One-eyed, no-nonsense S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will have his hands full with a whole crew of Marvel super-powered types in next year’s eagerly anticipated The Avengers – and as it turns out, he won’t be doing the job all by himself.

Jackson has revealed that Fury will have a female sidekick, an all new character in Joss Whedon’s Avengers movie. Marvel execs might not be pleased with the actor for dropping that tidbit, but he’s already signed a nine-picture deal with the studio and besides – he is SLJ, after all. 😉

[Mild SPOILERS Ahead]

A guest last night on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jackson mentioned that he would be filming his parts (or rather, brief cameos) for both Thor and Captain America over the next couple of months before production on The Avengers gets underway this spring. As Jackson put it, Fury will essentially act as a “connective tissue” that links this summer’s Marvel character solo outings to Whedon’s unifying ensemble piece – though it’s not clear whether the S.H.I.E.L.D head will show up in the actual films or in a post-credits scene, a la Iron Man.

[End SPOILERS Alert]

On the topic of Avengers in particular, Jackson mentioned that he would be screen testing with around half a dozen actresses or so (he mentioned no specific names) who Jackson says are vying to play “this new character that’s like my sidekick, she’s with me all the time.”

To see more, and to hear Jackson talk briefly about his involvement in HBO’s The Sunset Limited, watch the clip from his interview with Fallon below:

Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Natalie Rushman (a.k.a. Black Widow) was sort of an aid to Fury in Iron Man 2, but she’s clearly destined for bigger and better things in The Avengers – not to mention, a potential solo movie for the character. There’s been early speculation that Fury’s aide could be Janet van Dyne (a.k.a. The Wasp), but there’s nothing solid to back that idea for now.

Heat Vision is listing four actresses as possible contenders who will test on Friday for the role: Jessica Lucas (Melrose Place), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World), and Morena Baccarin (V).

Baccarin seems like a frontrunner, simply because she’s worked with Whedon before on his short-lived cult sci-fi series Firefly and its spin-off feature film, Serenity – not to mention, the actress was long rumored to be Whedon’s top choice to play Wonder Woman back when he was onboard to helm that comic book adaptation. So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them collaborate again on The Avengers.

What are your thoughts on all this? Who do you want to see play Nick Fury’s sidekick?

Thor arrives in theaters this year on May 6th, followed by Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22nd.

The Avengers will make their way into theaters on May 4th, 2012.

  1. Morena Baccarin…yes please 😀

    • yeee

  2. Morena Baccarin for Maria Hill or Janet Van Dyne

  3. They might be going with ultimate version of Wasp because Latino Review reporter tweeted that they’re looking at white and asian girls for the “administrative” job, not the side-kick that Samuel L Jackson is talking about.

  4. they should cast Jessica Lucas to play Monica Lynne. if they introduce the character Monica Lynne that can open doors for a Black Panther movie.

  5. The female sidekick will be probably be played by one of the following rising young actresses:

Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen, Ellen Page, Emma Roberts, Jessica Szohr, Evan Rachel Wood.

I hope this movie will include Ant-Man and Wasp as well as some of the following villains:

Baron Zemo, Collector, Count Nefaria, Egghead, Grandmaster, Graviton, Grim Reaper, Immortus, Kang, Korvac, Legion of the Unliving, Lethal Legion, Loki, Master Pandemonium, Masters of Evil, Morgan le Fay, Nebula, Space Phantom. Super-Adaptoid, Supreme Intelligence, Squadron Sinister, Taskmaster, Thanos, Ultron, Zodiac.

    • Lauren, what is it with the list of names in Alphabetical order? This isnt the only post you have done this on. Are you really wanting to see all these people in the movie (it’ll never happen) or are you just a super fan? Im for a fan who knows their comic history but I am not sure that is whats going on here. Slightly weird.

    • Hopefully this movie will NOT include:

Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen, Ellen Page, Emma Roberts, Jessica Szohr, Evan Rachel Wood.

      • dude ellen page is not THAT bad of an actress, compared too everyone else, shes the best

        • John, you´re right. I like how she portrayed Shadowcat in X3. That was actually the best about that movie… But Miley Cyrus?! Come on…

          • LOL! I also don’t think Ellen Page is a horrible actress, especially compared to others in her age group. But I don’t want to see her in this movie.

    • I would be extremely upset if half of these actresses were even considered for a role in the film. I mean, Miley Cyrus, are you kidding me? No way! I hope you never get a job as a casting director.

      • lol , I second that and half of the villian on her list are stooges

        • Agreed. We need an awesome villain because they’ll be going up against the Avengers!!! Gah, I’m so excited for this movie!

    • So Lauren, Rajesh, Deborah, or whatever your name is…

There are a few potential reason for these ridiculous lists you’re posting

But why do you post under a different name every time? Yeesh.

      • I was wondering the same thing…

  6. She could be the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine

  7. I will say Morena definatly has the look of Wasp.

    • I agree but she also looks identical to Maria Hill

      • Or that Daisy chick from Secret War… Or every other brunette female Marvel character…

  8. No…. MFSLJ!!! Get it right! – Stark

  9. Morena Baccarin btw… – Stark

  10. My money is on agent 13, Sharon Carter.

  11. Does anyone think his sidekick could be Betty Ross? I am just thinking back to the animated Avengers movie. I do not know if sidekick is the right word but she was always around helping out Nick and the rest of SHIELD.

  12. sharon carter obvi

    • Peggy Carter and Sharon Carter going to be played by the same actress cause both of them ment to look-a-like

      • Agent 13 will be in one of the Marvel Movies but I see it her being introduced in Cap 2

  13. for real its gotta be caps old flame’s grand daughter who he falls for in the present time

  14. I think it should be Eliza Dushku as The Wasp

  15. Spider Woman?

  16. Would be cool if it were Sharon Carter.

        • Damn, doesn´t work either. Vic, what´s wrong here? My links always worked here…

            • We don’t use image tags here, Scape. Just paste in the regular http link.

              • Got it. I thought tinypic knew what I wanted to post. My bad…

                • Thank you! Faux casting is super fun! I totally dig Stephen Lang as Cable – that was one of my favorite picks in my X-Men list. I’m doing either Voltron or Justice League next to be sure to stop by my blog again. :)

  17. Carol Danvers should pop up somewhere too. Of course that would lead to a Captain Marvel subplot. That would require explaining the Kree. Then Rogue could steal her powers and memory, and then the Brood could turn her into Binary, then she could…

Okay, that’s too many movies right there.

  18. Thank GOD that they tossed Eva Longoria from the casting choices!!!

I must be the only guy in America that just can’t STAND Longoria.

    • dude im with you

      • I’m Longoria neutral but I didn’t want to see her in this movie.

  19. My money’s on Sharon Carter. But I’d kill to see Carol Danvers make it into one of these Marvel movies.

  20. Longoria is to acting skills what the White Castle slider is to a 2-inch thick Porterhouse steak

  21. Could be Maria Hill as well. She’s a big name in comics now.

    • That was the first thing that popped into my head too. I doubt it will be Van Dyne. The Ant-Man film isn’t past the script stage yet and I don’t think they’d cast that character before she was ready to be cast in the follow up film.
Or they could start casting characters to move the Edgar Wright film along by establishing characters people will want to see more of.

  22. morena baccarrin with short hair would look just like Maria HIll

    • Actually, she looks just like the Ultimates version of Wasp…. Google a pic…

      • Prior to her being

        eaten by the Blob.

  23. My guess is that the character is Maria Hill.

    • no doubt probably rite on the Maria Hill comment but I wud also luv to see her as Wasp. Also if Nathan Fillion were cast as Antman later on it wud be truly epic for nerds everywhere

      • OMG seriously if they did a semi-Firefly reunion in Avengers I would die!! Joss Whedon + comic book movie = my kind of heaven.

  24. Whooo wee! she has my vote!

  25. yo if they put ms.marvel wow this movie is going to be big

  26. Mary Elizabeth Winstead please!!!

  27. As a lifelong Marvel Universe reader and Avengers fan I cannot fathom Nick Fury’s “sidekick” being anyone other than Maria Hill. Wasp was not his sidekick and they shouldnt re-write the comics for box office receipts… I am already beside myself with all of the changes they made to Thor! Donald Blake is a crippled doctor and Jane Foster is a nurse – not a nuclear physicist!!!!!

Im sorry – I had to get that off my chest :-)

  28. Mary Elizabeth Winstead? Ha! No way!
