely expensive time slots during the Super Bowl to showcase The Avengers to the world with brand new footage. It paid off with Iron Man back in 2008, will it work again for The Avengers?

For Marvel’s online fanbase, The Avengers director Joss Whedon jumped on Twitter this week along with fan-favorite stars of the series Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston to host a 30-minute Q&A. The end of the session was met with the release for a brief teaser for The Avengers Super Bowl spot (a trailer for a trailer), one that showcased a few bits of new footage highlighted by a shot of Loki piloting an alien vehicle.

The full Super Bowl TV Spot for The Avengers just debuted and you can now watch it below.

No matter what you think about that trailer, that 360° shot of Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America standing together can only be described in one word: EPIC.

Here are some select hi-res screen grabs from this trailer, including a look at Loki’s army and the clearest look yet at the Hulk:

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon, opening in theaters on May 4, 2012.

  1. i wonder how long until someone combines the 2 trailers? i have some ideas on how to merge them, even use some of the post CA credits scenes, just dont have the time, or the pc power to do it. what would be cool is if marvel were to screen the 1st 6-7 minutes like WB/DC did with TDKR, as i’m sure there is some kind of prologue to set up the story. i have watched the new trailer at least 15 times now, driving my kids crazy i’m sure!

  2. what ever they are movie looks bad ass can not wait!!!!!

  3. Nice trailer. Doesn’t reveal much which is good. I still hate Capt America’s costume. It takes me back to 80s superhero movies. The 360 shot made it all the more apparent compared to the others. Ah well

    • Friendly advice: if you don’t want the movie to be spoiled (and keep as much of it a surprise for as long as possible), then you should stay away from comment sections like these (they are filled with spoiler and potential spoilers – and we don’t always give a “Spoiler Warning”).

      • Thanks for the heads up!! I proceed with caution.

  4. All I can say is HULK! I love the big green guy and he has been what I have been waiting to see. Let Thor, Cap, Hawkeye, and Iron Man do their thing, HULK SMASH is going to make the movie for me.

  5. Wow, the comments are really getting kind of screwed up in here. Not sure what’s going on.

They had me at, “Mr Stark, I’d like to talk to you about the Avengers Initiative”, but this trailer really put it waaaaaayyyy over the top. Mr. Whedon, there’s no need to show anymore trailers; you have accomplished your initial goal. :-D

  6. I’m going to predict The Avengers will set a box office record.

  7. Honestly, how many times have you guys watched each trailer? Because honestly I’ve watched the avengers trailer coming up on 20 times and TAS about 11 or 12 and still climbing. I also wanted to thank Ken for that link to the ign Avengers trailer summary

    • I’ve watched it about 9 or 10 times on my own, but also whenever I send it to a friend online, I watch it again and put myself in the mindspace of “first time watching”

  8. Mark my words. “Those mysterious things are none other than Alpha Centaurians” ;)

  9. This movie has been a long time coming. Now to get back to the movie at hand, let’s not forget that the Red Skull is still out there he got beamed to another world and still hell bent to conquer the world, and if we go with the theory of traveling at the speed of light the Red Skull would have arrived not too many years before they found Cap, so he is still a possibility to be involved in this story line.

    • I’m curious, why are you going with the speed of light? If you’re referring to the Cosmic Cube, it allows FTL travel (instantaneous portal), if you’re talking about space ships they typically have FTL capabilities as well in these settings.

  10. “In the end it will be every man for himself” !?

Could it be that Loki’s army has a little individual surprise for each of the avengers – possibly leading into their individual sequel films?

i.e. Enchantress / Thor; Zemo / Cap etc.
