‘The Avengers 2′ Shooting Scenes in South Africa?

Avengers 2 Age of Ultron Logo The Avengers 2 Shooting Scenes in South Africa?

The script for The Avengers: Age of Ultron is done – or as “done” as it can be on a dynamic and ever-changing production from Marvel Studios. Writer and director Joss Whedon handed in the first draft back before the summer, just before Iron Man 3 premiered in theaters and in the months since it’s been re-worked and is now in the hands of some of the sequel’s key talent, including Jeremy Renner who’s reprising his role as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye in the followup where he’ll get a little more personality and screen time.

With a May 2015 release date, principal photography for The Avengers 2 begins soon at London’s popular Pinewood Studios – where Marvel previously shot Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of the film however, will also be shot in South Africa.

Back in May 2013, producer Anant Singh, Chairman of Cape Town Film Studios, told Cape Town radio station 5FM that they were in discussions with Marvel about possibly shooting some of The Avengers 2 there. As spotted by CBM, a South African casting coordinator, J.P. van der Merwe, has recently been added to the crew of the production, seemingly confirming that the team-up sequel will be shooting in multiple international locations.

Whedon previously spoke on the story of The Avengers 2 going more international and early casting rumors regarding the two new members joining Earth’s Mightiest – siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – being of European descent. All of that remains speculation and hearsay for the time being, and the same goes for the latest reports and rumors regarding The Avengers: Age of Ultron having another villain – read about that here (warning: potential spoilers) – and Robert Downey Jr. attempting to get his acting pals Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson in one of the Avengers sequels.

Black Panther Marvel Studios The Avengers 2 Shooting Scenes in South Africa?

The more interesting discussion point here is the obvious connection between the shooting location and Wakanda – a fictional African nation in Marvel Comics, home to Black Panther and the mysterious Vibranium metal alloy that Captain America’s shield is made of. There were rumors around the same time Marvel began looking into South African shooting locations that they were also looking to cast Black Panther, but nothing came of it. More recently, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige did say that a Black Panther film is “absolutely in development.”

“In terms of Black Panther, it’s absolutely in development, and when you have something as rich as Wakanda and [Black Panther's] backstory – and clearly, Vibranium’s been introduced in the universe already – I don’t know when it will be exactly but certainly we have plans to bring him to life someday.”

Is there any chance we can meet Black Panther in Age of Ultron? The Cape Town – Wakanda connection might sound thin at first glance if Marvel is only using Cape Town Film Studios to shoot, but if this does lead to what fans want (Wakanda!) there are exciting potential reveals ahead. A version of the Ultron villain is comprised of Vibranium in Marvel Comics so perhaps there’s a way to finally give some love to Wakanda and at least introduce it for later use in the franchise. We do not believe however, that there’s room to delve into Black Panther’s story arc anytime soon. We’re not even confident that Black Panther is one of the unannounced projects taking of the locked down Marvel release dates in 2016 and 2017.

In related news, last month we learned that Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy) will be taking over director of photography duties on Age of Ultron from Seamus McGarvey, who’s been busy with Godzilla and is taking on Fifty Shades of Grey next. Whedon brought in Davis based on the recommendation of Guardians director James Gunn.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 31, 2015, with unannounced films coming May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. Title says South Africa but my mind says Wakanda.

    • I did too but it probably doesn’t mean anything. First of all, Wakanda is not a real country so you don’t have to be in Africa and I’m pretty sure it was in Central Africa. But here’s hoping.

      • Fictional country or not, they’re there for the visuals and landscape.

  2. What if all hail the king one shot is actually about Wakanda that be cool.

    • Doubt it. It has something to do with Trevor Slattery (aka fake Mandarin).

  3. Yessssss

  4. @Bob I never thought of that. That would be cool. Fingers crossed.

  5. Awesomeness!!!!!

Would be cool if they brought it here….

  6. Is Marvel allowed to use adamantium in their movies since FOX owns the rights to the X Men franchise?

I’m just curious because Ultron is comprised of mostly adamantium and so I’m curious if they’ll be able to use it or if they’re gonna have to change it to Vibranium.

    • Well……

‘The first use of the term adamantium in Marvel Comics was in Avengers #66 (July 1969), where it refers to part of Ultron’s outer shell.’

I think they have a case that it belongs to The Avengers.

The assumption would be it is not. Now adamantium claws or adamantium bones might be questionable.

However since they went vibranium for Caps shield (which it originally was) one would venture to guess they are going that route with Ultron. As shown in The Avengers it can take a strike from Thors hammer.

With the collateral damage that strike created that would almost negate anything Thor or Hulk could throw at him. Bringing it down to a thinking game to take out Ultron instead of a knock down drag out.

  7. How cool would it be if Mel Gibson was playing black Panther? As we’ve seen with other characters, changing race is no big deal as long as they have the heart of the character intact

    • Casting an african with a white Australian is literally the plot to RDJ’s Tropic Thunder haha

    • You’re being sarcastic right?

    • In the world of political correctness run amok, that only works in one direction.

      • Yes Elfa, because Hollywood has had their foot on the throat of the white man for years.

    • YES!!! Casting one of the few black characters in a race that is completely under represented in this genre would be genius. *sarcasm*

    • How does Mel Gibson even remotely capture the heart of Black Panther?

  8. A black panther movie with the right tie ins could be amazing!

  9. The Black Panther character should be introduced fairly soon (if not in Avengers2 then in Avengers3), in order to be fairly consistent with the comic books and to have some racial diversity, on the actual Avengers team. (Most of the comic book franchises are reflecting reality in their casting by having some racial diversity. See below.)

(I could see the Avengers2 movie having an easter egg at the end of the credits -a scene with the Black Panther. Then perhaps his own movie and following that he would join the team and becomes an Avenger. Just in time for Avengers3)

In order to be fairly consistent with the comic books, the Black Panther should be introduced as an Avenger, either just before or just after Antman and the Wasp become Avengers.

The Avengers, (the film version),have no visible minorities on the actual team. (For the moment, forget about S.H.I.E.L.D)
The X-Men, in Days of Future Past will have several.
The new Captain America film, the latest Thor film and the Iron Man films all are doing a good job in terms of diversity.
There is talk on the internet that two of the characters in the future Justice League movie could be visible minorities.
The latest Spiderman movie will have Jamie Foxx as one of the villains.
Even the latest Superman movie made an attempt to cast visible minorities in two important roles. (Although I hope that there is more diversty in their future movies.)

    • Lets see…..

Black Widow is Russian (and a woman double!) I would assume that is a minority here in the US. Thor is an alien Im going to say he is a minority also. War Machine might be showing up also.

You cant forget about S.H.I.E.L.D as the lead ‘minority’ of that group more or less created The Avengers.

Im joking a bit with you here and understand what you are saying but the worse thing you can do is to place a character just for minority sake.

The reason I say this is if it doesnt succeed they will get backlash and if it does succeed they would need to keep it up all possibly based on pressure not planning and story.

I would much rather see a solo Panther. He is a strong enough character and secluded enough (own nation) to carry 2 maybe three movies. He has a rich and storied history/background that could start with his father, him dying at the end and he taking over the Panther mantle. Film two has him thinking he can do things differently then how his father did only bringing shame and threats to his people possibly losing the crown to the Apes. Third is him regaining his rightful position as leader….

All with no need of The Avengers. Cameos? Sure…. however solo IMO is the way to go with Panther.

    • You forgot that Don Cheadle’s Rhodey is in Avengers 2

  10. As with everything else Marvel, I’ll believe it when I see it as far as South Africa & Black Panther. The Wolverine (2013) is a perfect example, after 13 years and 6 films Logan is in Japan, which is the only logical place for him to get his Wolverine costume, yet despite filming the scene they decided not to use it. Stupid!!! Let’s just hope that Disney/Marvel is more concerned with pleasing their core audience than Fox/Marvel or Sony/Marvel.

    • Their core audience is the people that pay to go see these movies. Comic book geeks (myself included) make up a VERY small percentage of that.

  11. If BLACK PANTHER is in this, wow.. I just think this movie is getting too crowded . How are they going to get QuickSilver and Scarlet Witch AND Black Panther? Plus more Hawkeye? We will def need more Hulk, or what’s the use of his character development? Wow.. Too crowded. Do many characters I’m one movie idk how this will work.. Wow

    • Wow

    • If Wakanda shows up it doesnt necessarily mean BP is going to be on the Avengers. They could simply introduce the nation and its aesthetic setting up a BP solo later on. Maybe Tchalla will act as an ambassador on the world council?? maybe he will show one of the other avengers around the city?? There are many ways they can incorporate the character and not have him take up time dedicated to the main cast. For all we know Thor may get treated like Hawkeye in this film freeing up room for new characters. There are many ways to avoid overcrowding. Whedon did a fantastic job the first time around and I have complete faith in him to do it again.

    • Not sure if it will be too crowded. I think Ultron needs to be Wakanda to get his materials, just that… and probably we will be given the hint of Black Panther/T’Challa/T’Chaka there.. or in the mid-credit
If you play Lego Marvel Superheroes, both BP and GotG appeared on the end credit. Hinting much? haha

  12. Wait a minute… Dredd was filmed in South Africa. Age of Ultron wil be filmed there, too. This can only mean they’ll crossover and Judge Dredd will kill the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

On topic, I do hope this does mean an introductory note to a hopeful Black Panther film in Phase 3. Maybe T’Challa (I had to google his real name : P) sees the heroes fighting in Wakanda, or just on a TV, and becomes inspired to do good.

  13. I doubt Panther will be in it; its possible he does a Cameo. Like Ultron goes to steal Vibranium from Wakanda. Idk. Fo sure we know…

    Captain America
    Iron Man
    Black Widow
    Scarlett Witch

Who I think also has a possibility of showing up
    War Machine(almost sure he will)
Falcon(I think he will, not sure though, 60/40 chance)
    Ant-Man/Wasp(not sure, 50/50 chance)
Black Panther(not sure 50/50 chance again)

  14. I think this would be a cool way to introduce T’Challa, but not necessarily the Black Panther. Save all that for his own movie. The Avenger’s or S.H.I.E.L.D have some business in Wakanda, there’s a meet and greet, they shake hands, and they move on.

Side note, Denzel should totally play T’Chaka in the Black Panther movie. Make it an origins story about him getting killed by Klaw and T’Challa taking the mantle on. I’d watch that.

    • This ^

    • ALL OF THIS ^^^^^ or maybe Djimon Honsou could be T’Chaka and Marvel/Disney/Whedon(?) could find an fresh new face that is actually FROM Africa to play T’Challa.

      • Honsou is the best guy to play the black panther role right now, he might be a little older, but who cares about it, hopefully your right.

        • Klaw is a FF Villian. If they wanted Panther, Cast Micheal Jai White. Cause Panther is a martial artist. Denzel would be perfect for his dad. They should bring back Hatemonger, Just for a Black Panther movie. Make him an insane aryan terrorist

          • Klaw is one of BP’s major villains. Klaw did first appear in FF but so did Black Panther. However, the fact that BP appeared in FF first isn’t stopping Marvel Studios from making the movie.

Also, problem with Michael jai White:
            A) Cool actor but not a great actor
            B) He is only like 14 years younger than Denzel so having Denzel as his dad is weird. Plus, Denzel and White don’t look that different in age.

    • Like this as well ;)

  15. Thor 2, Guardians of Galaxy and Avengers 2 all filmed in London?

  16. Wow. Because some guy is from South Africa, now they are filming there? lol.

Should we look at where everyone is from?

    Maybe the moon, too.

    • Nope, that’s not why. It’s because their film studio head said they’d likely be shooting scenes there too.

  17. Mel Gibson is playing the Black Panther.

  18. All hail the king:
Black panther origin that also involves Trevor Slattery in some way.

  19. I would be content if they just introduced Wakanda and Black Panther to kind of tease a solo movie and make us anxious for him to join the team in Avengers 3. Makes me exciting what Joss is cooking up in that brain of his.

  20. I just want to see more avengers movies.. Idk the phase 2 solos have just been ok so far. Losing interest in the solo adventures.

  21. Have Cap in Winter Soldier loose his Shield from Winter Soldier, AoS goes to get Vibranium from WAKANDA to make a new sheild(and for the hydra weapon thingy that Sheild is making(which there should be more of in AoS))Then have them reason with T’Challa and have Coulson say, “We could use a director of tacticts ya’ know. You’d please Nick Fury very much.” T’Challa, “I do not trust a team that seeks destruction on the world, never will I allow myself to put Wakanda into the wrong hands for another countries sake.” The destruction part leads to Planet Hulk that involves BP to lead Wakanda to wage a war with Hulk. Only way to make PH work in the MCU IMO. Have him loose control, so they make a Hulk out of extremis(MCU red hulk)to fight Hulk. BP then joins the Shield council without Wakanda knowing.

  22. Wow.. So many characters. I don’t see how any of this will make sense.

    Captain America
    Reintroducing Iron Man
    Thor and his cape
    Hawkeyes (larger) role
    Black Window (spelling?)
    The mentioning of Paul Rudd
The Scarlet Witch and Quickie Silver sex scene
    Now black panther?
Will there still be room for Wonder Woman or Nightwing in this?

    • Just ask Bryan Singer, he’ll know the answer to handling ‘overcrowded cast’

  23. What if Wakanda is introduced in this and Black Panther is the antagonist of Ant-man?!

  24. IMO they shouldn’t bring BP to the Avengers, instead the Avengers should go to fight Ultron in Wakanda where Ultron has enlisted scientist named Ulysses Klaw to mine vibranium. And during the battle, Klaw would disintrigate because of the vibranium and have AoS to show how he comes back as a “hard sound” lifeform and he goes insane, blaming vibranium for his current state and then attack Wakanda where he would battle Black Panther.

  25. Michael Jai White is badass but a bad actor. Djimon Honsou is in GotG. Personally I really want to see the kid from 42 (Jackie Robinson) portray a comic book character. Marvel should snatch him up for T’challa.

  26. I think this is just a sign that Black Panther will at least be hinted in the movie. I mean, Wakanda itself has been hinted in Iron Man 2.
They don’t need to show him in costume, perhaps just a phone call by Nick Fury in the end credit and he reveals the responder to be T’Chaka/T’Challa is enough. After all, he’s probably going to be in Phase 3…

They definitely need to address Ant-Man, somehow as well. Oh wait, Hank Pym studied Vibranium in Wakanda too… hmmmm

  27. Morris Chestnut for T’Challa

  28. Funny how Africa is mentioned and people go nuts thinking Black Panther.

They’re probably using parts of Soweto as a location for Bruce Banner scenes (since he was helping in India in the last Avengers movie) or some other non-BP related thing.

I’m glad someone else brought up Dredd because I was going to do the same thing. It doubled as a great Mega-City One due to it being like a post apocalyptic world in some parts of the country so it could be where we’re introduced (or reintroduced) to a character that isn’t Black Panther or even related to him.

  29. maybe they can use this as a platform to introduce us to t’challa and his father t’chaka then go into a black panther movie
