Nick Fury and the top secretive S.H.I.E.L.D. organization successfully defended Earth from an alien invasion in New York last summer by assembling The Avengers, and the onscreen team-up proved successful for fans, critics and the box office with a $1.5 billion worldwide haul. Now, it’s up to Tony Stark to once again to take the first step forward in launching “Phase Two” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) this summer, followed by friends, new and old, over the next two years, leading up to the next big event.

After Iron Man, Thor and Captain America all get another chance in their own feature, Marvel will introduce new characters with Guardians of the Galaxy, then bring them all together in summer 2015 for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2. But it’s not just the characters and stories that share connective threads.

Captain America: The First Avenger was the first Marvel Studios film shot in the UK at the Pinewood and Shepperton studios. The studio returned to shoot Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World in the fall, and is returning again this summer for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. As Screen Daily has learned, Marvel Studios will bring Whedon and co. back there yet again for The Avengers 2 and local production crews couldn’t be happier, being able to continue their relationship with the studio, working on the sequel to the third biggest box office success of all-time.

By comparison, The Avengers shot in Ohio, at Albuquerque Studios and various other locations across the U.S. Iron Man 3 shot mostly in North Carolina with some production taking place in Miami, Florida and China, and Captain America 2 begins shooting this summer in Ohio as well.

Both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor: The Dark World saw loads of set photos surface online from outdoor shoots, so assuming The Avengers isn’t all inside the soundstages of Shepperton and Pinewood, expect the same unofficial reveals come early 2014, when the still untitled The Avengers 2 begins principal photography.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.
