‘The Avengers’ Adding Secret Scene & Kevin Feige Talks Marvel Movie Future [Updated]

[The Avengers Secret Scene has been confirmed! Scroll below for details.]

Last night was the Hollywood premiere of Marvel’s The Avengers, and we’ve already posted some of the early Avengers reviews that hit the Internet immediately after the screening. Put simply: the consensus is that writer/director Joss Whedon and his all-star cast have done a pretty good job of crafting Marvel’s blockbuster superhero team-up film.

The good folks over at Marvel Studios are now out doing press rounds to promote The Avengers all the way down the final stretch to its theatrical release. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently discussed the future of the Marvel movie universe with our friend Steve Weintraub over at Collider, and while the folks over at Cinema Blend are reporting that a new secret scene for The Avengers is soon being filmed as a last-minute surprise for the theatrical release.

First, check out a breakdown of the topics that Collider covered with Feige:

  • He’s seen an unfinished version of The Amazing Spider-Man and says it is excellent and should quiet concerns over the idea of rebooting the franchise.
  • They have an option for Whedon to direct The Avengers 2 when and if the time comes.
  • There are currently no plans to do a new Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo.
  • Iron Man 3 starts filming in five weeks in North Carolina.
  • When approaching Iron Man 3, their gut instinct was to not make it be a pseudo-Avengers 2.  It’s a full-on Tony Stark movie.
  • Iron Man 3 is inspired by the first half of Iron Man 1 in that they’re metaphorically putting Tony back in the cave.  He’s stripped of everything, back against a wall, and has nothing but his intelligence to get him out.
  • Filming on Thor 2 begins in three months in London and it picks up where the first film left off in terms of Jane and Odin.
  • Thor 2 also addresses what’s been happening in the nine realms with the Asgardians unable to use the Bifrost.
  • Loki has a part in Thor 2, but there will be a different, big villain.
  • The crux of Thor 2 is continuing the dynamic between Thor and Jane, as well as the relationship between Thor and Odin.
  • Feige says there are no plans for Marvel and Pixar to team up on a feature.
  • Creative talks have been progressing for years between Marvel and Disney about possibly doing a Marvel property as an animated film.
  • Edgar Wright did not film something for Marvel recently, but Feige says to pay attention to Wright’s tweets in the coming months “and that might change.”
  • They’re still figuring out how many period flashbacks to include in Captain America 2.
  • The primary story of Captain America 2 will be Steve Rogers figuring out his place in the world. For the time-being, he’ll be staying with S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • They should announce by Comic-Con or before what’s coming out in May 2014.
  • Zak Penn did not write a Doctor Strange movie.
  • Feige says, “depending on what Edgar Wright films for us” circumstances could possibly force them to make three films in one year.

Avengers Secret Scene?

avengers hawkeye hulk The Avengers Adding Secret Scene & Kevin Feige Talks Marvel Movie Future [Updated]

During the press conference, the reporters in attendance bore witness to a potentially juicy tidbit dropped by Avengers and Iron Man star, Robert Downey Jr. As stated by Cinema Blend :

That’s right– according to Downey Jr., they’re shooting another scene from The Avengers tonight, and “I’m not joking.” He got the final word at the press conference, so there was no time to get clarification or figure out what on earth kind of scene they could be shooting for a movie that opens in three weeks.

UPDATE: The Playlist has further confirmed that this secret scene will shoot, through their conversations with actor Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner / Hulk):

“We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, ‘Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.’ ” Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the “The Avengers” when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, “Yeah. So I’m like, ‘All right, when are we doing that?’ Today after we’re done.”

Assuming that this isn’t just RDJ being…well, RDJ, the most likely scenarios would be that A) They are filming a new post-credits “Button Scene” meant to foreshadow the next big arc in the Marvel Movie Universe. B) That there is some kind of scene in the movie itself that they wanted to keep under wraps (possibly a fan-stirring cameo of some sort?). If fans remember correctly, two Marvel lead-in films – The Incredible Hulk and Captain America - had secret “button” scenes featuring some kind of juicy surprise. The problem in both cases was that Internet hounds were onto the surprise way before those respective films (and Thor, and Iron Man 1&2) reached theaters.

Marvel may have learned from past mistakes – trusting us shifty blogger types – and could have kept this secret scene out of the premiere screening, where it would have absolutely been blasted all over the Internet. As things stand, we’ll let you guys discuss and debate what this extra scene could be.

The Avengers hits (U.S.) theaters on May 4, 2012.

  1. I was wondering why RDJ was rocking a Tony Stark type beard at the premiere last night! I really hope Hercules gets introduced in Thor 2 and they go with Winter Soldier for Cap 2. So much nerd fodder, I hope “Man of Steel” is the beginning of DC’s process to bring their universe together. Anyone know of any rumors? They would probably leak those at Comic Con though…

    • I’ve been totally dismissing and desregarding Hercules as an Avenger, but that is a cool idea. Asgardians and Olympians clashing with each other in a marvel movie. Very Interesting.

  2. I bet its a space scene. You see someone flying away from the camera. As the camera pans you see the shiny gold helmet with the red star. Quick cut … Gold. As it [ans away you see its a gold glove. Further pan … red, blue, purple gems. Further pan … A man sitting with his head down. Further pan … he’s sitting on a thrown of sorts. The man lifts his head and the man looks up with a smile. (Thanos). end scene.

    • Why would they need the current cast for that scene?

    • I hate misspelling. Thrown – throne, [ans=pans,

    • It also sounds very CGI heavy, and the movie is coming out in 2 weeks…

      • ^Exactly!

    • No offense to Advocate, but his scene sounds really over-the-top and clumsy for a post-credits button. The buttons have typically been more of a subtle tone, hints as to what’s coming up next. The scene proposed would be a huge reveal of stuff they’d want to keep held back. I doubt the rough outline is even done for A2, much less all the movies that will come before that (Cap 2, Thor 2, IM 3, Hulk 2, etc)

  3. Well, I’m glad to hear that The Amazing Spiderman appears to be good (the unfinished version, that is)!

  4. My theories on how Marvel will introduce T’challa AKA black panther in the sequel movies and finally introduce him in Avengers 2

    http://comicbookrants.wordpress.com/2012/04/08/avengers-vs-x-men-from-battleground-part-2/

  5. Black Panthen will make cameos during Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and other movies before Avengers 2 and then will finally get introduced in Avengers 2

I have heard rumors about Wonder Man being a part of Iron Man 3. The man that tony stark destroys and who Brain Patterns were used by Ultron to create Vision

Then They are planning a Asgardian-Olympian war in Thor 2 that means Hercules being introduced in thor 2

Also Falcon is wanted to be in Captain America 2 no word right now about Winter Soldier

There was a Cameo by Thanos in Avengers premier two days back :)

    • talk about your list of highly improbable and outlandish rumors.

    • I actually kind of like the idea of having Wonder Man in one of the movies. Maybe have him in the next Avengers movie and do a take on the Revengers story line.

      • The problem with introducing Wonder Man isn’t the character per se but the baggage he brings along just to have a brain pattern to replicate. This plot line could be easily simplified to by using another brain pattern like Pym himself. Now we can get back to the whole movie being about the creation of Ultron and Vision. ;)

    • Wow… just, wow.
Well, you sound pretty sure of yourself, so I’ll believe you ;).

Seriously now, I HIGHLY doubt ANY of that will actually happen.

  6. Hey Kofi, according to Norse mythology, that “Oden” should probably be “Odin”… Just tryin’ to help out.

  7. Oh, and it should say “How many period flashbacks to include”, instead of “How much”

    • THanks Jimmy,

That list is actually copied directly from Collider – but I’ll fix the errors nonetheless ;-)

  8. SPOILER

    SERIOUSLY SPOILER

No mention that the aliens are the Chitauri? Several places have reported this…

  9. It’s probably one of those after credit scenes leading into the next film, probably for Iron-Man 3 since it starts filming in a few weeks.

    • The last minute secret scene I mean…

      • Nah, at the premier of The Avengers they already had a “huge” extra scene after the credits – several people who have seen the movie are saying it’s massive.
So I doubt they’ll mess around with that.

  10. enough with the SPOILERS already… lets wait and see the film

  11. everything sounds great except the part about no plans for an incredible hulk film!!!! ive been wating for a hulk sequel ever since ang lees hulk came out even though i didnt really like it. everyone else is getting a sequel, GIVE HULK ONE!!!

    • There was a sequel to Ang Lees Hulk. It starred Ed Norton. You are kidding, right?

      • uhhh ang lees hulk and ed nortons hulk are not related at all. You are kidding, right?

        • well now, this is a slippery slope ain’t it? i’m ov the mind-set that it is a sequel re-boot. others say it’s a straight up re-boot. there is an article i read, either at imdb, or wikipedia, that talks about how norton didn’t want to play “sloppy seconds”, so he re-worked so much of the script, and even got writing credits on some of the promo posters, but the writers guild refused to give him any credit, and blah blah blah, but, it does pick up with banner is south america, where they left him in lee’s Hulk. the opening montage did show his origins as being different than lee’s film, more akin to the bill bixby version, with him being in the chair and the cross-hairs over his face. call it a re-sequel-boot. i think they share enough to be able to watch them together, but that’s just me.
(in my best Bill Lumbergh voice…ahem…) If someone could go ahead and put together a good shot of all the film hulks together for a little side-by-side look, that would be great, and don’t forget we’re using the new cover sheets for the TPS reports, m’kay? greeaat.

          • Since you asked, no it’s not a slippery slope. Ang Lee’s “The Hulk” was a Universal production, this was before Marvel Studios existed, and Marvel was involved with their superhero film properties in a licensing role as Marvel Entertainment…not really part of actual film production. “Incredible Hulk” isn’t a sequel to “The Hulk,” it’s an independent production not related to the previous film.

There are some similar bits in each film, but that’s because they are derived from the same sources (Hulk comics). Norton mucked around with the script because, yes, he didn’t want it to be too similar to the previous film, and he also knew precisely what he wanted to do with Banner’s character, but this isn’t indicative of it being a sequel.

Basically “The Hulk” isn’t part of Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while it’s enjoyable and watchable on its own, it doesn’t quite “count” in the sense that Incredible Hulk, Captain America, etc. count.

          • Nope.
The Incredible Hulk was a full-on reboot of the old Hulk movie.

Hulk (2003) was created by Universal, and then when Marvel Studios got the rights back, they made TIH to be part of the MCU.

            • +1

              • Whether it was a sequel or not, I’d like to think that “The Incredible Hulk” should set the example for future superhero movies. Just give us a recap of the origin story during the opening credits, so we don’t have to wate time with a brand new origin story every time we get a new actor or director for the characte, like we did with Batman, and will now do with Spider-man and Superman. We know the origin, already – move on!

    • just because there are no plans right now, doesnt mean it’s never going to happen, but i agree, that doesn’t sound promising

    • I completely agree!! I wanna see Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader. It would also be cool if they brought back Red Skull at some point in the MCU and maybe have a variation of The Masters of Evil as villains in another Avengers film.. just a thought :) but I can’t wait to see The Avengers!

      • that is an awesome idea!!

as much as the solo films did for introducing the heroes, they also did a fair amount of character building and introducing for the villains.

they should do like a villain team up sort of movie too!

Red Skull + Loki = crazy asgardian nazi army….don’t mess.

    • for me, i am really okay with hulk just being in avengers movies.

they have trouble having audiences really get into the hulk because it has been done so many times (via television and film)

perhaps have a hulk focused avengers movie where the villain is the leader so you get to see more of banner.

but really the solo films are for introducing / forming character arcs and such, and while banner has a cool sort of “man on the run” story, really all i wanna see hulk do is SMASH. i think this is best achieved through his capacity as the tank on an avengers team/film.

  12. Im supposed to see The Avengers this saturday in New York at a special early screening as a reward for following the movies news on facebook. I wonder, will the new scene be attached to the screening im seeing saturday? or will i have to wait to see it again in May(which i will)?

    • Probably May, less then a 2 day turn around?

      • yea, its probably a bit of a stretch to hope for, but stranger things have happened. Doesnt make me any less psyched to see it saturday 3 weeks early tho.

  13. I am hoping it is a wakanda tease to lead us to the man, Black mickeyficken Panther baby!

    • I think its also Black Panther in the teaser…africa would be an ideal place to have Avengers 2…add in Ultron and you have a hell of a movie.

      • Which teaser are you talking about? I don’t remember seeing anyone that could’ve been T’Challa the teasers.

  14. Do NOT wanna ruin this for anyone but the cameo scene is Spider-man stopping by to help out with the clean up of sorts. The end scene surprise for the movie has already been filmed… just kept out of the premier. This scene is another scene. Spidey tells them to take care of the big threats he’ll go around and help rescue/save the people. You’ve been warned.

    • Too bad Fox owns the rights to Spidey so he would not appear in a Marvel production. Troll fail. Goodbye.

      • Sony owns Spidey not Fox…just sayin’.

        • Right, Fox owns FF. However, my point remains valid.

    • [facepalm]

      • [facepalm] indeed haha

  15. The secret scene was a joke, Josh Whedon said so himself.

  16. I hope it’s Spider-Man that would be so EPIC!!!

    • Either spider-man or black panther would make me happy. For latter I’ll finally have cool costume for Halloween .

    • No, cuz he’s owned by another company.

    • Spiderman is owned by another company so that wont happen.

  17. I’ve actually heard from a fairly reliable source that Marvel (at least at some point, past or present), was very, very close to obtaining the cinematic film rights back to Fantastic Four. Not certain how this is fairing. Could you imagine it? A film in the MCU where Reed Richards, Hank Pym and Tony Stark are all in a room discussing the negative zone or something? That’d be awesome, not to mention the possibility of a Hulk vs, Thing SlugFest! As for Spiderman, if I had to hazard a guess, I’d rationalize that IF this new Spiderman film does poorly at the box office, Marvel would probably manage to obtain Spidey’s cinematic film rights back almost immediately. That is, IF the film does poor box office. Just a thought.

    • This is sadly a fairly old rumor and goes hand in hand with Fox claiming it is close to putting a FF reboot into production, complete with a fully CG Thing.

And I am hoping that this Spider-man reboot will not interest the general public because most will see it as nothing special and hence not flock to it (similar to XMFC but of course they are now moving forward with an XMFC2 so I guess it did well enough).

      • ASM looks to be one of the top movies this year IMO Its story driven & brings the SpiderMan banter we all adore. I cld see this easily being one of the most praised movies of the summer.

I still loathe the costume design lol

        • I agree with Ignur. Although the costume could have been better, Webb appears to have nailed Spider-Man down. It won’t outgrow Batman or Avengers IMO, but I think it will be a very solid movie. Also, even if it wasn’t promising, people would still flock to see it, because of name recognition & the amount of kids that would see it.

        • Yes it could go the other way but I’m personally hoping it falls flat simply because I’m pro having him back in Marvel’s hands.

It might get a lot of negative buzz once word catches on this is not a sequel to the other SM trilogy and doesn’t have Maguire in it. We shall have to wait and see.

and yes, I also hate the professionally designed Hollywood outfit and the human faced Lizard.

  18. Maybe they are re-filming the first two acts b/c of all the complaints lol

As faras Thor 2, No Jane. Her character was poorly developed. Keep Thir in the nine realms and have The Echantress & Sif as love intrest who Thor turns down through out the course of the film. Portmans character would have a better presence by not being in the film and seeing Thor express through words&actions how much he cares for her.

    • Jane Foster isn’t in Avengers precisely because there’s already a lot going on, and Whedon said a love interest that hasn’t fully developed didn’t have room in a plot as crowded as this one.

      • I was talking about excluding Jane from Thor 2.

        • I know. Since that isn’t happening, and she *is* excluded from Avengers, I was just redirecting a bit.

    • There have only been two (minor) complains Ignur, I wouldn’t call that “all the complains” ;)

      • Sah Joke sir lol

but i dont really trust these intial screenings (for better or worse) as some1 had said both GL & Superman Returns recieved overwhelming positive non-reviews. Not like it wld stop me from seeing it.

        • I know you made a joke…
Just wanted to point out “all the complaints” are actually jsut two so far – for those who haven’t heard about the early reactions.

Anywho, I can’t remember GL getting positive reviews (from critics and celebs) – I know it received some good buzz from the regular audience members and a few fans, but as far as the professionals (in the industry) go: they pretty much hated it from the start…

  19. The ‘Secret Scene’ at the end of this movie might be….after the dust settles….The Avengers are suddenly joined…by another superhero…who swings by…on a web !!!

    • nope.

    • Does no one understand that Spidey will NOT show up in Marvel’s universe unless/until Marvel secures the rights back from Sony?

      • Lots of us understand it, but it’s brought up so many times by people who somehow haven’t heard…that we with the knowledge got sick of pointing it out and just stopped responding.

      • I am laughing with all the Spiderman comments. I think one person with 6 accounts is just f’ing with everyone at this point lol.

  20. The end scene might be something dealing with more ‘galactic’ galaxy based characters and events, including perhaps Thanos, Guardians of the galaxy and other space based Marvel properties. I’d like to think that Ironman 3 will perhaps hint at Black Panther and maybe Namor the Submariner. Those characters would aid an Avengers sequel to easing any additional characters into the MCU for a smooth fit.

  21. LOVING what I’m hearing from Kevin Feige (and if they DON’T get Joss back for TA2, then I will kill the man who made the choice to fire him), but I’m quite sad to hear that there aren’t new plans for a sequel to TIH :( – it was a good movie and deserving of a sequel (that deals with the Leader and maybe, Red Hulk).
Still, someone mentioned earlier that just because they don’t have plans at the moment, doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen.

As for the extra scene, I doubt it’s anything BIG (VFX would take too long), and since the movie already has an apparent “huge” after-credit scene, I can’t see why they’d replace it with some dialog between Banner and Stark.
It might be another scene to be included in the movie? But then, why do that? The movie is already being screened to people, and the official release in in less than 2 weeks (3 for the US).
Doesn’t make sense at all IMO.

  22. I have a hunch they’ll either introduce :
1.) Thanos with his Infinity Gauntlet
2.) Ant Man and Janet Van Dyne (the Wasp)
    3.) Black Panther (perhaps)
    4.) Ultron (via CGI)

  23. Man , am I ever gonna get another Hulk movie? It pisses me off because they kept him under wraps for the longest time to build anticipation for him and now we’ve got these movies that came out at least three years after TIH which are already getting sequels. I wanna see the leader

  24. It just dawned on me: did anyone REALLY say it was another scene for ‘The Avengers’?
As far as I know, RDJ only said they’re shooting another scene – he didn’t say for what movie…
And if it was indeed for The Avengers, maybe it’s another short-film? (To be included on the DVD or something)

  25. I’d like to see the next Avengers movie introduce The Vision…. he’s the Avengers’ equivalent to what Jonn Jonnz (The Martian Manhunter) is to the Justice League . I hope they’ll introduce him .

    • i think it would be really cool if they used Jarvis to evolve into ultron/vision. It just seems like it would be a good fit and the best way to not have to give a lot of a back story

    • I’m on this page with you. The Vision has always been one of my favorite Avengers and his power set sets him apart from the rest of them. As mentioned above, his character links to quite a few others. As much as I would like to see Pym and the Wasp (though Yellowjacket has always been my favorite of Pym’s forms), Pym was almost always relegated to doing the lab work (over time) and the Wasp was often too busy designing her next costume…

Scarlet Witch is a cool character and, with Quicksilver, we have the Inhuman link but, unless Marvel intends to work along with the Kree at some point, it seems rather like a lot a rewriting (not to mention the link with Magneto, which seems out of reach).

Vision links Ultron and Wonderman and Pym could be a background character eventually worked in (plus the Grim Reaper). If Ultron makes a play for Wakandan vibranium, we link Panther. Overall, I would love to see Ultron but not really without the Vision around.

  26. Personally, I think the added scene will be Zach Galifianakis stumbling into a room looks around and says “What the f…?!”

    Cut to Black.

    • WOuld be funnier if it was Deadpool.
And before anyone starts yelling at me I KNOW Marvel doesn’t own the rights to Deadpool.

  27. Wow any real Avenger Fans out there, I’d put Money on the extra scene being a Poker scene with them all sitting around playing poker when there is a knock at the door and Fury shows up and tell Cap an old friend is back and shows him a blurry picture of Winter Soldier, that said its already also been stated that Cap 2 will pick up right after Avengers. This would make more sense since it wouldnt require any heavy CGI, Just the actors.

  28. I think I might go dressed as Coulson.

  29. I love the Spiderman love but it aint happening folks.

If they are indeed filming a new scene I think it will simply be dialogue. I am not sure what they are going for if they already have a button scene post credits. Why introduce Thanos or another super villian like this when they will surely do it in the button scene?

It spells cameo. I could guess till I am blue in the face but Black Panther, Hank Pym, or Wasp would be my top 3.
