the avengers movie start date Nick Fury & The Avengers Assemble February 2011

Joss Whedon has quite a bit of time to re-work the script for The Avengers, the Marvel Studios flagship project which is set to kick-off the summer of 2012.

Actor Chris Hemsworth, the man who wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir as Thor in the Kenneth Branagh-directed film and as a member of The Avengers, let it slip last month that he’d be shooting The Avengers sometime in January/February. Now comes further confirmation that February is the start date for epic superhero adventure from another member of the cast – Samuel L. Jackson.

Earlier today, Sam L took part in some round-table interviews to promote Mother and Child, a film of his that debuts on the same day as Iron Man 2. During the discussion, the press took advantage of the opportunity to talk the big topics: Nick Fury and his future.

We know that after Iron Man, Jackson signed a long-term 9-picture deal. It’s expected that his character, like in the comics, will act as the essential link for recruiting The Avengers team and bringing them together as a unit under S.H.I.E.L.D. We know he’s in Iron Man 2 but we weren’t sure as to where he’ll pop up next. Not that it appears that he will be in The First Avenger: Captain America but not in Thor.

Q: You’ve talked about doing nine films as Nick Fury and that it would be a gradual road before you get a Nick Fury film. How has that journey been?

Sam: I got started on it when I did the end of Iron Man 1. My foot was on the path. Now, my foot is a little deeper on the path ’cause we’ve got Iron Man 2. I’m not in Thor. I’m supposed to do Captain America this summer in London.

Q: Why aren’t you in Thor?

Sam: I have no idea. I’m not in charge of making those decisions. I thought I was. They said I was in the trades, and I was like, “Oh, I’ve got a job!” And then, I called my agent and she said, “Nah, you’re not in it. They misprinted.” I was like, “Well shit, they need to pay me just ’cause they put my name in it.”

S.H.I.E.L.D. is Coming For Thor at the end of his movie and we already know that Agent Coulson, played by actor Clark Gregg in Iron Man, has a role in the film. We can assume he’ll be doing Fury’s dirty work in recruiting the Asgardian God but that’s not to say we won’t see some other surprise appearances, perhaps by Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark?

So, when will we get to see Nick Fury in a more prominent role? There’s been speculation that his 9-picture deal could include the option of a solo film for the character, but for me, he works better as a team player. According to him, he plays a much bigger part in The Avengers.

Q: Do you have any desire to campaign for your own Nick Fury film?

Sam: The Avengers is my own starring vehicle for that character, pretty much.

Q: But, that’s so far away.

Sam: That’s not that far away. It’s just February. I’ve got time to get in shape and everything.

  1. Good read, I must admit I didnt really expect Fury in Thor so no big shock there. As for a Fury solo movie, I agree with the article in that Fury is better as a team player.

One thing, you say Iron Man 2 opens May 7th? All the ad's on TV and bus's that I have seen say April 29th

  2. I'm pretty sure Nick Fury's movie will be called “S.H.I.E.L.D” or “Nick Fury Of S.H.I.E.L.D” or something like that. We'll get to see Fury's origin and see him in action with Dum Dum Dugan, Maria Hill, Sharon Carter,Phil Coulson and two future Avengers: Jessica Drew and Carol Danvers.

  3. Yeah it would be like a cleanup/flesh out movie. Dot the eyes cross the T's kind of thing. You see S.H.I.E.L.D in the background of all these movies and it's going to lead to a part of the audience wanting to know what's with this organization? Who are these people and why do they exist? It seems to me it aught to come sooner than later though. I'm not interested in the “Avengers” becoming in some lesser way a vehicle to tell about the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D.

  4. it comes out april 29th in australia, imdb says the 7th for america and they're a pretty reliable source, especially since the movies so close to release.

  5. I really have no interested in seeing a Nick fury or shield movie SLJ is a good choice for fury but I just don't see a point to either film. He'll there is a point to a cap America film but I don't want to see that either the casting ruined the entire film for me.

  6. Am i the only person who thinks that Samuel Jackson is the wrong person for a Nick Furry Movie. Don't get me wrong, he's a great actor and plays a great Nick Furry in the later years. but to do a full Furry movie you would need a younger actor. He's 61 now and not getting younger, by the time they get around to a nick furry movie he'll be 66-67-68. I'm not saying he can't do it, i just wanna see a younger actor play out the origin of Nick Furry

  7. Why does a Nick Fury Movie have to be his origin movie? I think it would be a continuation if anything. I don't think with a Nick Fury Movie they will go backwards. This isn't going to be Avengers Origins: Nick Fury. That would be a step back.

  8. I don't think it'll be an “all out” origins movie, just flashbacks with Fury and his “Howling Commandos” and how(this Fury) had to deal with racism, the infinity serum, and how S.H.I.E.L.D was formed. All that could be handled with quick sequences without making the movie “itself” an origin movie. With Marvel Studios making a S.H.I.E.L.D movie, I'm sure it'll be awesome, have plenty of Easter Eggs and cameos. I for one would like to see an appearance of Luther Manning who later becomes “Deathlok” played by Cuba Gooding Jr.

  9. The S.H.I.E.L.D movie would have to come out RIGHT AFTER the Avengers so that the other future Avengers like Carol Danvers aka Ms.Marvel and Jessica Drew aka Spider Woman could smoothly be transitioned into Avengers #3.

  10. Joss Whedon plus Samuel L Jackson is not a good combination IMO. Jackson is one of the things that could negatively effect the Avengers. He's all about the paycheck these days as his quote states.

  11. I'm glad Samuel L. Jackson is actually getting in shape for this role. Can't wait to see the films and leading up to the Avengers. This will be interesting.

  12. That would be cool, seeing Deathlok show up in a SHIELD movie.

  13. It would be excellent timing just wonder if Marvel is up for the idea? S.H.I.E.L.D. could really use some kind of clear time/story alignment. Gen. Ross was leading the org. at one point in the comics and of course we have Fury seemingly in charge in the “I.M.” movie continuity but Ross is visible in “I.H.” so I think their's plenty of story to tell to daisy chain the whole thing together. Help people see where they, S.H.I.E.L.D. is, in relation not just to the super soldier program but Weapon X and their involvement in the history of the Hulk as well as other meta-heroes.
