‘The Avengers’ Originally Had a Second, More Physical Villain

In Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the top grossing film of 2012, superheroes introduced over four years of Marvel Studios films came together for a common goal when the world needed them most. Loki, Thor’s evil stepbrother from Asgard, came to Earth and brought with him an army of alien soldiers with the help of Thanos, and by doing so, rallied together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk, along with the secretive S.H.I.E.L.D. organization and its top agents.

Loki however, wasn’t originally intended to be the only villain wreaking havoc against Earth’s Mightiest.

Marvel Studios is well-known for having strict creative control over each of their films – much to the chagrin of some of their directors – and it’s because of that long-term vision they were able to craft an inter-connected universe that paved the path for The Avengers and all of its success. When it came to their flagship film, there was only one main point of contention between the studio and writer/director Joss Whedon, and it was over a second main villain, one that could engage in fisticuffs with The Avengers.

Cinema Blend attended Director’s Guild of America screening of The Avengers yesterday Joss Whedon was in attendance and in a following Q&A session, revealed the following about the villains of The Avengers and how Loki became the solo adversary.

“I definitely felt like I have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, I have four of the biggest, baddest… just the toughest guys out there – and I have one effete British character actor… The ace in the hole is Tom Hiddleston, because he’s so compelling and commanding and gracious about it that it became, ‘Oh it’s about how he gets in their heads – it’s going to be fine. But it took me a long time to accept that because they need someone to hit!”

Whedon chose the Chitauri, and he chose to have Thanos appear in the post-credits sequence, but this second villain he would not reveal, as he says that character could show up in the films at a later point in time. From Whedon’s words, it seems obvious that the mystery character is physically intimidating, and one that has yet to be announced for the in-production films Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, so who could it be and could that villain show up in The Avengers 2 working for Thanos?

Kang? Korvac? Ultron? Who do you think Whedon wanted to see fight The Avengers in their first movie?

Note: Whedon also talked about early drafts of the script including Wasp in a major role when they were unsure of Scarlett Johansson’s availability, but that was previously revealed in the summer and we talked about it then. Count on her introduction in Phase Two, potentially in Iron Man 3.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. I think graviton would of made a good villain and still would!! Would also create a back story of his creation and unsettle the trust with shield because they’d be the ones hiding him and keeping him prisoner!!! Could of been released by Loki instead of him just wanting to release the hulk!!! I don’t know but would definitely love to see him in a future film!!!

    • Does anyone have any ideas of upcoming Heroes to be enlisted to the roster/killed off of the Avengers??

      • I personally doubt that they will kill anyone off as they are all such iconic characters but as for the introduced characters:
        1. Stephanie Szostak is rumored to be playing Janet van Dyne / the Wasp in Iron Man 3.
        2. Anthony Mackie will play Sam Wilson / the Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
        3. There have been rumors of Doctor Steven Strange appearing in Thor: The Dark World.
        4. Ant-Man will appear in his own movie released in November 2015 (after The Avengers 2) so he’ll probably join the Avengers in the third film.
So since the Falcon, the Wasp (maybe Dr. Strange) will appear in these films and all are well known Avengers members then i presume that they will appear in the second movie.

        • SPOILER!!!!!!
stephanie is not the wasp although it woulldve been a good idea

    • but the Loki/Hulk dynamic is what gave Hulk a reason to be there through most of the movie, and it got rid of him for a little while when there was nothing for him to do…

  2. I think they should kill Captain America in Avengers 2. Not that I hate the character, I loved all of them; hats off to Whedon, he did a great job. Anyways, if “Game of Thrones” taught us anything it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid to kill off a major character. The Cap would be an important enough character to kill, first of all, and his death would be the perfect motivation for the Avengers to end Thanos’ A$$… They should probably kill him around 75% into the movie… Why I chose Capo is because: “death” fears Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye are “only human”, Thor is a god (well, demi-god) and gods can’t die and, finally, why would you wanna kill Tony Stark?… You bastard…

    • You shouldn’t be afraid to kill off a major character, but you should have a reason to kill off that character. Thanos is hell-bent on pleasing Death by killing as many people as humanly possible, that’s all the motivation a hero needs to go after him.

Coulson died in Avengers. Let’s not fall into a trap where the villain has to kill one of the good guys in every movie.

      • or where the major villain has to be killed by the end of the movie. why would they kill Thanos?

    • Chris Evans is signed for six films. Unless they suddenly have him doing cameos at the ends of Thor AND IM3, they’re not killing Cap in Avengers 2. Besides, from a storytelling POV it makes absolutely no sense to do a heavy, emotional story like Winter Soldier and then off the guy.

      Not happening.

    • Cap is not being killed off. The ONLY scenario I can think of for killing Cap is the Civil War. But that won’t become a story plot because the whole Marvel Universe is involved in that and it would be insanely expensive to do that movie. Also you really don’t give a good reason to kill him, “motivation to end Thanos?” Motivation would be because he has the Infinity Gauntlets (which I think will happen in Avengers 2) and he is threatening to destroy Earth. No big Avenger is going to die because the movie is about how all the heroes came together to make the Avengers and killing some hero off early does not make sense. Wait for the whole team come together: Wasp, Ant-Man, Vision and MAYBE Ms. Marvel and Namor.(I think those are the other original Heroes, correct me if I’m wrong. I did not include Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch because they are X-Men characters before Avengers)

      • Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s rights are shared by Marvel and Fox, so they could include them, they just can’t call them mutants. I think it would be both compelling and problematic adding Scarlet Witch, because the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t really that big on magic right now: even the movie Thor was all about how Asgardian magic is just science. They could do that for Scarlet Witch’s chaos magic (chaos theory and all that jazz).

Anyway, Ant-Man won’t be there before Avengers 3 (except maybe for a cameo) because there’s no way they’ll include him before his solo movie and I think Wasp won’t be introduced in the team before Ant-Man.

Something really awesome would be having Ms Marvel, she’s a heavy hitter and God knows if you need them with something as big as Thanos, she’s smart, strong and also very popular in the comics right now.

Plus, I really want the Guardians of the Galaxy to play a role in Avengers 2 (which makes sense when you talk Thanos) just to see Iron Man’s face when he sees Rocket Raccoon.

        • Bringing in all these other Avengers will be hard, but as a fan I want to see that. I want to see a movie for each of these characters before they “join” the squad though. By the way, here’s something to think about:

          1) If you bring in Ms. Marvel, you’ll also bring in the Kree (then Skrulls).
          2) If you bring in Vision, you’ll definitely smell Ultron
          3) If you bring in Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, some hardcore fans will start questioning where the X-men are at.

hopeful but i can deal with reality

          • For Ant-Man it just clicked for me that there is absolutely no way Avengers 2 are having Ultron and Vision. Both are tied to Ant-Man and with his solo movie they probably will be the villain in the movie. Just like all these other heroes, most of them had solo movies introducing them to the Universe.
To add to your example for Scarlet and Quicksilver if not wondering about where the X-Men are at least their father Magneto!
Great points but I wanted to add to your argument. You are right on with Ms. Marvel (unfortunately, I mean it would be cool to have another woman hero on the team)

          • To true. I mean, in the marvel universe everything is so interconnected. You can’t introduce one character without introducing 5others.

          • You bring in Ultron, you need Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne

            • Well sorry all but Ultron is in for Avengers 2 bitches!

          • I agree with you totally this is a sham. I was hoping for the original team and not this farce. Rocket Racoon will be the Jar Jar Binks of the marvel universe.

        • The black panther is an original, before ms. marvel,

        • They included Hawkeye before he had a solo movie

      • idk, Ms. Marvel was all over the place and I am sure even she was in X-men before avengers, ‘cuase that is how “Rouge” got her non-mutant power up. I assume Quicksilver and Wanda are still under license as “xmen” property though. Sad becuase they are my favorite Avengers and suckiest Brotherhood of Evil Mutant enemies. A shame Marvel can’t reboot X-Men or Fantastic Four.

  3. Kang/Korvac/Ultron? Really these were your guesses? I think it is more likely that they were looking for someone simple to introduce and physical. Absorbing-Man is who I would imagine could fit in with zero effort.

    • Absorbing man would have been the choice for me as well…Loki gave him his power after all.

    • If Ultron is introduced then we get The Vision also. That is my pick from his examples, but Absorbing Man would be good too. Honestly there are to many Villains to choose, which in this situation is bad for the movies because of the fans standards of a good worthy villain with a lot of history with the Avengers.

      • Couldnt have Ultron because there hasnt been an Ant-man reference. Kang is possible but I would look for him in later Cap films.

        • Good point on Ultron. I would love Kang because that would finally bring in a time traveling aspect into the Marvel Movie Universe. I think they can put Kang into the Avengers.

  4. i think it could of been one of the villains from a pervious movie, stark’s enemies are dead, red skull- who knows? so it may have been abomination. tim roth has a contract with marvel to do more films, and would it generate hype for a new hulk movie in the process.

  5. I bet the character was abomination. He survived at the end of the Incredible Hulk and was strong enough to challenge the Hulk.

  6. What happened to Red Skull at the end of Captain America? is he dead or transported to one of the seven realms?

    • I personally think that the second villiain would have been Red Skull… I think he got teleported to another realm where he either came across Thanos and became loyal to him seeing him as a God or he found a race of beings that he’d use to take over other parts of the realms… I hope we get to see him in the next Avengers film.

  7. Wow, what a terrific article. You managed to fill a column and our heads with zero information. Who could the villain be?….. Well I don’t know do let’s just waste time. Could it be Ultron, maybe it was Batman, most likely it could have been the Toxic Avenger…

  8. Wow, what a terrific article…it has zero point our no information.

  9. Red Skull thought extremely highly of himself, and viewed himself as an equal to the gods, who he viewed himself as walking in the footsteps of. The special effects we see when Red Skull holds the cube show the cosmos, followed by Red Skull dissolving into a beam of energy that shoots into the cosmos. These were very similar to the effects used when Asgardians used the Bifrost Bridge (the Rainbow Bridge) in Thor. So this scene is implying that the Red Skull got his wish, and he’s now walking with the gods on Asgard, or one of the other 9 realms.

The ending of The Avengers provides partial confirmation, as Loki and Thor use the Tessaract (the new name of the cube) to return to Asgard, showing that the Tessaract explicitly has the ability to transport people to the other realms.

  10. @me & me me, you are a perfect example of a c*nt

  11. There was talk forever about The Red Skull being the second villain in The Avengers. He’s definitely “more physical” than Loki.

As for the person who said that Thanos should kill Cap off in The Avengers 2, you are not a real Marvel fan. Cap can’t die. Cap WON’T die. He’ll outlive all of us.

  12. I’ve also heard speculation that Coulson could be the Vision in Avengers 2, so Ultron would be a good character to bring in.

    • Cant do Ultron without Ant-man tie in.

  13. I personally think for Avengers 2, have Thanos appear maybe midway, and as they get near the ending, introduce the Skrulls. That way, Avengers 3 could borrow a storyline from the animated series, with the creeping suspicion and building paranoia of “Who’s human? Who’s a Skrull?” amping up the story.

  14. REDSKULL was their “hit”. That’s it. nothing more, nothing less..

It’s the truth.. don’t believe me?

Look up: The Avengers Redskull appearance.

  15. The Silver Surfer? Dr. Doom? Galactus? The only reason these guys would’ve been objected to was because of their involvement with the crappy Fantastic Four films, I think. Which was perfectly logical from Marvel’s standpoint.

There’s not many super villains that are both well-known and dangerous enough to physically fight ALL the Avengers. Personally, I would’ve gone with Taskmaster. Alone, he would be a huge pain in the ass. With Loki in his corner, however, he would be a major threat. Hell, in the right circumstances, he could probably kick everyone’s ass by himself. Plus, there could’ve been this whole thing where he would have a change of heart and turn on Loki…

    • Actually, it’s not that they didn’t want to(They may not have wanted to to true), it’s that they are currently not legally Allowed to use those characters because they were included in the rights to the FF films which are owned by Fox. So whether they wanted to or not doesn’t matter.

  16. I just have to throw in that Loki was not Thor’s step brother, he was Thor’s adopted brother as they shared no blood and where basically different species.

  17. That was the most pointless article I’ve ever read… Thanks for giving us literally no actual information.

    • I agree with Tensen.
The article could be condensed to “I don’t know”.
Literally nothing we didn’t already know.

  18. Maybe its Sub-Mariner i hope it is because i’d love to see him in a movie

  19. Galactus will be nxt in line for the villan role and the silver surfer will finally join them even though he was an original member

  20. Villains need to be:
    Avengers 2 – Ultron/Vision storyline
Avengers 3 – World War Hulk

Please no Kang, time travel is too much, besides that’s where X-men are going.

  21. Hm.. Lets look at it like this. First, Whedon has done a MARVELous job with The Avengers movie and I’m sure he will do amazing in the future. The Avengers has the potential to do more than 3 films. Possibly up to 5. Maybe more! Who knows? But maybe you could say Avengers 1 through 3 could be considered a Thanos saga. Maybe afterwards a Red Skull Avengers villian based more, then Ultron perhaps. There are several ways this could go!

  22. I thought Red Skull and Loki Should have teamed up in Avengers, would have made it a little more interesting. too be honest it was a 6 on 1 fight(They went through that army like it was nothing)

What would have been better is if they had a Villian for each superhero like Captian America:Red Skull Thor:Loki Iron Man:Mandarin or Justin Hammer and for Hulk:The Leader Plus That Army Now that would have been Epic

  23. Super Skrull?

  24. I would love to see Ultron.

  25. Ultron has serious problems. (twitch)

  26. Bring Adam Warlock.
