The Avengers 2 Release Date The Avengers 2 Release Date Confirmed; Will Get New Title

When Disney and Marvel Studios made the official announcement that Joss Whedon signed a three-year exclusive studio to write and direct The Avengers 2, while also helping develop a live-action TV series on ABC, it was very obvious when the sequel to the third-biggest box office success of all-time would come out.

Today, Disney and Marvel Studios have confirmed the date and to no surprise, The Avengers 2 will be coming to theaters May 1, 2015.

Let’s flashback just over one week ago where Disney released the following official statement about the Joss Whedon deal.

Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC.  He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

We immediately called out the end-date of this deal as when The Avengers 2 would be coming out, and knowing how all three Iron Man films along with The Avengers opened each respective summer movie season in the first weekend of May, it was a no-brainer that The Avengers 2 - the sequel to the biggest summer film of all-time – would be doing the same on May 1, 2015. Here’s the official announcement:

The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.

Each press release seemingly confirms or teases what the next could be about and this one confirms that The Avengers 2 won’t be titled “The Avengers 2.” Just like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World, the film will embrace a subtitle in favor of the numbered system employed by the Iron Man films.

Our other question directly relates to the bigger picture plans of Phase Two. The Avengers represented a fluke year in Marvel Studios’ forward-thinking plans of having at least two theatrical releases per year (The Runaways was initially meant to be the other for this year). With two-three films coming next year, and two confirmed films for 2014, it’s a safe bet that there will be at least one other 2015 release from Marvel Studios and it’d be smart for them to get it out just before The Avengers 2, utilizing a spring release date just as Captain America 2 will be doing in 2014.

Let the speculation begin!

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014 and The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015.

  1. THE AVENGERS 2; INFINITY GAUNTLET… I HOPE XD. I prefer sequels with titles. Iron man 2 didnt have it and i always wondered why but it doesnt matter.

    • If it did have a subtitle, what do you think would have been fitting?

  2. It’ll be hard to think of a title. if we don’t dont know who the villain will be or the plot of the movie. But hopefully the Kree/Skrull war will make it to the big screen. All i know is it would have to be a bigger plot than Earth’s fate.

  3. I think the title was pretty obvious during the end credits…Marvel’s The Avengers: Shawarma Feast

    • +1

      • +2

    • sure, they had us drowling when we saw Thanos face. but that was just a teaser to let us know that’s how far and deep they can go with it. Only an assumption. Still have you guessing. i think we should know for sure in about 3 to 6 months from now. i love the suspense.

      • they confirmed he’s the villain…

  4. the avengers 2 is coming in mai 1 2015 and the avengers:infinity gauntlet is truly great title from the avengers sequels.

  5. This makes me wonder quite a bit in what would fit into an April 2015 release in terms of fitting into the MCU based on what is already set to be released.

I don’t think something after TA2 would work as well right after a huge ensemble movie.

  6. My bet for a Spring movie would be Ant-Man. That makes the most sense, to me

    • I’m thinking they’ll actually release Ant-man in 2014… there’s been a few hints from the company and Edgar Wright that that’s what they’re aiming for.

      • Agreed.

      • Okay, but then that would mean 3 movies in 2014. Captain America: TWS, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man.

The new Cap movie and Guardians is already confirmed for 2014 after all.

So 2 movies for 2013, 3 movies for 2014 and only Avengers 2 for 2015?

Maybe they really gonna push Ant-Man over to 2015 April… who knows.

  7. My bet for a Spring movie would be Ant-Man. That makes the most sense, to me.

  8. The avengers 2: Earths darkest hour

  9. As much as I would like something like AVengers : Infinity Gauntlet (or How about AVENGERS VS THANOS ? XD), I dont think there’s a chance that they’ll name it like that – the point is, these films ALSO cater to the general masses who wont have have a clue on what may be the gauntlet etc, heck it might even seem seem strange to them !! so look for a more ‘main stream’ sort of title like it had been called in UK and other parts – Avengers Assemble! so mey be it would be Avengers ReAssemble !!

    • Well, we know that’s not a problem for Marvel since they subtitled the Thor and Cap sequels:

      Captain America: The Winter Soldier
      Thor: The Dark World

General masses don’t know that that means. In truth, the only thing that matters is that “The Avengers” is somewhere in the title and that its trailer is awesome.

  10. Avengers 2: Re-Vengeance

    Avengers 2: Life after Shwarma

Avengers 2: More Jokes, More Explosions, More Avenging.

    • ….I’m feeling the third one….

  11. Now, THAT is a confirmation. And whaddayaknow, it’s not June as the “confirmation” stated in a recent news said. ;)

  12. * minus “stated”

  13. Avengers 2: Avenge Harder

    • Get out of my mind man! That’s what I was gonna say!

    • Beat me to it!

An then the third one can be called Avengers with a Vengence.

    • Actually, I don’t care what it’s called. I’m calling it Avengers 2: Avenge Harder anyway!

    • I was totally thinking that!!!!! You must be a very skilled extractor!

      • +1 Inception reference.

  14. My idea:

The Avengers 2: Operation Galactic Storm

Since “The Other” looked a LOT like Ronan, the accuser (am I the only one who thought this when I saw his “cowl”?), they could have “Galactic Storm” before the Kree/Skrull war. Hopefully. I mean, a man can dream, right?

  15. Oh yea!!! Now that there’s an official date!!! Can’t Wait!

  16. May 1st? Just one day before my birthday! – perfect timing as always Marvel! :D

    • Two days before mine. I love that a lot of the Marvel movies come out around that time, because then I can sucker my wife into going with me as a birthday present. :)

  17. sucks we have to wait 3 years for it to come out :(

    • true but just think of the movies we are getting before then. take it 1 movie at a time :D and it will come.

  18. That “other” film for 2015 should be THE INCREDIBLE HULK 2. WE NEED MORE RUFFALO NOW!

  19. Of course, Rob and Screen Rant called this last week which I agreed with.
With Whedon’s contract ending June 2015 The Avengers 2 had to be out by then.
May 1st is logical too allowing two months of promotion by Whedon still under contract.

    • Check’s in the mail, Robert ;)

      • Say, thanks Rob :) It will arrive at an opportune time.

  20. the first Avengers movie had a subtitle in the UK anyway it was called Avengers Assemble so they could called the sequel Avengers Reassemble or The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

    • The UK title was to avoid confusion with British TV series of the same name.

    • Other than ‘Avengers: Avenge Harder’ ;), I’m thinking ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ as well…

It could also depend on what the story will be about. A few more options:
      ‘Avengers: Journey Into Wakanda’
      ‘Avengers: Disassembled’
      ‘Avengers: The Infinity Guantlet’
      ‘Avengers: The Rise Of Ultron’
      So many other possibilities…

  21. I’m still hoping beyond hope they don’t completely screw over Pym and Ant-man so my title would be:

    Avengers 2: The Ultron Imperative.

  22. How about Avengers 2: Rise of Thanos?

  23. I think they should have a contest to see who can come up with a title for the movie. The winner gets to go to the pre-screening and a meet and greet with the stars.

  24. Hold on a second. i thought we were all gonna die this year on December 21. How are we gonna see it?

    • Screw death! This movie’s gonna rock! There’s no way a silly thing like the end of the world is gonna get me down ;)

  25. Avengers 2 – Rocket Raccoon gets Rabies

    • Avengers 3: Rocket Raccoon Gives Rabies

  26. Avengers 2 : The Infinity Gauntlet

Avengers 3 : Civil War (in which they could also get into the secret skrull invasion)

  27. The Avengers: More Than Just 2

  28. Well since they’re considering making a new Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo, I’m guessing that movie will be the one before Avengers 2.

  29. The Avengers: Rise of Thanos or Rise of the Masters (the Masters of Evil if they are introduced into the Avengers 2)
