Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch Confirmed for Avengers 2 Aaron Johnson A Top Contender To Play Quicksilver in The Avengers 2

[Update: Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirms talks with Marvel and discusses character.]

Over the last two weeks Marvel Studios has managed to keep fans’ attention away from recent news regarding The Avengers 2, by having them speculate over the series of high profile casting announcements for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy which begins shooting later this month in London. Names including John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro have distracted from that fact that both Marvel and rival studio Twentieth Century Fox are currently planning on confusingly using two of the same characters in their biggest respective franchise films over the next two years.

Joss Whedon first revealed his intention to introduce Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch during the red carpet of the Iron Man 3 world premiere and after confirming they are included in his first draft of The Avengers 2 screenplay, Bryan Singer one-upped him by announcing he’s going to use at least of them first in next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. The studios sharing the characters and bridging continuities doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

The Wrap has the scoop which indicates that Marvel Studios and writer-director Joss Whedon are already looking to cast the new “brother-sister act” joining Earth’s Mightiest for The Avengers 2, which begins filming next February, and that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the frontrunner for the role.

Aaron Johnson Ripped For Kick-Ass 2

No other shortlisted names are known but whether or not Johnson lands the part, if the news is true that he’s at least a contender it does mean that any hopes of Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Studios working together to share certain characters are shattered. Bryan Singer has Evan Peters playing Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Joss Whedon may or may not have Aaron Johnson play Quicksilver in his Avengers sequel. There’s still no word on who could be playing Scarlet Witch in either cinematic universe and we don’t even know if that character is part of Days of Future Past, although it would be strange for Singer to include one child of Magneto, but not the other.

Another interesting oddity is that it’s Matthew Vaughn – the man behind X-Men: First Class and the story of Days of Future Past - who was responsible for helping launch Johnson’s career in his own comic book movie, Kick-Ass, which of course has a sequel coming out later this year. It’s therefore an odd choice for Whedon to grab someone who’s just coming off of playing the titular hero in two comic book films, especially when the brand power behind The Avengers can be used to introduce another unfamiliar star who can be signed for a super-long-term deal with Marvel Studios.

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. Interesting choice. Have to admit, the only movie I’ve seen him in is Kick-Ass and I didn’t like it at all but he was pretty good in the role so if he does become Quicksilver, they’ve got a great guy.

  2. It would be great if they could get him, he’s very good. I agree with you Rob, it is somewhat strange to go after an actor from another superhero franchise. Hmmmmm……

In other Marvel news, any update on RDJ negotiations with Marvel Rob?

    • I’ve heard nothin new on Robby’s negotiations but I read an article on Screen Rant that yesterday that Joss Whedon is promising his return for Avengers 2 so im hoping that’s a confirmation.

      • I think we can be very confident of RDJ returning for Avengers 2, but the way I see it it’s looking pretty much a lock at this point that Tony Stark will die in that film.

Joss won’t be able to resist the temptation to kill off at least one Avenger (especially given that he’s promised ‘death’ already), RDJ doesn’t have his heart in it any more, Disney doesn’t want to have to renegotiate with him for an IM4 contract, it would make for a great story beat, and there’s some great symmetry there with Coulson presumably being back ‘from the dead’ for Avengers 2 and Tony facing up to that.

Calling it right now, two years out – Tony Stark dies in Avengers 2.

        • It would just be stupid on everyone’s part to let Tony die! As Feige said, there’s no reason why Iron Man can’t be evergreen! And, I can’t see RDJ giving up his hottest property!

          More expletives? Expletive.. expletive.. expletive!!!

          • I highly doubt they’ll do that. If they did, he’d have to come back somehow at some point.

            • Revive him as a new actor.

        • Cap should die in Avengers 2.

          • Cap died in Avenger 1.

(A little dry humor there. Parched, actually.)

      • Marvel needs RDJ and as much as they hate it Marvel has to pay him.
The negotiation is for the next two Avengers and in Downy’s case
a percentage of the gross is involved as well as percentages
from various disc and other forms of future viewing.

It takes time to hammer out such a deal and
right now it is accountants talking together
finalizing details acceptable to both sides.

    • 5%. Nuff said. LOL

  3. Yeah Fox… no deal!

Johnson is a very good pick if he gets it.

  4. A lot of times the first “attatched” name is not who ends up with the role. Since this is a speculation and not an announcement i wont hold my breath on it. Though it would be interesting tk see Johnson in a Marvel role, i dont know that Quicksilver is the right one for him.

  5. Ive been against many marvel castings this one however is a great choice

  6. Weren’t they both in “Kick Ass”?

I don’t really know what to make of all this. It does seem very odd to use the same characters in two rival films. People will constantly be comparing them.

    • Kick-Ass is hardly a rival to The Avengers. If anything, it promotes them because Kick-Ass and his friends are trying to emulate comic book superheroes.

      • Eh???

I meant “X-Men DOFP” and “Avengers 2″ using the same characters (Quicksilver and Scalett Witch).

The guy Fox has picked to play Quicksilver was in “Kick Ass”, as was Aaron Johnson.

  7. Aaron seems like a perfect fit. He can act too.
And can be quite charismatic when called upon.

    • I agree! He’s a pretty good fit I think.

  8. I don’t like this whole deal with the companies using two different versions of a character. One of them is going to suck, I just hope it isn’t Marvels. I wish Days Of Future Past well, but I’d rather an Avengers movie have more success.

    • It’s happened before in cinema, just never concurrently like this.

    • Yeah I’m with you man I want Avengers 2 to be better than DOFP

  9. He would make a great soldier, if I do say so my self.

    • The funny thing about that comment is that he’s playing a soldier in the new “Godzilla” movie.

  10. Is Johnson English I feel like I heard him with an english accent once if he is I guess it bodes well for Quicksilver.

    • English he is.

  11. I’m game. As long as Tony Stark calls him “Quick Ass” at some point in the movie.

    • Thumbs up lol.

      • Like, he grabs him after trying to escape Iron Man and is like, “Nice try, Quick Ass.”

  12. It’s funny, because these guys played comic book loving friends in Kick-ass. Screw it, they should make a movie about that plot right there. Two friends torn apart because of contrasting movie studios who chose them for their roles. Movie gold right there.

  13. Don’t like him.

  14. If the studios put this much thought into it, there could still be the crossover.

If there is no SW in DOFP than perhaps she pulls a House of M like stunt in the end of Avengers 2 that would allow the removal of one of 2 actors playing QS. It’s a long shot and I doubt that’s what will happen but may be the studios worked something out and are just going to bowl every one over with a big surprise. Here’s hoping.

    • Please….stop.

Marvel would like the X-Men back so would they help lend credibility to a company that controls THEIR characters??? (and is ruining them btw). Makes…..no….sense.

Marvel needs no help (citing IM3 and Avengers alone making nearly 3 BILLION between the two) while Fox’s “X-Mess” has collectively (5 movies) only grossed about half that. Of COURSE Fox wants a piece of that Marvel pie but it sure doesn’t help Marvel.

  15. I like Aaron, but this is such an uninspiring choice.

Aaron as Kick-ass 1 and the sequel this year, and on 2015 as Quicksilver? feels so inopportune and bad timing.

    • I don’t see the problem myself.

    • Agree I’m tired of seeing the same guys (Evans and Reynolds) do comic book movies. There are whole lot of other great actors for this role.

  16. his awesome in kick ass he would be a good choice

  17. I wish they’d just use different characters for both franchises instead of oversaturating us all with Quicksilver, mercury poisoning is no joke.

And how are they going to do the toy lines on this. We gonna get completely separate figures? There gonna be a bunch of Marvel Legends variants of him? Who knows

    • It doesn’t seem like that big a deal to me… one version is likely to eclipse the other anyway. Bring it on.

  18. Glad we are getting Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch for Avengers franchise. Now let’s get Wasp and Goliath in there as well!

  19. Good news. If indeed Saoirse Ronan does turn her hair ginger for the role (she’s the scarlett which after all), will they ask Aaron to bleach his white to do Quicksilver?
I can just imagine Joss Wheedon giving Aaron a bottle of the stuff with the initials J.M. (James Marsters) on them. Joss saying “worked awesome with a buddy of mine.”
But I wonder : is the choice to include Quicksilver in Avengers 2 a choice to counter/compete Justice League’s Flash?

    • To your second question: no, I don’t think so. Scarlet Witch can be one of the more powerful Marvel characters, and with Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet in the arc, the Avengers will need all the help they can get.

Not just that, but they weren’t exactly what you’d call heroes in the beginning, so they could add an interesting dynamic to the team.

  20. A biggest oddity: Evan Peters and Aaron Johnson’s characters were friends in Kick-Ass.

  21. GOOD….. any fan who thought it was a good idea to share characters and make fox
jacked up xmen universe same as MCU put a lid on it.

  22. As I mentioned above, I’m tired of seeing the same guys (Evans and Reynolds) do comic book movies. Sometimes the roles don’t even fit like Reynolds in Green Lantern. There are whole lot of other great actors for this role. Fallon suggested Channing Tatum to Whedon, and actually that wouldn’t be bad as he has been on a good streak lately picking up his first Critic’s nomination for 21 Jump street. My pick would be Critic’s nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. If not him maybe Garret Hedlund imo or just someone good who doesn’t do comic book movies over and over.

    • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has the perfect look for Aquaman.

Although they’d probably never do a solo movie, if they did a Justice League or team up he’d be the best choice in my opinion.

      • I think that dude has to be in a big budget comic book film someday.

  23. I really truly think Fox saw whedons comments about wanda and pietro being in avengers and just decided to squeeze them into dofp as a way to throw a wrench in marvels franchise. maybe they where hoping it would be way for fox xmen franchise to weasel into marvels avengers universe, but it turned out biting them in the as* because marvel probably hates them for using characters they wanted. outside of first class and the wolverine (which seems like it will be good) fox hasnt had a decent xmen movie since 2003. with such a convoluted franchise due to the crappy X3 and Origins and shuler-donners terrible understanding of comics and the x men, marvel will never join with them, even if hugh jackman on the avengers would be awesome.thats why fox is pathetically trying to create their own movie universe with also crappy fantastic four franchise.

    • Fox may try to throw a wrench, but it’ll miss. I have no doubt that Marvel’s version of both characters will be superior.

The Fantastic Four would be truly awesome and a lot of fun in capable hands.

    • I find it hard to believe that 1 day after whedon announces his plans fox cast quicksilver out of spite. Do you know how long it takes to cast? Also his script was done and filming was going on. Stop being biased people and look at the facts

      • Fox will also have a bit of an upper hand because they can have them being mutants and explore their parentage; ie: Magneto. It’s a shame Marvel won’t be able to delve into those plot points.

        • With the roster DoFP is boasting, there won’t be time to explore anything. In the end, who their parents are has little bearing on the characters themselves.

  24. I don’t believe for a minute that this isn’t Disney and Fox’s way of tricking everyone and making them forget about a cross over.

Too much money to be made along with too many strange coincidences(tons of characters to each use for them to both just happen to pick the same ones) going on for me to not believe they’re crossing over.

  25. I don’t believe for a minute that this isn’t Disney and Fox’s way of tricking everyone and making them forget about a cross over.

Too much money to be made along with too many strange coincidences going on for me to not believe they’re crossing over.

  26. Irony…. both were friends in Kick-Ass.

  27. I wanted him to be Spiderman after i saw kick ass. & the girl From Superbad (Not Emma, the other girl that throw up when they was bout to have sex at the end) to play mary jane.

  28. I really truly feel that Uwe Boll should direct any future Avengers or Marvel Films. Maybe they can offer him a package deal.

  29. Urg can people give it a rest with the whole marvel vs fox thing? Does anybody really think that the “quicksilver” in DoFP will amount to anything more than a cameo? Halle Berry aka Storm was on set of two days.. Pretty sure the alternate future scene or scenes won’t takr up much time in the film other than some epic scale battle. Been saying it from the start. Cameo in DoFP while for Avenger 2 the “quicksilver” character and his sister will be much more intergral to the plot and story arcs.

    • That’s what I’m thinking. Plus the siblings were announced to make an appearance pretty late in DoFP. If they played an integral part, they would have been announced sooner and they would be shooting already or something.

With the way it looks they may have a larger role in Avengers 2. And while I like the X-Men franchise from Fox (some movies more than others obviously), Marvel Studios just made better versions of comic characters form the start.

Both versions have a potential to be great.

DoFP does have Magneto in it, but I still agree that Wanda and Pietro will probably only have cameos there.
