Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner Discuss ‘The Avengers’

Fans are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of a second domestic trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers. To help pass the time, the studio has released a couple of international promos (dubbed in German and Russian) with tiny morsals of new footage, along with the “exciting” news that writer/director Joss Whedon’s superhero teamup flick will be post-converted to 3D.

While we don’t have any new Avengers footage to show you today, we do have some interesting quotes from co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner, touching on topics like how the film is a perfect metaphor for the United States – and how it makes a movie series like the Mission: Impossible franchise seem realistic (in comparison).

Ruffalo was speaking recently with The Wall Street Journal about his work as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk in The Avengers when he started to muse philosophically about the film – as you’ll note in the following Ruffalo quotes:

“[In 'The Avengers' you] have all these disparate egos, superheroes in this and that, and they refuse to give up some of their positions in order to make a more perfect union and to join the team. That’s really what the whole movie is about: subjugating your own best interest momentarily to further that of the whole. I didn’t know it a year ago that it was going to speak to so many of the issues we’re having here in the United States and throughout the world, the same kind of theme.

“These [comic book] movies reach a lot of people, they’re our modern mythology. I think a lot of the beliefs I have and cherish were fostered by the decency of our superheroes, and what they were about and what they were fighting for.”

Many an Avengers comic book storyline (okay, basically every one) has taken advantage of the team’s various players and their oft-clashing personalities/views to create some thoughtful, but still fun conflicts – especially between characters like Iron Man and Captain America – over how best to address different global issues and world-threatening enemies they are forced to confront. In that sense, it sounds like Ruffalo’s comments are right on the money (as should also be true for Whedon’s movie).

A look at the crew inside Avengers Headquarters

The Avengers assembled at their headquarters.

Meanwhile, Renner (who is playing Clint Barton/Hawkeye) was interviewed by Get Hampshire recently when he was asked to compare his experience working on The Avengers with that of his recently-released blockbuster hit, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Here’s what the actor had to say:

“‘Mission’ was a massive movie [and] then ‘The Avengers’ came round, and that’s a huge movie. There are all these superheroes in it, passing a baton between superheroes There’s a lot of fighting! But that should be a big, fun movie. It’s a whole other world. We’re dealing with other worlds, and other things like Thor and all.

“‘Mission’ has got that more, I’m not going to say it’s the most grounded movie, but it’s got a sense of realism to it. We’re climbing that building. We’re doing these things. The circumstances might be fantasy but you know we’re doing real s**t. And when it comes to The Avengers that’s a bit more fantasy.”

On that note: most fans have pretty solid theories about what “other worlds” Renner is talking about here, as well as what extraterrestrial creatures will probably pop up in The Avengers. That the actor also emphasizes the idea of fantasy (not sci-fi) elements being featured heavily in the film seems to tie-in with certain rumors concerning secret villains, but maybe that’s just us reading too much between the lines…

The Avengers will hit theaters in the U.S. on May 4th, 2012.

  1. Wow. That’s a good one. Modern allegory. I like you Mark Ruffalo, but that’s just too much! It’s a money grab! Albeit, hopefully an entertaining one…

  2. What is that on the bottom right? At first I thought it was a spear or something, but it kinda looks like a gun or some other type of weapon…

    • actually its the weapon we see loki with at the begining of the trailer for ‘the avegners’ so he gets his hands on it or they confiscated it from him.

    • think it’s a weapon or something

    • It’s Loki’s staff: he had one in ‘Thor’ as well, but in an interview with Tom Hiddleston, he was asked what weapons he would have in the movie, and Hiddleston replied that he still has the staff (from ‘Thor’), but that in The Avengers, it’s a more “upgraded” version
Now, my theory is… that the staff is “upgraded” with one of the infinity gems… (think about it, it’s quite plausible IMO – the gem even looks like an infinity gem…)

      • The mind gem is the blue one. I wonder what that could bring.

        • I’m pretty sure the blue one is the soul gem? (I’m gonna have to look that one up and get back to you though)

          • Blue: mind
            Green: soul
            Red: power
            Orange: time
            Yellow: reality
            Purple: space

      • When he said the staff was upgraded, he wasn’t saying it’s the same staff with more power added, he just means Loki is using a staff again, and this one has more capabilities.

Also, I don’t think it’s using an infinity gem at all, it just seems too big & chunky, and they’ve already shown that the gems are small like in the comics.

        • Yeah that staff looks nothing (from my limited memory) like the one in Thor.

          I think its a new weapon/staff.

        • Firstly: it could very well be the same staff (Loki is a master of magic, he could easily change the form of the staff…). Plus, where would he get another one? (Just pop over to Svartalfheim and get some of the dark elves to make him a new one? riiiiiight ;) )

Secondly: we never saw the Infinity Gauntlet on an actual person (so we don’t really know how big the glove actually is) — it could very well be larger than the comics-version (keep in mind, it is meant to be able to fit Thanos…). Also, in that picture, the staff is quite close, so the gem might seem huge in relation to the rest of the picture.

Just theories… I’m not saying you’re wrong or I’m right, but I’m just speculating and drawing conclusions based on the stuff I know.
(I’m sure you can respect and understand that.)

          • “Firstly: it could very well be the same staff (Loki is a master of magic, he could easily change the form of the staff…). Plus, where would he get another one? (Just pop over to Svartalfheim and get some of the dark elves to make him a new one? riiiiiight ;) )”

So its the same staff it just looks completely different and your take on it is he made it look different just cause. Even if he didn’t have it at the end of Thor. I believe (again limited memory) he had the and was fighting Thor with the Odin staff.

Why couldn’t he have a new staff made by the Dark Elves? Per the end of Thor it appears he has his hands on the Cosmic Cube which would allow him travel to wherever he wants within the ‘realms’ and possibly beyond.

With the Infinity Gauntlet doesn’t it ‘fit’ to the user? I remember Nebula using it and didn’t Adam wear it also along with a few others? That is taxing my memory so its just a thought.

The “Thor” Infinity Gauntlet appears to have a larger (aqua/blue) center gem, http://www.10mfh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/thor-infinity-gauntlet.jpg which could match the one in the new staff above.

            • Like I said… just theories…

I’ll have to concede on the whole staff thing (Loki changing the shape of it “just ’cause” is a pretty stupid reason – i’ll grant you that, but I still don’t think he just goes along and gets some elves to make him a new one — that’s a little ~thin~ as well IMO.) Hopefully they’ll have an explanation for the staff in the movie…

As for the glove, yes it does fit the wearer when applied, but when it isn’t on someone’s hand, it’s quite big in most of the comics I’ve read (in the latest Avengers comics, Iron Man held the gauntlet and it seemed quite big, but when he put it on, it fit his arm/hand much better). Also, if the gauntlet isn’t a little too big when not on someone’s hand, how could anyone with large hands (like Thanos) even possibly get the thing on in the first place? –That said, the glove is much bigger when not on someone’s hand, IMO.

              • All I can see now is Thanos sliding it over his thumb. :D

              • I don’t know where he gets his new staff, it could be from anywhere since he goes on a journey across the universe between the end of Thor and the start of Avengers. I *do* know that it’s not Gungnir in a different form, since Odin is still alive, is still the king of Asgard, and Gungnir belongs to whoever is ruling the realm. Loki couldn’t have changed the spear with his magic, the spear is far beyond his power, forged long before his birth and unchangeable.

  3. I just want trailer number 2 (with more HULK!). This is the movie I am most excited for this year. Nolan has proven himself with the Batman films so that one falls to a close 2nd. The Avengers should be a very fun ride.

  4. Man, Ruffalo comes off as such a pretension a-hole sometimes ;) (but that last paragraph – where he praises comic book movies – was quite nice IMO – he really seems to understand what they’re about and how important they are to some people)

I’m also very intrigued to why Renner is saying The Avengers is more of a “fantasy”: from the trailer, I would have guessed that The Avengers was going to be more sci-fi-action than fantasy-action…
This makes me think that the 9 realms will play a WAY bigger role in the movie than I had anticipated at first.
OR, maybe he just used a poor choice of words ;)

But I’m with Alpine, at this point, all I want is TRAILER 2! (With at least 30 seconds of new footage please :D )

    • I believe he misspoke. We will know soon enough my friend….May can’t get here fast enough.

    • “This makes me think that the 9 realms will play a WAY bigger role in the movie than I had anticipated at first.”

Well considering the 9 realms are made up of the universe as a whole (think 9 or more hopefully different galaxies) it should. This plays great with them (Asgardians) being aliens.

It will be easier to say well you accepted these (Asgardians) aliens, whats wrong with Skrulls/Badoon/Celestials/Kree etc.

Thor (movie) created the means in which these various races from the various galaxies can move between/to Earth.

At least enough to whet ‘our’ appetites.

  5. I think mark ruffalo will make a ( incredible ) hulk, even though i enjoyed norton’s version on the hulk i didn’t see him as bruce banner or a scientist working in a white lab coat.I see that with ruffalo,he reminds me of a scientist and he brings back memories of bill bixby,i know people wanted norton back but i think ruffalo will knock it out the park with this one and pretty soon we’ll get that Hulk 3 what fans want….HULK SMASH 2014

  6. Ok really looking forward to seeing more hulk, but i want to know is if they(marvel) are going to use the leader who was created in the incredible hulk film,or are they just going to leave that continuity dead? i want to see what has become of samuel stern.

    • I’ve been saying this all along, with how much planning they’ve put into all these films, I’d be shocked to see such a big loose end left unanswered.

  7. and i hope we get a Hulk 3.

    • You probably mean Hulk 2?
      (How can you have Hulk 3 without a Hulk 2 ;) )

      • i say they shouldn’t even number them. call the next one “the return of the incredible hulk”, or something along those lines. i still subscribe to the theory that TIH is a re-booted sequel to hulk. even though hulk came out way before the whole MCU thing started, TIH picks up where hulk left off; banner in south america, gen. ross looking for him, lou ferrigno still the security guard at the university.

        • For those who payed close attention to the start of the movie (the montage), will know that ‘The Incredible Hulk’ (2008) was a reboot. (Not a remake and not a sequel – a full-on reboot).

  8. Once again another Actor(s) involved with a Disney/Marvel Studios project has expressed His/Her opinion(s)

Unlike the other Marvel Character projects made by other studios…
There’s seems to be less review about their comments than those made by Directors, Actors involved in Disney /Marvel projects. Why that is…? I don’t know..maybe the public has accepted the fact the other Studios don’t hold continuity and History as important as Disney /Marvel does..
That being said…Ruff and Renn make their statements and people will review it…just as Hiddleston, Hemsworth, Evans, Jackson..etc..etc..will make their own.

The proof is in the pudding. But If any Director,Actor makes a statement about the project that at any minute interger be thought as “Negative…
Then you gotta take a step back and say..Whoa, wait a min…what did They say….?

You can agree or disagree..but if you do disagree..you really should look into how Corporations are run. Don’t get to far off where you forget this is still a business….

    • you really need to get a grasp on the english language. syntax, sentence structure. i dont know if i agree or disagree with your post as i really have no clue as to what you are trying to say. hell, maybe i’ve been in KY too long and i’ve lost too many iq points. does anyone else have a clue as to what he’s is trying to say? I am not the grammar police, but dude, make a clear point, and stop using quotation marks…yer doin’ it wrong!

      • I didn’t know what he was getting at either.

      • I don’t get it either.

      • Honestly… I had a bit of trouble understanding all that myself…
(Sorry Tra8, I honestly mean no disrespect, but it is a little confusing sometimes)

    • Proof of what is in the pudding? And what does interger mean?

  9. I want this movie to make gobs and gobs of cash! Just a sh*tload of dollars! I want Wheddon to have everything Nolan has. Nolan was given complete freedom and we were blessed with Inception and now TDKR. God only knows what kind of insane awesomeness we’d get if Wheddon was given the same.

    • Definitely agree. Give Whedon creative control of a movie like this, awesomeness squared.

      • Well… he did write the movie, so I’d say he has quite a bit of creative control on this one.

  10. I think its going to be a great movie but I would have liked to see all the founding members in it. (i.e. AntMan and the Wasp)

  11. The most boring movie of 2012?

    • Doubt it ;)

    • I didn’t know we were talking about The Great Gatsby. :-D

  12. Dude..maybe you have been in KY..too long..
    I’m not at work..this is a blog…
    Get a grip!
I’m not at work constructing contracts..I didn’t know there were blog Police.I was in a Cab on Madison Ave buddy…life is a little faster here..I didn’t know Ms.Whalen was reading and grading blogs..

The point that seems to have completely flew over your KY head was in replying to the aforementioned banter about Ruffalo and Renner…How some of Renner’s comments can be taken or interpreted in a negative way. Renner called Mission and more …wait..
I’m not explaining somebody else’s post again….read it yourself. And if there was a Immigrant shot in your reply..My Passport is Blue with a Gold Eagle on it…and it says United States. So Blue Grass guy..Have a BIG Apple Pie!

    • i dont need to re-read the article posted. i know exactly what it said. what i said is YOUR comment makes absolutely no sense. NONE. if you think it did, i suggest you re-read it to yourself out loud. and god help anyone whose contracts you had a hand in creating. at no point in Sandy’s article did i get any impression that ruffalo or renner were being negative in any way about anything. renner only pointed out a difference in the “realities” of the 2 films, and i get his point. in MI:GP, all the action scenes, while pretty far-fetched, are more realistic than, say, a man turning into a huge green rage-beast, or Thor as an actual person. that’s what he is saying is more fantasy. i certainly didn’t read anything negative into what he was saying…I’m sure YOU did, as every time there is an article on SR about “The Avengers”, you always make negative comments about it, but mostly about Robert Downey jr. That is certainly your right as a “Blue with a Gold Eagle on it” passport carrying american. far as a “Immigrant shot”, what the hell are you talking about? did i call you an immagrant? did i say you weren’t from these parts? no, i did not.
“…keep manhattan just give me that countryside…”

    • Dude…
Screenrant isn’t a “blog”, it’s a legitimate movie news website (run by a staff of people/writers).
(A blog is usually run by a teenage girl who writes stuff about the type of “lip-gloss” she’s “so totally into” at the moment ;) )
There’s a BIIIIGGGG difference between some gal/guy’s blog, and an actual website, that’s visited by thousands of people daily.

      • lol @ lip-gloss!!!

      • It’s a blog site, even if it does have staff. I know you’re thinking of blogs as something teenage girls write about their favorite cupcake recipes, but that’s not the only type of blog. If you want an example of a blog site that fits what Screen Rant is, check out Ars Technica.

  13. Blue Grass just won’t let it go…
I’ll keep Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and da Bronx!
You can keep your Bromance with RDJ.
If you knew anything about the industry all the comments I’ve said about your Idol were true. There are other sites where the commentary about RDJ’s attitude wasn’t as kind as mine. Sorry not everyone’s in Love. It’s interpretations…

    It’s 2012 ….Peace and SOOUULLL!!!!

  14. For the record..Hemsworth, Evans, Hiddleston,Jackson have never made any comments to the Press corp that could be taken as negative to the project or the Studio. NEVER ONCE!
    Hell!
Disney/Marvel should hire Hiddleston as VP Public Relations. He’s GREAT! But not your boy…
In the NYC we call em like we see em! Your boy is either stupid or his publicist should be fired.
As I said this is a business.

    • So you’re saying that those people should at least make negative comments about the project or studio?

I’m not really getting what you’re trying to say. You should mind the ellipses and the words you use.

    • Sure, movie-making is a business, but in all respect, it’s a business that you don’t really seem to know much about…
WHY would the actor’s make statements/comments that could be seen in a negative way?
It’s part of their job description to “sell” the movie as much as they can (do you really think actors are supposed to go on talk shows and say “yeah, I have a new movie coming out… ‘is no big deal – not even that good… let’s talk about something else”? – No, it’s their job to star/act in a movie, and then help sell it to audiences worldwide) — and in all my life, I’ve never seen anyone sell anything with negative comments and statements (that just doesn’t make sense)

Also: at no point in this article did Renner or Ruffalo say anything negative about any of their upcoming (or already released) films — so I don’t even know where this is coming from to be quite honest…

      P.S. RDJ is awesome ;)

  15. i have tried googling robert downey jr negative avengers, and i don’t find anything. the only negatives are in the comments sections of whatever web-site had an interview with him. even the comicbookmovie.com site that mr. “life is a little faster here” NY refered me to only has negative comments from other haters (speaking of which tr8, you should really change your user name to h8, cause thats all you seem to do in here, imo) so i am still looking for this negative interview where rdj just craps all over his meal ticket, but i just don’t believe it exists.

“…go ahead, bite the big apple…don’t mind the maggots…”

  16. How old are you?
Do you have any world experience at all? Do you literally have to have someone say something negative before you figure them out? Does a Jewish person literally have to hear you say ‘anti semetic words. Before they can tell what your about.Do Blacks and Hispanics and Asians need you to wear a sign to say your a bigot….no. Not saying you are but somethings in Life don’t need a formal introduction.

Are you for real…Your boy makes statements that are self serving. I’m sorry if me and the other haters (As you say) see that.
Other People have read this lil thing going on and are wondering why am wasting my time trying to get someone to see something THEY DON’T WANT TO…

Tra8 is fine… won’t change it. That is my right isn’t it?
Me and all the rest of the haters ..who seem to only go after Nolan,Favure, and of course…your boy.

    Enough already..

  17. “How old are you?”

    44

“Do you have any world experience at all?”

    yes

” Do you literally have to have someone say something negative before you figure them out?”

yes, someone has to say something “negative” before i call them a negative person. i don’t simply make assumptions.

” Does a Jewish person literally have to hear you say ‘anti semetic words. Before they can tell what your about.Do Blacks and Hispanics and Asians need you to wear a sign to say your a bigot….no. Not saying you are but somethings in Life don’t need a formal introduction.”

i resent the implication that you think i am a bigot. i believe i can now qualify YOU as a negative person.

“Are you for real…Your boy makes statements that are self serving.”

    yes, i am for real
1.) he is not my “boy”. i have never met him, but he seems like he would be a pretty cool dude.
2.) again, i ask you where are these “negative, self-serving” statements you prattle on & on about? show me a link. a quote. SOMETHING! that’s all i have been asking for. you keep making allegations that rdj is dissing the avengers and joss whedon and who knows who else. you keep saying “the proof is in the pudding” i think you just like to throw that phrase around and really have no idea of it’s meaning, so, i refer you to urbandicitionary.com, which states -”A phrase that, when uttered, instantly identifies the speaker as being incredibly stupid and illiterate.
The original saying is “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”, basically meaning that something has to be experienced/utilized in order to prove how good it is.
This phrase got messed up by idiots who don’t quite understand what they are saying.”
    It couldn’t be more apropos.

” I’m sorry if me and the other haters (As you say) see that.”

    what others?

“Other People have read this lil thing going on and are wondering why am wasting my time trying to get someone to see something THEY DON’T WANT TO…”

what other people? what am i refusing to see? i have asked you for proof of your statements, yet all you can do is ramble on meaninglessly about whether i’m a bigot or rdj is “my boy”.

“Tra8 is fine… won’t change it. That is my right isn’t it?”

    sure, whatever floats your boat.

“Me and all the rest of the haters ..who seem to only go after Nolan,Favure, and of course…your boy.”

    there it is again.

    “Enough already..”

why? it’s so much fun to pick apart your silly statements

  18. Jeffro and Tr8 – I need both of you to let this go please and move on to other more movie related topics.

    Thank you,

    Paul Young
