When Disney and Marvel Studios made the official announcement that Joss Whedon signed a three-year exclusive studio to write and direct The Avengers 2, while also helping develop a live-action TV series on ABC, it was very obvious when the sequel to the third-biggest box office success of all-time would come out.
Today, Disney and Marvel Studios have confirmed the date and to no surprise, The Avengers 2 will be coming to theaters May 1, 2015.
Let’s flashback just over one week ago where Disney released the following official statement about the Joss Whedon deal.
Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.
We immediately called out the end-date of this deal as when The Avengers 2 would be coming out, and knowing how all three Iron Man films along with The Avengers opened each respective summer movie season in the first weekend of May, it was a no-brainer that The Avengers 2 - the sequel to the biggest summer film of all-time – would be doing the same on May 1, 2015. Here’s the official announcement:
The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the biggest Super Hero blockbuster and third highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon returns to write and direct the UNTITLED MARVEL’S AVENGERS SEQUEL set for release May 1, 2015.
Each press release seemingly confirms or teases what the next could be about and this one confirms that The Avengers 2 won’t be titled “The Avengers 2.” Just like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World, the film will embrace a subtitle in favor of the numbered system employed by the Iron Man films.
Our other question directly relates to the bigger picture plans of Phase Two. The Avengers represented a fluke year in Marvel Studios’ forward-thinking plans of having at least two theatrical releases per year (The Runaways was initially meant to be the other for this year). With two-three films coming next year, and two confirmed films for 2014, it’s a safe bet that there will be at least one other 2015 release from Marvel Studios and it’d be smart for them to get it out just before The Avengers 2, utilizing a spring release date just as Captain America 2 will be doing in 2014.

@Shrewloo – Yep, every 3 years man. “Avengers 3″ should hit theaters in 2018. Every 3 years is good, i’m cool with that. Now if it was every 5 years, hell no, haha. Now all Marvel has to do is get their house in order and increase the actors contracts and keep it moving.
It’s not set in stone but I heard Avengers 3 was coming out in 2017. Probably due to no more Iron Man movies but that could always change..
@Greenbean – “Avengers 3″ would most likely come out early May 2018 if i we’re to guess. I’m not sure any more ‘Iron Man’ films will be released, if that deal ‘RDJ’ signs for is only for “Avengers 2 & 3″ like i’ve been hearing, than there won’t be any more ‘Iron Man’ films for a while.

Sux how they destroyed the fan 4 SERIES I think a solo silver surfer movie would bring a multi million number audience… so many possibilities. The ending of the garbage x3 movie left some possibilities but they pretty much killed that franchise with the weak story plot… I mean really… wolvie kills dark phoenix??? Not in a trillion lifetimes. If it were up too me… I’d make a movie about one of the omega level mutants!
