The Avengers 2: Shooting Locations & Joss Whedon’s Inspirations

The Avengers 1 Movie Roster Promo Art The Avengers 2: Shooting Locations & Joss Whedons Inspirations

The cast of The Avengers: Age of Ultron have their scripts in hand and production is gearing up to begin this March. Disney’s Marvel Studios will be shooting primarily at London’s Pinewood Studios where they previously worked on Captain America: The First AvengerThor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy.

The sequel to The Avengers was said from the beginning by writer and director Joss Whedon to be going international and over the last few weeks we’ve learned more about some of the on-location spots around the world where they will be filming parts of the movie. We can add Italy and Korea to that list with the latest news.

While Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo tease a darker, funny and “cerebral” followup from their read-throughs of the Age of Ultron screenplay, none of the stars spoke on the addition of new characters or new locations, but some of the recent shooting location announcements offer some hints on that front.

Before Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were cast as new Avengers members Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, respectively, it was rumored that Whedon’s version of the siblings had their origins stemming from Europe. Since they’re characters who don’t initially agree with what The Avengers stand for and may or may not work for one of the villains in the beginning of the film, some reports indicate that said villain could be Baron Wolfgang von Strucker – to be played by Dracula’s Thomas Kretschmann. Strucker, in Marvel Comics, fought in both World Wars, worked with the Nazis, and lived through the ages thanks to the use of super-soldier-esque serums.

A press conference this morning confirmed that several scenes in The Avengers 2 will shoot in Northern Italy’s Fort Bard and judging by the location and image above, we wouldn’t be surprised if those scenes tie-in with the von Strucker character. Whedon and co. will also be shooting in the Aosta Valley.

We previously learned that the sequel will also reportedly be shooting scenes in South Africa leading some to believe that the fictional nation of Wakanda from Marvel Comics (home of the Black Panther character and family) may finally be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Adding to Italy and South Africa, KDramaStars reports that they’ve confirmed that The Avengers 2 will feature 10-15 minutes worth of scenes in Korea to be shot in April, specifically Gangnam and Gyeonggi-do. They claim to have heard rumors that the scenes may involve a “disaster” scenario and that Korean stars Kim So Yeon, Han Se Yeul or Kim Min Jung are all up for a potential role. Another site, allkpop, adds to the rumor claiming that the female character could be a small villainous part.

Red Skull The Avengers The Avengers 2: Shooting Locations & Joss Whedons Inspirations

Rumors aside, it’s clear that Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios weren’t kidding about making The Avengers sequel “global” and we’re curious to see what stories from the comics they draw upon and how it may tie into the past based on its connections to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the inclusion of a villain with WWII roots. Remember, an early version of The Avengers script had the Red Skull (from Captain America: The First Avenger) returning as a villain before it was decided that Loki would take that job.

“The events of Captain America [The Winter Soldier] will definitely affect the world of Avengers 2. But at the end of the day, I have to make my movie assuming that people will only have seen the first one, or possibly not even seen the first one. I can’t assume that everybody went to see Thor [The Dark World], Captain America, and Iron Man 3 in-between. I have to go from one movie to the next and be true to what’s happened [in the previous movies], but not be slavish to it. [...] The model I’m always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is The Godfather: Part II where a ton has happened in-between and it’s a very different movie [from Part I], but you don’t need any information. It’s there in the film about what’s happened since, what’s different, and why is this a different film; why is it a different kind of structure, and why is it darker. It’s all there, you’re in the vernacular of the first movie and you’re just ready to pick up in this new place, and hopefully that’s what will happen with my movie. Obviously I’m talking about one of the greatest films ever made (The Godfather: Part II)… I hope mine will be good, but that is my guiding star.”

The one downside of the film medium for these larger multi-part Marvel stories is outlined right there by Whedon when he explains that he won’t be taking full advantage of the story arcs of the previous films since not all of the moviegoers will have seen them. Still, the continuity must be maintained just as much as The Avengers: Age of Ultron must stand on its own.

With Whedon and co. continuing to describe The Avengers sequel as being darker, hinting at some character deaths, what do you make of his comparisons or inspirations from The Godfather sequel?

  1. If Red Skull came back in an end credits scene, I would be so happy.

(And yes I know Hugo Weaving has no interest in coming back)

    • They could always recast Weaving. I mean really…he read the script for Captain America…he played the part, and then he whined about it. Recast and keep it moving.

      • He did the same thing with Megatron from Transformers.

    • I think Robert Redford will be Red Skull. I think he’s the one pulling the strings behind Bucky’s return.

      • That has been my guess as well. It bugged me that so many people believed RS to be dead after going through the portal (They all did the same thing with Loki). I hope that Redford will secretly be RS in disguise.

      • I agree they probobly made him red skull just like they did with the senator in earths mightiest heroes episode code red were he was behind bringing back winter soldier to attack the avengers

      • I think Redford’s character is the Clairevoyant, since AoS will tie in to TWS. Unless they reveal his identity in the show.

        • And perhaps the Clairvoyant is Red Skull.

    • dont need him… you can get away with red skull being different because he has make up on

      • As awesome as Hugo Weaving is, if they need Red Skull, I think they’ll recast him if anything.

        • I would LOVE if Nick Fury was Red Skull. It would really make the Avengers question who they can trust and it would come as a massive shock to everybody

  2. Wakanda, here we come…?

  3. Korea? Great! That means there may indeed be some truth to the rumor that the movie will involve:
    Spoilers Ahead!!

A dance-off contest Gangnam style between the heroes and the villains on the Great Wall of China!! (Hadja going for a minute there, didn’t I?)

  4. It’s always up to ‘the sequel’ to prove insure the quality of a franchise. Especially one so monumental as Avengers Two! Whedon has his work cut out..

    • Yeah Godfather part 2 took Godfather to another level, the same with Batman Begins/Dark Knight. With Avengers Whedon has to do the same.

      • Also, Star Wars/Empire Strike Back

  5. this film is gonna look beautiful. they must be fighting multiple ultrons around the world, each hero will travel to a different part of the world because ultron is creating himself over and over again in these parts of the world. i think that the end will be a fight against the real/first ultron and this one will probably have something special like vibranium armor compared to the other ultrons.

  6. Death is good. Potential deaths for each Avenger….. Tony Stark will watch Rhodey die. Stark can go on in iron man movies without Rhodey. Thor will lose Jane. We know he has to go back home and if she dies he will get revenge on earth and go back. Captain will obviously be more involved with widow. I see her dying this have Cap mad and Hawkeye. Bruce is rumored to have a girlfriend this time around probably Betty so they kill her and there’s Bruce’s motivation. I would have said Pepper for Tony but I’m still hoping they present rescue at some point.

  7. Yea that seems like the most logical plot. Thats doesn’t sound too deep when you think about it.

  8. They should kill Cap…it could extend his trilogy a little bit.

  9. Already shapin up to be substantially better than Avengers

  10. Global locations….. Australia’s a great place (hint hint) :-)

    • Oops, sorry, I spelled “wrong” rong. Silly me.
Now I bet I got it ryte.

      • Wrog again.

  11. YESS!!
The film will need more than 1 villain other than Ultron.
Avengers 2 will rule the box office in 2015.
    Make Mine Marvel.

  12. I know this might get blasted, but does anyone else maybe think he isn’t approaching the marvel world properly anymore? With the misuse of Hawkeye in the 1st one, AOS, The change of Ultron, and the whole not really using the other movies as huge building points doesn’t it seem idk a little misguided?

    • Your concerns don’t concern me. I see many of your concerns as non concerns.

Anyone’s opinion of Hawkeye may vary, AoS is perfectly fine, to me whatever they change about Ultron is probably better in the long run.

“not really using the other movies as huge building points” Not even close to what’s actually being said.

      • If my concerns don’t concern you then why comment? Obviously they do if you felt the need to comment and voice your concern about what i said

        • And that’s just a misguided perception.

          • Then why comment

            • You ask if anyone thought he wasn’t approaching the Marvel world properly anymore, and Kato didn’t agree with any of your concerns and commented. You interpreted that as secretly agreeing with you… seriously?

            • I agree with you. AOS is terrible anyone can see that!! Hawkeye was a waste.
Changing ULtrons story, and now Hank Pym is 70. But we will have to see where he takes it now.

You should question peoples vision other wise you get a Mandarin twist. Ironman franchise is ruined IMO as far as seeing him facing off with his archenemy. You build up to Ironman facing off with the Mandarin from the 1st movie and then you get someone acting like a clown for the finale. Now all they have is B list villains left so I seriously doubt if there will be another Ironman movie. Marvel knows its ruined or they would be announcing more Ironman movies, it made a billion (I dont know how?) but the dvd sales sure don’t show it

I guess they can still use Modok but it wont be the same. Its not good to follow someones vision blindly or you look up and everything is totally different from the comics and its also a bunch of boring crap.

    • I don’t think he’s approached the Marvel World, at least regarding Avengers, any differently than the creators from the other movies. I haven’t cared for Joss Whedon’s treatment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I thought Avengers was no different, yet actually worse, than any other Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that came before it with the only difference having all the characters in one movie. He used all of the material from the First Phase and brought them all together for Avengers and added Thanos. Hawkeye was the most stand out character in Avengers for me. I haven’t watched Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for awhile because I was bored with it very quickly, I don’t believe they will have anything to do with Avengers: Age of Ultron anyways. Change of Ultron, hopefully not too drastic but I wouldn’t be surprised, is to give Tony Stark relevance after Iron Man 3. (If Tony Stark is indeed the creator, which seems pretty obvious at this point if Ultron is meant to be an off-shoot of an Iron Man suit.) Thor: The Dark World set up Guardians of the Galaxy which seems to build towards Avengers 3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier should change S.H.I.E.L.D. going forward. I’m really interested how Joss Whedon will use Thanos in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

  13. I don’t get the love people have for Loki, I agree he’s wonderfully played by Hiddleston but as an antagonist he’s boring and not menacing … especially in The Avengers.

Red Skull would have been a much more interesting character for The Avengers.

    • Yeah, he came across as comic relief more than threat.

Then again, I still wonder exactly what The Hulk did to steal the show since most people claim he was the best thing about the movie and I wholeheartedly disagree (Iron Man was).

      • I guess its because the mark Ruffalo Hulk was better interpreted in the Avengers, the cgi hulk was more photo realistic, There were some money shots involving the hulk, like when he changes and punches that giant leviathan, and then you have the funny moments like when he punches thor and beats up Loki. But yeah Ironman carried this film, along with Lokis charm and humor.

    • Well Red Skull wasn’t the villain get over it. The box office numbers seem to agree with what Whedon did so you not liking Loki as a villain is pretty irrelevant!

    • Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Loki the very first villain that “The Avengers” faced in the comic books?

      • I’m already tired of Loki being the main villain. I think he is totally being over used.
Im as tired of him as I am of Magneto and Lex Luthor always being the villains. Since we can assume he will be in Thor 3, I think you will see Loki fatigue set in at the Box office.

I predict its not really Ultron in the end of Avenger 2 its Loki in an Ultron mask.

    • Loki is well received partially because of Hiddleston’s acting and might be due to the fact he is one of the only villains not to be killed off(or seemingly killed off) after one film. To be honest without Loki to provide exposition and some form of interaction with the Avengers that movie would have been a bunch of Super Heroes versus nameless, growling generic aliens.

That is one of the things I find puzzling about the Marvel “cinematic universe”, the total lack of recurring villains. And while comic fans are excited about the use of Ultron in Avengers 2, at this point it is becoming too common place for the main bad guy (or guys) to some kind of robot or mechanical construct. One of the things I might have missed in these articles is any mention of one key point about Ultron, is it going to be made of Adamantium or is that going to be left out of the story because of it’s connection to Wolverine which is a Fox product.

      • If I’m not mistaken Captain America’s shield was said to be made out of this in First Avenger.

    • I agree , especially planet hulk spinoff. Hopefully Whedon will use concurrent character adventures and also crack open the Marvel universe with Scarlett W, Quickslvr, Falcon, Black Panthr and maybe hint at beta ray or Vision

  14. ^ I want to see Cap pick up Mjonir somewhere in there too dude. That would be the perfect way to prove his worthiness of being the Real leader of the Avengers

  15. Reasons why Marvel will continue to make better movies than DC: Better directors (Joss Whedon), casting (Elizabeth Olsen, RD Jr.,etc.), and humor. I hope I’m wrong and Batman Vs. Superman is amazing and rivals Marvel Studios.

    • Hate doing this because I like both but your comment is subjective at best.

      Better movies?

Other than The Avengers, I’ll give you that.

      Better cast?

Not sure, I still prefer Norton as Banner, otherwise equal footing there.

      Better director?

Sorry but I haven’t enjoyed anything Joss Whedon has ever done. The only thing I have liked was the fantastic Spartacus show and that was down to Jed Whedon, not Joss and even then, Jed worked alongside Robert Tapert and the Raimi brothers as far as producing and writing the show.

I’d say DC has the better TV show because Arrow has been fantastic (the wait for its return on Feb 20th is horrendous) and AoS has been an abortion of a show that should be put down humanely and buried next to Jimmy Hoffa.

      • An Abortion,I like that……even better then my favorite,Train Wreck

  16. I don’t really care about rumors because Joss Whedon can’t seem to make a bad movie. avengers 2 should at least be enjoyable. Not sure i want black panther in this one, seems like we have enough characters already with new additions. Only thing im hoping for is civil war story line after phase 3. Say phase 4&5 dedicated to civil war…but im not gonna hold my breath

    • Joss Whedon cant seem to make a bad movie”? Lol everyone is capable of making poo quality films. I love Nolan but there is still that chance of him making an actual terrible film that would get 0% on RT. Do you not know that Whedon wrote Alien resurection and waterworld? Most would argue those films suck. but then again this a genre he is familiar with so at this films worst it will just come off as mediocore.

  17. I’m just a little disappointed that Scarlet Witch is a young girl. They teased the connection to Colson heavily in the first Avengers.

  18. I love that the Avengers is going to be more global this time around. It makes sense too because Ultron is a tech based life form. A being like that can wreak havoc anywhere on the planet that has satellite transmissions to tap into.

  19. London gets all these fun films in their neck of the woods!

  20. The Avengers was the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time(maybe a few people missed it), but I’m just wondering why anyone(probably from a 4th world country)would want to go into the theater to see this, knowing damn well that they didn’t see the first one. All, kinds of stupid, there, unless the person just so happened to walk into that one by mistake.

  21. Call me cynical but I think his main inspirations is the huge pot of cash he has been given for making it. Plus the overwhelming need to make another mediocre film that does not meet expectations, yet makes all the fanboys wish for a third Avengers film to really do the franchise justice…

    • the hell are you even saying? The first film was far from “Mediocre”. Sorry it wasn’t a full fledged drama story like Nolan’s films. The film, I guess, isn’t for everyone.. and yes, you are being cynical. Whedon didn’t do it for the “cash”, he seems like the type of person that LOVES the work he does with, oh, i don’t know, the comic series’ he has done.

  22. My latest opinions on what may happen in Avengers : Age of Ultron

If Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch join the avengers, it may be that Captain America 2 gives us the clue to the plot. Black Widow, Cap and Fury fight together. Renner is not in Cap 3 but he will also join those and have a big scene where they encounter Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. This is the only way I can see Renner having a bigger part.

Iron Man now uses Extremis armor which is JARVISless. Stark decides to give JARVIS a body that turns into ULTRON. Scarlet Witch is the one that will save the day with a magic spell that ULTRON cannot stop.

Not much has really been discussed or perpetuated about the metals adamantium and vibranium which are used in caps shield. ULTRON eventually made an adamantium body.
Whedon only said the creation of ULTRON was different but not his overall characteristics.

    Easter eggs:
The following characters may get an option of being accessed in later movies
Falcon who had a comic with cap but i would prefer he was in cap movies and not an avenger.
Filming is in South Africa, may lead to references about vibranium and the king of wakanda.
I would personally like to see Vision or at least something about him as he has a relationship with the Scarlet Witch.
You would think that multiple bodies would be created during the movie otherwise the HULK will have nothing to do. He will rip up the first body.
How will Thor be immobilzed? Maybe ULTRON upgrades his chassis before running into Thor.
Fury is being rumored to maybe being coffinized.
I don’t expect to see any magical items besides the Scarlet Witch.
it would be cool to see them fight some minor super powered crims as subplots to the main event but doubt it. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch will probably start as villains and come good.
