This summer begins the true lead-in to next summer’s epic superhero movie event, The Avengers. Now that Thor and Captain America are almost upon us, and The Avengers is already in production, details regarding these Marvel movies are starting to get nailed down.

CinemaCon is happening right now, and our pal Ed Douglas from Coming Soon was on hand for the Disney panel, which focused on their takeover of Marvel Movie distribution next year. The panel included a few Avengers tidbits – including a look at concept art for Hawkeye’s (Jeremy Renner) Marvel Movie Universe costume.

Disney showed a sizzle reel during the panel that included concept art of Renner in the Hawkeye costume. As Coming Soon describes it:

Basically, Hawkeye’s costume is going to be very similar to the Ultimates version of the character and what he looks like on the cover to the left. In the concept art, we see Renner wearing similar dark glasses and a leather outfit with a matching over-the-shoulder leather quill for his arrows, only the movie version of Hawkeye has the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo emblazoned on it to show his government allegiances. His precision bow is much like the one used by archers who do it for sports and hunting, which again, is also much like the Ultimates Hawkeye.

As I said, this pretty much matches what we’ve already heard about movie Hawkeye, and Renner himself hinted at the costume’s design soon after he was initially cast in the role.

I feel like this should go without saying, but I don’t think anybody should be sad that they’re using the Ultimate Universe Version of Hawkeye over the 616 version. I mean, did anybody really want to see Jeremy Renner running around in a purple and blue suit wearing a tunic? Well, obviously the guy who designed this piece of fan art did, but still…

  1. I think the description sounds like it would fit more in line with a live-action film.

    • Agreed. I think this was a wise choice.

      • The 616 version just looks like it would be too cheesy on film, but works perfectly for the animated series.

        • Yeah. I like the look of it in the cartoon. But a real person running around in that……probably never happen.

        • Ghost,

Same reason virtually every costume that makes it into movie form is redesigned.

          Vic

          • Was that little shot necessary?

            • Uh, Jack, what the heck are you talking about? There was no “shot” there – I was just saying that the fact the most traditional spandex costumes would look dumb in live action is why they’re redesigned, expanding on what Ghost was saying.

              Yeesh.

              Vic

              • Vic,

question and opinion on the costumes in Watchmen.

What’ja think about them being true to the comic and did they seem cheesy to you?

I thought that since the actors seemed to buy into the movie, they worked.
                thoughts?

                • Nate,

Actually if you compare an image from the comic book to the film, the only costumes that were almost identical were Silk Spectre, Rorschach and The Comedian. The other movie costumes were quite different in detail from the comic book versions.

                  Vic

  2. who’s the chick between Fury and Thor?

    • Wasp

  3. I hope they dont show much of that “superhero”, very lame

  4. Ok, in that picture – is the Hulk supposed to be THAT big compared to the other characters?

    • Definitely not that big, but he is still very large compared to the rest.

    • That is a fan made photo though, not a studio released picture, so I am guessing its how the photoshopper felt he should be.

    • Doom3524 is right. That is a fan made photo (and not a very good one). Characters like the Wasp, Ant-Man and War Machine won’t even be in the Avengers movie (confirmed fact).

All those pictures were taken from different sources and edited into one lame photo. (Please start using a better photo, screen rant!)

Also, the Hulk won’t be that big. If you watch the Incredible Hulk you can see how big he is in comparison to us normal humans. (Obviously he will be more or less the same size in The Avengers)

P.S. I also think the version of Hawkeye that will be used in the movie will look good. Maby instead of glasses though, they could still pull of the mask (like in the cartoon)?

      What do you guys think?

      • I, personally, have always been a fan of goggles for archers. Not sure why, just seems like it would improve their focus to hit a target. Take out all the peripherals and distractions to focus on just your target. Thats just me though.

      • Don Cheadle will be in the movie bub….i saw the casting sheets for the filming in mexico.

      • Don Cheadle is in the movie, i saw the casting list for the movie in mexico.

        • Oh, sorry. Still, Ant-Man and Wasp definitely aren’t in the movie. That is a fact.

I saw an interview from MTV where they talked to Cheadle and he said that he won’t be in the Avengers…

He did say that they are working on a War Machine movie though…

          • @ TheAvenger

Ive seen where Don Cheadle is among the cast aswell in The Avengers. I guess we’ll see. And i too feel that they could have Hawkeye look good in a mask instead of sunglasses. The mask doesn’t have to be purple, it could be black to match the costume.

    • hulk is a little bit more than 9ft in the new IH movie. Abomination was a little bit over 13ft

    • Marvel’s websites states that the green hulk is about 7’8″, Thor is listed at 6’6″ if that gives you a better idea, but im sure they’re using different stats for the movie

  5. Glad they are using the ultimates version, would have looked very cheesy if they went with the original costume.

  6. Wait, so how many heroes are appearing in the movie besides the main 4?

  7. Yeah, I saw this coming and it’s a good move on their part. Hawkeye’s costume is one that would have never worked on the silver screen, no matter how hard anybody tries to imagine it.

Most of the time I’d argue it could be done, but not this time.

  8. I KINDA THOUGHT A CLOSER ADAPTATION OF 616 UNIFORM WOULD HAVE BEEN COOL IF EXPLAINED PROPERLY.

PERSONALLY, I WOULD HAVE USED CLINTON BARTON’S CRIMINAL BACKGROUND AS THE REASON HE IS FORCED TO WORK FOR SHIELD. ALSO THROW IN THAT HE WORKED AS A ARCHER FOR A CIRCUS HENCE THE THEATRICALITY. HE SUITS UP IN HIS LIKE 616 COSTUME AND IMMEDIATELY SHIELD AND THE AVENGERS LOOK AT HIM LIKE HE IS RETARTED. THE EVER ARROGANT, COCKY AND HUMOROUS SIMPLY STATES HE IS FORCED TO WORK WITH A SUPER SOLDIER THATS SUPPOSE TO BE DEAD, A DRUNK IN A WAR SUIT, SOME CRAZY GOD, AND GIANT JADE MONSTER. INSERT WITTY LINE ABOUT WANTIN TO STAND OUT OR DIE IN STYLE.

JUST MY THOUGHTs BUT I THINK ITS LAZY TO GO THE LEATHER OUTFIT IN PLACE OF COSTUME LOOK WITH OUT SOME SORT OF HOMAGE TO 616.

BIG FAN OF ALL CAPS. LOL. END RANT.

    • WOOT WOOT CAPS BABY CAPS WOOT WOOT!!!

  9. Green Arrow would kick his fletching up and down the street.

    • That’s just it mate, without the arrow in Green Arrow’s hand, he isn’t so effective. But Hawkeye is more bound to win in a fist fight.

      • plus he uses guns and rocket launchers(ultimate version) so i think hes got all angles covered

  10. Cool. Obviously, Hawk’s uniform has to be tweaked for a movie.

  11. Yes, I would prefer the comics costume from the comics of the 60s/70s. In fact, I will go farther: for ALL of the superhero movies, past, present, and future, both DC & Marvel, & any other companies, they should stick exactly to what the original concept of the costumes were. After all, clothes do help make the man, and those costumes are a small but integral piece of what made the heroes and villains popular in the first place, and vaulted them up to a level of prominance that would make them viable as movie subjects. Something that would apply here as well as in the clasroom: don’t forget your history!

  12. I had a feeling that they would use the Ultimate costume for Hawkeye and I agree with it. They seem to be using a good few bits from the Ultimate Universe. SLJ as Nick Fury, Bruce Banner working on a Super Soldier Serum and got turned into the Hulk, and the Hawkeye costume. I’m not saying it’s bad I’m just pointing it out lol

PS: I think the Hawkeye in the fan photo is NOT Clint Barton. I have an issue of Dark Reign: Hawkeye (which follows Bullseye as he uses Hawkeyes costume and name under Norman Osborn’s Avengers) and the Hawkeye in the picture is the same as on one of the covers

  13. I like the classic look better than the ultimate. The ultimate isn’t really a costume IMO. It’s just leather and glasses. And I have always been a big fan of his classic mask, I think it’s one of the more creative masks in the superhero world…

I understand why they are using the ultimate version but I really was hoping to see an actual Hawkeye mask and how they could make it work on film.

  14. Ok which came first? The Ultimates Hawkeye costume or Green Arrow’s (ie the one we see on Smallville)? There is a strong similarity you must admit. I hope he doesn’t do the voice-gag thing too. I’m not quite sure wearing shades in battle works well practically. It’ll keep falling off. I understand that its for glare while shooting but how convenient is it in a fracas? You have to try to keep it on and loook for it when it falls off!I am more of the original Marvel guy and thus sort of agree with Goldilocks. A more mature take on the original costume and not a sharp deviation. Like I’ve observed with the rest, there is an inclination towards the Ultimates concept (which no doubt will be more popular with the 90s generation of comic readers) so I submit. Its all about sales. Granted many costumes might look silly I’m real life but improvements can be done. A good example is Badtman’s costume over the decades

    • Ultimate Hawkeye came out around 2002-2003 in The Ultimates. Smallville Green Arrow made his appearance in Season Six which was in 2006

  15. Cough***Green Arrow rip off***Cough

    • I’m sorry but I hate it when someone tries to say a Marvel character or design is a rip-off of a DC charactor/design and vice-versa. Now yes the Green Arrow came first by at least 30 years but that does not mean Hawkeye is a rip-off. Do you really think both companies could make hundrends and thousands of heroes without some having similiar powers of MOs? I think something is a “rip-off” if too many similarities are there. Green Arrow and Hawkeye both use arrows. Hawkeye is also skilled with numerous other weapons (just look at his years as Ronin). If you want a rip-off, just look at how events in Captain America are occuring in Batman with just a little difference in them

      • @spearman19: Yeah. I agree. A lot of the heroes are the same but that doesn’t mean it’s a rip off. The characters are is still way different.

@Jack Bauer’s Man Bag: Dude, never call a hero a “rip-off” ever again or I’ll be under your bed with a hammer :P

    • Uh, no.

  16. To be honest, i wouldn’t mind if Hawkeye wore a mask w/ the costume. Doesn’t have to be purple or anything. But having him wear sunglasses would remind me of Green Arrow’s look from Smallville.

  17. Thanks, spearman, that’s what I wanted to know. Ultimates came first. Shame Green Arrow beat him to it on the screen though. There will always be that allusion to Oliver McQueen since majority of viewers would be ignorant of the Ultimates and familiar with Smallville. Something I’d have thought Marvel would prefer to avoid. Like someone said, it’s hardly a costume but arguably more realistic. Au contraire, with Phoenix Jones and co in Seattle who can say what looks realistic anymore. Who indeed?

  18. Ultimate Hawkeye costume is a good choice. It makes him look tougher and cooler.

  19. I just wonder if they’re gonna make the Hulk look the same as he did in the Incredible Hulk or change him again to make him resemble Ruffalo.

    • Ruffalo actually said himself that they will make the Hulk look like him. They are gonna use the same technology like they did in Avatar to do the facial expressions.

Check out http://splashpage.mtv.com/category/marvel/ where they have video-interviews of the actors.

The Hulk (I think) will still be about the same… just with some changes… like the face… and he will probably have more scenes where he talks.

      • @ TheAvenger

I guess i figured they would change the face due to Norton’s absence. I hope it’s only the face you can tell theres change & i hope it looks good. And seeing more of Hulk would be a plus.

  20. My opinion:

Keep the original costume but leave the tunic out. Leave the shades and make a cool looking mask.

What I am saying is “fusing” the Ultimates version with the normal version.

  21. If they have Hawkeye’s costume lookin like the way as its shown in the fan art picture, i wouldn’t mind. It would look good probly on film with the costume made with dark purple color material perhaps.

  22. All I know is that Jeremy Renner will have some serious bulking up to do. Deltoids especially.

Is it just me or does he look like he has a bit of a belly (stomach fat) going on?

  23. I think in the picture i saw, i noticed he had alittle where they all stood side by side for a photo up.

  24. Finally saw Thor and I’d have to say I’m happy with it. Wish they gave Hawkeye some action sequences though :)
