Scarlet Witch Costume X Men Legends 2 The Avengers 2: Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch

[Update: Aaron Taylor-Johnson is also unofficially confirmed for Quicksilver]

With Thor: The Dark World releasing in theaters next month and Guardians of the Galaxy in its final stretch of principal photography, next on the production slate for Marvel Studios is the flagship title The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Joss Whedon written and directed sequel begins production early next year for a May 2015 release date.

And not unlike then next few chapters (post-Iron Man 3) of “Phase Two” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Avengers 2 aims to expand the franchise by adding a few new characters. The brutally villainous Ultron takes center stage as the antagonist for Earth’s Mightiest and on the hero side, the roster of The Avengers will grow with the additions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, a super-powered brother-sister act.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the mastermind behind the formation of The Avengers as a fighting force to protect Earth, made a cameo in Marvel Studios’ first foray into live-action television this week, in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The episode-saving guest appearance didn’t help the show against a ratings drop of 34% from its premiere, but it did give the Wall Street Journal a reason to chat with Jackson who in turn confirmed one of the expected Avengers 2 casting choices - something Marvel Studios and Disney have been waiting on making official.

Elizabeth Olsen Scarlet Witch Rumor The Avengers 2: Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch

Not unlike the announcements of Bradley Cooper joining Guardians of the Galaxy and James Spader playing the titular Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, an official confirmation of Olsen joining the franchise will likely be made through Marvel’s own website, it’s just a matter of timing to separate out announcements for their upcoming projects. In the meantime, Sam L is doing the work for them:

“I don’t think we begin shooting before March of next year. I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.”

We previously reported on Elizabeth Olsen being in talks with Marvel and her interest in working with Robert Downey Jr., but nothing on the casting front is official. Olsen told MTV at the Toronto International Film Festival last month that she’d love to sign up but played coy as to the rumors of her being talks for the part.

“I’ve been rumored about lots of things [so] I don’t know… To be part of [The Avengers]? Sure. I grew up loving comic books and sci-fi… I think those movies are great. I would love to do something like that.”

Not only does the (magically powered) Scarlet Witch character need to be cast, but so does her (super fast) brother Quicksilver, who Aaron Taylor-Johnson has long been in talks for. Guardians of the Galaxy still needs to cast its Groot as well, a role Vin Diesel has been talking up since Comic-Con. Last but not least, director Edgar Wright revealed yesterday that he’s returning to Los Angeles after finishing his press tour for The World’s End to being pre-production on his long-in-development Ant-Man movie for Marvel, another project that will need to be cast in the coming months.

  1. How cool do you feel when you comment first?

    • …and you spoiled your victory with a non-comment comment. :-/

    • Should be Kate Beckinsale

  2. dont know how I feel about her, in her defence I havent seen any of her movies just going purely off looks but who knows im probable way off.

    • defense*

      • Defence** I’m Aussie.

        • oh whellp.

    • She was phenomenal in “Martha Marcy May Marlene”. If you wanna see her acting chops watch this film. I think she might be a better choice than Ronan honestly. She was also great in this little horror film she stared in but the film its self isnt to hot.

  3. shes lacking in a certain area where Scarlet Witch isn’t

    • Pfft, females in comics are created in a way that no female on earth can visual represent them

      • It’s not just females.
When is the last time you saw an average build super hero. Never. They’re all so sexy dammit.

      • ‘Most common superpower’ – massive rack.

      • Linda Carter did a pretty good job of it.

    • Height? Preference for lime Gatorade over fruit punch? Love of Ukranian dub-step?

    • Cello skills?

      • @ Rob

Only the geekiest of geeks caught that reference in Avengers.

        • Will they go that route?…

    • What do you mean, bewbz? You need some big ol’ titties in your Avengers movies?? Yeah, you’re right, that’s the most important thing… huge knockers. Gotta have ‘em. ;)

    • Isn’t she like 4-feet tall? And that’s in heels. I don’t know about this.

      • She’s 5′ 4″ and a half, to be exact. She’s taller than Scarlet Johanssen who is 5′ 3″.

        • 5’4″? Not exactly fun-sized, but still too short.

          Taller than Johanssen? Irrelevant.

I’m sure Olsen will do fine in the role. I’m relying on “movie magic” to do wonders for her stature.

    • Ttiitts a wonder no other bubes have noticed this before!

      • Think phonetical (durn spam-blocker)!

  4. A certain Ben Kendrick is probably very happy to hear that. :D

  5. She’ll do well if she gets it.

  6. This makes sense since she’s Quicksilver’s sister. And I agree with the comments above, every superhero is disproportionilized (that’s my big word for the day) in some form or another.

    • If you don’t believe me, look at Kid Flash New 52 in Teen Titans. He has muscles where there shouldn’t be.

      • on his earlobes?

  7. She’s gonna do just fine. I saw her on Jimmy Kimmel the other night, and I thought…

Pink headband, next to ATJ, and RDJ? Eye-candy and presence.

  8. I had to look up Scarlet Witch. I am unfamiliar with her.
If her presence in the next Avengers is designed to be a
draw she is not drawing me. Her presence seems forced as
part of a motivation to add another “strong female character”.

    • Well, read the comics and then judge. Is adding another “strong female character” the reason they added her to the Avengers in the 1960′s? Did they “force it” for the last 50+ year? Seriously, educate yourself before you make a comment about something you’re admittedly unfamiliar with.

      • I have no interest in reading the comics.
I was talking about the film, sunshine.
She is being forced in the movie.

        Thanks for insults.

        • It wasn’t an insult, it was a plea to educate yourself before you blindly bash something that you know nothing about. I suppose then Ultron is being “forced” into the movie as well?

          • Telling me to educate myself, and repeatedly, is are condescending insults.
I did look into her character profile and I’m not impressed. Period.
It is a perfectly valid point of view. Sorry you don’t like it.

I was not blindly bashing anything. If you were not so
hyper-sensitive toward any contrary view you might
learn be able to respect the views of other people.

You like Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.
Well good for you. I am not impressed.

And Ulron has nothing to do with this.

            • How can you have a valid point of view about something you know nothing about? Now I’m not impressed.

              • Well, I am not impressed with you, FILTHpig.
Although I would say your screen name fits.

                • :(

                  • Bro, I think that’s an awesome username :-)

                    • Thanks… Ministry fan?

                • Nice job at failing in an argument FILTHpig.

                  • Really, so after reading all that tell me again how Marvel/Whedon is forcing Scarlet Witch into the movie, without seeing the movie or reading the script… or even a damn comic book.

Pure speculation is not fact and you can’t hide behind your “valid opinion” when you’re completely clueless about the subject.

                    • I’m with you on this one FILTHpig. It’s sort of annoying when people who have never read the stories they’re pulling the characters from try to say what will work and what won’t.

If you are admittedly unfamiliar with the source material, kindly sit in the back of the class and wait for the movie to come out. Enjoy it or don’t. The opinions of people like you carry no weight because you aren’t the people that made these characters popular in the first place. You can thank the rest of us for these movies even existing.

                    • Thanks, you summed it up rather well. Hopefully people actually read your statement instead of screaming “you’re rude!” as a way of getting out of the discussion they clearly have little to no knowledge about.

                  • Palmer finished the argument by insulting filthpig’s name so how did filthpig fail?

        • Don’t you think it’s a little early to say whether or not she’s being forced into the movie? based on your comment I assume you don’t know a lot about the character so the only other possible way you could make a statement like that (and still want to be taken seriously) is if you’ve read the script… which I assume you haven’t.

@FILTHpig could have gone about making his point without the (kinda-sorta) rudeness, but he’s not that far off imo.

          • I do not need to to told a fact I admitted.
I did say was unfamiliar with her up front.

Just like about 99% of the movie going audience
for this film hence my point her not being a draw.

            • I think you’re underestimating a large percent of the audience.

              • What we have here is failure to communicate.
Just avoid me. I’ll be avoiding you. That was easy.

                • Nope, I understand you just fine; and I will avoid you… at least until you make another ignorant comment about something you (admittedly) know nothing about.

                  • Another insult. You can’t help yourself, can you?
You don’t understand me which is understandable.
My comment was not ignorant proving you cannot.

                    • Ugh, you’re so sensitive today. I meant ignorant as in lacking knowledge or awareness of a subject. In this case, Scarlet Witch. Toughen up a bit, Robby!

                    • Go ahead and what you want. I do not give a damn.
Whatever you need to feel god about yourself, FILTHY.

                    • *good
                      although god fits too.

                    • And here I thought you were avoiding me…

                    • You didn’t play. You didn’t avoid me.
You can’t. You have a immature mentality
projecting your sensitivity to those you disagree.

Now this is goodbye, and not just to you.
Insult me all you want. I won’t be reading.

                    • Whatever, dude, I enjoyed our discussion. Sorry you didn’t have the stomach for it.

            • @Robert Palmar
The thing is, no one said she would be a “draw”. That’s you making an assumption.
Saying Scarlet Witch’s presence is to draw people to the movie is comparable to saying people went to see the first Avengers movie because Hawkeye, Maria Hill and Black Widow drew them in (although admittedly, a solid argument can be made that ScarJo’s boobs got a lot of dudes into seats… but I digress).
The real “draw” of these movies, as we all know, are characters like Hulk, Thor and Iron Man, and the actors who portray them.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go make a few sentences that don’t include the word “draw” ;)

              • I don’t know anything about the comics either and I think she sounds sweet. She’ll definitely be a draw. People love a good female hero. Get with it.

            • I don’t want to get wrapped up in this argument, but you said she wasn’t a draw. With a film like “The Avengers”, which stars Robert Downey Jr. in any kind of flying suit, the studio doesn’t have to worry about anyone else being a draw.

            • Might I interject that I would like to be familiar with her front?

        • she ain’t got big boob’s, but if she can tough it out in the acting it’s her legend and cash

      • Obvious opinion is obvious.

And don’t worry Mr Palmar, I get the sense from a lot of his comments (especially against you today) that FILTH may in fact be a troll. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so damn rude to everybody.

I also think they’re trying to force SW and QS in but then again, none of us know the plot for the sequel so until we know much more about it, your opinion is very valid, as is the opinion that they aren’t being forced into the plot. It’s middle ground right now and who knows whether they’ll end up being the most important things in the movie or just visual garnish to add to the main meal.

        • Considering the legal loop-holes that these characters have to jump through in order to appear in the MCU gives me the forced impression aswell.

I’ve said this plenty of times on this subject, but I still don’t understand why Marvel Studios is insisting on using characters in which they are forced to follow parameters set by another company. Why draw attention to that?

          • There may be some impetus to establish them (in the minds of general audiences) before FOX has a chance to. I could see that. They are also essentially putting “Flash” into a live action movie, by using Quicksilver (I know there are differences, but I’m speaking generally here), so maybe they’re beating DC to the punch. That’s less likely but might be part of it.

Honestly, I’m excited about the characters and think they have tremendous potential. And Joss Whedon has already said that he likes them because their powers are different than the rest, which he called “punchy” and “shoot-y” powers. I don’t think they’d be adding them for the sole reason to screw FOX or DC. They are longtime members from fairly early, but I also think they will prove to be interesting characters.

          • Fox’s movies don’t matter. Whether you measure by popularity, financially, overall quality or otherwise, Marvel Studios has them beat in every way. Marvel is definitely not competing with a lesser version of themselves.

            • Wrong. Check the ratings and money made of Foxs X films, you’ll find that Foxs has done better, in terms of money and critical reaction, not your opinion, than Marvel in a few movies. On my phone so can’t check right now, but X2 has a better rating and made more money than The Incredible Hulk for example. I also believe Thor and Captain Amerecia are below a couple of X films in ratings and I think Cap also is lower in cash made. Google it, you might be surprised to find your in the minority when it comes to the X-Men film franchise.

              • ^^^
wow. Overall filthpig is dead right about this. Nobody cares about the fox movies compared to the marvel movies.

                • Sorry, I’ve had to explain to plenty of people that X-men movies aren’t “MARVEL” movies. It’ only us “nobodies” who even know the difference. Step out of your bubble sometime.

X-men movies are more than big enough, plenty well known, that if they prominently featured SW and QS, that would make it essentially impossible for Marvel to develop the same characters, with different actors and (presumably) different costumes. The vast majority of audience would not be able to understand what was going on, so essentially Marvel is making a claim for these characters here, before FOX can get around to it.

                  • ah ha… so you DO have an opinion on it, don’t you?

                    • It’s wishy-washy. I can see the need to “claim” the characters fairly quickly, because if they wait, Fox could include them in a movie before the next Avengers. I think the X-movies are well known enough that if they included the characters (prominently), it would block Marvel from using them.

But I also think they are great characters I don’t think there would have to be any arm-twisting to include them. Joss Whedon seems genuinely excited about them and I can understand why. I like the casting and the news, but we’ll have to wait and see the final product.

        • It seems to me that FILTHpig failed to understand that Robert used to not know about scarlet witch, but since then he’s read up on her, and he still isn’t impressed. Some people like FILTHpig just can’t recognize obvious statements.

          • Wow, he took two seconds to read Marvel Wiki or whatever… that’s obviously not whole story. The guy doesn’t even like comics or comic book movies, that much is clear. And that’s fine, but at least admit it.

            • He said he knows nothing about comic books. We are talking about movies. His opinion is as valid as anyone else’s. IM3 proved the comics are irrelevant to characters in these films. It was a fair question asking why Scarelt Witch when we still don’t have Wasp. As someone who loved comics, it should be a good question, why the witch before the wasp?

              • Probably because Ant-Man has yet to be introduced. Plus you can’t shove everyone into a single movie and expect it to be good (see Fox). I’m sure they just decided to go this route because that is where the story lead them. Which is the opposite of forcing something when you think about it.

    • I agree with you, Rocko.

I like Scarlet Witch in the X-Men Universe. The one that is the daughter of Magneto and alters the comic universe in one swipe.

We won’t see that in Avengers. A waste of a character if you ask me.

      • Say thanks, Leather. :D

Before your reply I decided to avoid all Marvel threads.
By the way, the middle name is spelled Rocco and thanks for remembering.

        • Sorry for the spelling mistake, Rocco. I shall never forget. Mark my words!

I almost posted my opinion to this in the OD to avoid controversy but whatever, Ill take it.

          • I know what you mean, LC. Thanks for diving in.
You never know when you step into one of these
and it kind of spoils the whole experience of posting.
OD is a lot more civilized and safer to avoid this stuff.

        • Rock is with a K though. I see where you got that.

      • Your point of Scarlet Witch in the X-Men Universe is well-taken.
There is the feeling of just what the hell is she doing in this movie.
I do think Joss was reaching for a strong female character and picked her.

      • The X-Men have nothing to do with this. The scarlet Witch has been an Avenger for decades, the Vision (an Avenger) was her husband. The Vision was created by Ultron. The new Avengers movie is titled Age of Ultron. Connect the dots. This character will fit in just fine, and shouldn’t seem forced at all. Especially considering her rich history with the Avengers.

        • You sure are being feisty and defensive this morning…

          • Well, I’m just speaking the truth. Maybe Joss will screw up and SW will seem forced. Based on the past movies and comics, I don’t think that will be the case. I guess that’s my main point. We shall see. I honestly wasn’t trying to be rude, so don’t take it the wrong way.

            • I agree with you FILTHpig. SW has been in Avengers for a long time, and regardless, she could (I’ll qualify it same as you) be an amazing character.

Really, SW and Quicksilver have me looking forward to Avengers 2 more than anything else. The whole brother-sister thing, QS being overprotective of SW. Also, I think they are going to make her mentally fragile. My guess, and E. Olsen would be perfect for that.

    • Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch is a very important character in Avengers lore. There are many other Avengers that would have to be forced in to make a film appearance, but she isn’t one of them. She’s especially important since Avengers 2 involves Ultron, who creates the Vision (another great Avenger), Wanda’s love interest. I’m very interested to see where it all goes.

  9. “Not only does the (magically powered) Scarlet Witch character need to be cast,…”

“Guardians of the Galaxy still needs to cast its Groot as well,…”

This confuses me. Aren’t both confirmed already?

    • Not officially. They still need to be announced by marvel themselves. Kind of like how Doctor Strange isn’t officially confirmed but alot of internet sites talk about it as if it were a done deal already.

    • Nope, not officially. Neither are “confirmed” by Disney-Marvel… Yet :)

  10. Any chance this could be a diversion for a possible Wasp casting? She strikes me as more fitting for that role than Scarlet Witch, at least from the few photos I’ve seen of her.

    • Doubt it. She’ll be SW.

  11. I don’t know much about Scarley Witch and I do know Elizabeth Olson so I’m happy with this.

    • All you really need to know about Scarlett Witch is this:

When she’s around, you can get away with anything you want, kill every single character if you wanted too, and all Scarlett Witch has to do is decide she wants everything back the way it was, and VOILA!…

      …it’s like nothing ever happened.

Exactly why I’m completely unimpressed with the topic of “who will die in Avengers 2?” The truth is, having the Witch around guarantees that nothing is final. Nothing. She waves her hands, declares BACK ALL THINGS, and that’s that.
And nothing is final already in Marvel so… yeah.

      • Thanks for the insight Doc! Sounds interesting but if that’s case, I’m hoping her powers are dumbed down a bit.

        • Don’t get me wrong, with the Scarlett Witch the potential is there for some wicked looking sequences where say… something very large is falling on a group of people and Scarlett Witch can stop it by doing a wide variety of things-

-change the location of the people
-change the rate at which the object is falling
          -turn the object into snowflakes

huh, the more I think about it, the more I realize Scarlett Witch= Sexy Dr. Manhattan…

…except whenever Scarlett decides to use her power (usually following a large exposition for all the reasons why she shouldn’t) it drains her considerably, usually to the point of her passing out for awhile.

Keep in mind, when you can “re-write reality” you have the power to do virtually anything.

  12. @Rob, I think Vin himself confirmed that he is indeed playing Groot….

    • @ 50:00

  13. This is awesome casting. I saw her in that multiple female names that start with “M” movie (which is a great movie BTW), and she is a very good actress.

Honestly I’ve probably always been distracted by the way she’s drawn, but as I’ve thought about it, SW has a lot of potential as a character. They shouldn’t even try to make her fit the “proportions” of the comics. Just get a good actress who is reasonably good looking. Done and done.

  14. I like Olsen. I think shes a fine actress with potential.
This character though, I’m not so sure I like her presence, along with Quicksilver .

I mean, the Avengers barely had enough screen time for everybody(don’t worry Hawkeye). Scarlet, Qucksilver coming in with a new villain
I’m just getting a little worried it might get too stuffed.

  15. Bewitch me, baby!

  16. Hope Avengers #3 has Goliath and Wasp!

  17. We greatly need more female superpower on the Avengers team. Scarlet Witch is a good start. And Olsen seems fine to me.

Now if we can just get Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and She-Hulk on there, I would be in hog heaven.

    • Yep, Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel is a must! At least at some point in the future.

  18. I remember when i was younger and there were no live action movies really out and now everyone has some gripe about something. Cant you just enjoy seeing these characters in a movie?

    • Yep, I know what you mean. Many people are really abusing freedom of speech nowadays :(

    • Well, we also didn’t really have our own personal soapboxes like we do today. I’m sure that if we did, there would have been a lot more griping back then.

    • +1
      Thank you.

  19. Personally, I think Olsen has already gotten the role but Marvel is waiting for Aaron Taylor-Johnson to agree with Quicksilver so that they can announce both at the same time. They ARE twins and should be treated equally and officially announced at the same time right? *looking at Fox*

    • Oh, and I’m really curious about her super-skill and how it will be shown/translated on screen. Reading the Wiki and all, still left me puzzled in what Scarlet Witch abilities are…
But if they relate her appearance with Coulson’s revival, it would definitely be awesome! “Tahiti, it’s a magical place” “Yep, you’ve said that”

      • She had a “mutant hex power” but also was skilled with regular magic. The hex power is harder to explain/portray, because it was basically an ability to alter probability fields…unlikely things would happen. For example a badguy was running away down the street, she could send a “hex bolt” in his direction and a piece of the wall would fall down and knock him out.

Later on her powers were amplified, and when she had a serious mental breakdown after the death of her kids, she basically wished away nearly all the mutants in the world, instantaneously converting them to non-powered humans, and altered reality in other ways as well.

  20. Y’all know she’s just gonna be some watered down version of her comic counterpart. I wouldn’t get too exited.

  21. I’m not feeling this one.

All the hero’s (in the comics) go gaga over the SW, does this actress really have the sex appeal needed for this role? Michelle Keegan seems like a natural. I could even see Megan Fox cast; Perhaps Marvel is looking for a stronger actress to pull off those stiff android / robotic love scenes in Avengers 3.

  22. I happen to like Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver as well in the comics. I am also hoping for Goliath and Wasp soon. I think they all need to be up there in The Avengers movies.

  23. Some of you must really be attracted to the olsons or hathaways of cinema
To be ogling over them. They are pretty but scarlet witch and black cat are gorgeous volumptous women like johannson. Should have left scarlet and quicksilver out if they were not going to get older actors for the film, marvel
Is going to be getting these cats for 300k (peanuts in movies) a piece.

  24. Surprise twist shes she hulk and not scarlet witch, lol.

  25. Christina Hendricks could have filled the role well, or at least the costume.

    • True, true indeed – 10 years ago.

  26. I never thought Screen Rant would start allow trolls free reign. Just why were the insults tolerated? Is this place no longer moderated? I have been a reader and not a poster here and I have noticed the change. The people who attracted Mr. Palmar need to improve their reading comprehension skills. He said he had no interest in reading comics about Scarlet Witch, not comics in general and I have read his posts on many comic titles. I hope he hasn’t left since I love reading his posts.

    • “attacked” Mr. Palmar, not “attracted”. Spellcheck? Plus start to allow not start allow. Sorry about that.

    • Don’t you worry… The Rock isn’t swayed so easily, he was just a bit perturbed early.

      • *earlier.

        *ahem*

      • Thanks :D

You are right, Good Doctor, I would not let someone,
such as the hopelessly dense FILTHpig cause me to leave.
My tolerance for he and his minions in this thread,
is near zero these days and hence disengagement was called for.

    • Why thank you Dona. How very sweet of you to object to some
“replies” to me in this thread and especially for your noticing me.
When I said “goodbye, and not just to you” I meant not just
FILTHpig but this thread itself as far as commenting again.

Don’t be put off to posting here, and the site is well-moderated
but I shall admit that lately there have been a few bona fide
trolls, such as FILTHpig spoiling the friendly exchanges.

  27. Thanks for exposing your true nature with your hysterical little rant.
I do understand your defensiveness at being exposed for who you are.

    • @FILTHpig & Robert – This sure escalated quickly.

Filth, while what you about “educating yourself” to Robert early on may not have been intended as a put down or insult, there was a tone about the statement that makes it come across that way. You can disagree with someone without being antagonistic.

Robert, as I stated above, I DO understand how you could read his initial comment as insulting but truthfully, I don’t think he meant it that way – at least, not in THIS particular instance.

I’ve removed the last two comments posted by both of you as neither applied to the topic of this post.

If necessary, it might just be best to avoid responding to each other for a while so the comment threads don’t get hijacked.

      Thanks for your understanding.
