The Avengers 2 Teaser: First Look At Ultron Design From Comic-Con

Published 2 years ago by , Updated March 7th, 2014 at 1:58 pm,

Coinciding with the release of Iron Man 3 on home video this week – and the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC – Marvel released a free app for iOS devices titled JARVIS: A Second Screen Experience. Featuring the voice of JARVIS from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Paul Bettany, the app uses voice recognition to let users interact with the apps features and unlock additional content hidden away on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray.

Some rumors and speculation even had Marvel releasing this app to eventually be used as a source of viral marketing come time for The Avengers: Age of Ultron where the Ultron AI (the villain of the sequel) could take over the app. While that rumor is far off, the app does actually tease The Avengers sequel in a big way.

Official JARVIS app description:

Ever wonder what it’s like to be Tony Stark? Download the one-of-a-kind, interactive experience app hosted by JARVIS to your iPad or iPhone and find out. Just like the real JARVIS, you will be able to interact with him using your own voice. Create customized alarms to wake you in the morning, download ringtones, check the weather, post to Facebook and more! Sync the app to your Blu-ray player to unlock hidden files and suits embedded throughout the disc, and experience the first-ever voice controlled Blu-ray!

In addition to unlocking details and images on the many armor suits from Iron Man 3, users can unlock the official teaser trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron that played exclusively at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, the one which features Iron Man’s armor taking the shape of Ultron as the official title for the sequel was first revealed to the world. That teaser trailer (up top) offers some interesting hints about the origins of the next villain Earth’s Mightiest heroes will face off against.

Writer and director Joss Whedon had planned for Ultron to be the villain of The Avengers 2 while he was working on the first one, and there was even an eerie scene hinting that JARVIS could have something to do with Ultron’s creation that was cut from the film. Whedon has since confirmed that since the character of Ant-Man won’t be introduced until after The Avengers: Age of Ultron that Ultron’s origins will be entirely original (Hank Pym aka Ant-Man created Ultron in Marvel Comics). Ultron was also never a part of Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man script. This led us to believe that perhaps Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) could be responsible for his creation since obviously his armor has a big part to play in Ultron’s physical form and he’s the guy who builds and utilizes AI in his armored suits and lab – this would also give him the motivation for suiting up again after essentially tossing his armor out at the end of Iron Man 3.

The Avengers 2 Ultron Face First Look Teaser Trailer The Avengers 2 Teaser: First Look At Ultron Design From Comic Con

That AI we know so well from The Avengers and the Iron Man trilogy is of course JARVIS (Paul Bettany) and we speculated that perhaps JARVIS could go rogue. With James Spader being cast as Ultron for The Avengers sequel, it’s not going to be that simple of a story – it never is – and Ultron’s cinematic origins remain a mystery. There could be ties to magic (from Scarlet Witch who’s also going to be introduced in the film) to the cosmos (to be explored in Guardians of the Galaxy) but JARVIS and Iron Man do have some part to play, regardless.

The Ultron design is seemingly not only faithful to the Marvel Comics design, but is an exact adaptation of it, which makes us curious as to the potential different versions of him in the film and how they’re going to have Ultron emote and go beyond Spader’s voice. Does the Age of Ultron teaser trailer excite you?

  1. Not too shabby

  2. OH SH*T!!! Looks awesome!

  3. Yes, I am excited. Age of Ultron also adds a greater depth of story to Iron Man 3, as if that even requires mentioning…

And did anyone else notice that Tony Stark has been getting gradually MEANER to Jarvis? I mean, I know Jarvis isn’t “alive” but still, take notice of their interactions especially in Iron Man 3, Tony seemed to grow increasingly condescending toward Jarvis.

    • a super advanced AI cant protect his house from 2 missles and sends him flying to another state because he had told it to make a flight plan hours earlier. then shuts off once he gets there…. yeaa…. id be mean to him to. ugh i really hated that movie.

      • +1

    • Tony is treating Jarvis less as a computer and more as a person/friend. Also notice that Jarvis seems to be making his own decisions and we all know that self-aware, self-motivating AI in fiction always means DEATH TO THE HUMANS.

      • “AI”…”Artificial Intelligence”–Definition: what my bosses at Wal-Mart purportedly have.

  4. Not bad… close to the comic book. James Spader is doing the voice right?

    • He is. At first I thought “The guy from Pretty in Pink? Really?” but after seeing him in “The Blacklist”, I was sold.

      • The Blacklist is great. Spader is going to own this role!

        • Blacklist…saw pilot last night, not bad…I’ll follow that one. Agents of Shield and Sleepy Hollow are worth a look, too, folks.

  5. Still kinda bothers me that people act so certain of the whole Tony, Jarvis, Ultron thing. Just seems like such a stupid presumption to make at this point when there’s still three more movies to go that could add any other number of details that could change the course of things, not to mention plenty of statements since comic con that things wouldn’t be as cut-and-dry as that.

    • Nah, I don’t think anyone’s certain of that – story cannot be that simple.

  6. Teaser looks pretty badass! Expectations are high for this Avengers!

  7. Impressive….yet I feel slightly gypped out of the Thanos storyline implied at the end of the first Avengers flick…

    • Nothing specific was implied. You inferred it.

    • Thanos will be a big event. He is working in the background of several movies (and foreground in Guardians). It will take several movies to get to a face to face with him (Avengers 3).

      • Be nice if they brought in Skrulls, Kang, Radioactive Man, Titanium Man, The Crimson Dynamo, Whirlwind, Diablo, a real Mandarin, and the whole Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Seven Dwarfs to battle The Avengers for #3!

        • In the comics, it would happen, but the Skrulls are considered ‘Fantastic Four’ villains so they won’t be seen in A2…maybe the Kree. As for Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo…I have hopes that there will be a Iron-Man 4, and the storyline- the ARMOR WARS.

  8. I saw another site who reported that Ultron is being created by the government as a response to either replace the Avengers or to be used in case the Avengers become a problem….possibly based on stolen Start Technology.

It might also give them a backdoor later on to say that Hank Pym might have been one of the developers without having to have him in the movie and still allow for the correct origin story at some point.

    • Makes sense.

    • I like that, except for the fact that if it was to replace the Avengers, Ultron would be created by SHIELD, not by any government.

  9. Ominous…I like it.

  10. The Leader creates Ultron!!!!

The Leader possesses knowledge of genetics, physics, and robotics, and has designed a large number of sophisticated weapons, vehicles, computers, androids, and synthetic humanoids.(wiki)

    • Leader was captured by SHIELD and has been forced to pump out advanced weapons, tech (helicarrier) and Life Model Decoys (Coulson)

    • Can’t agree. Leader is too much of a big villain to share the stage. Same with Ultron. Ultron wouldn’t be much of a threat if the Leader is also fighting the Avengers.

      • He couldn’t fight anyone from inside a SHIELD cell. I doubt he’ll be in the movie at all, anyway.

@Comment: Please explain how knowledge in genetics would be useful in creating a robot?

  11. Nice !

  12. That was cool.

  13. What about an android version?

    • +1

  14. I was so hoping Ultron would say a line or something in this real quick like the first dark knight teaser damn

    • “I’ll be back!” (no, Schwartzenwhanger has that one).
“I am Groot!” (naw, that’s taken too by the Roto-Rooter Man).
I know: “Pop Goes The Weasel!” (aw, nuts, think Congress has that….).

      • “We are the robots!” (nope, Kraftwerk trademark)

  15. I’m so excited. and This teaser is telling us something: That STARK DOES have SOMETHING to do with Ultron’s orgins, if not by choice, then being a pawn. It’s gonna be intense and amazing.

    3 films to go!

    • Stark has left plenty of tech lying around and plenty of people have hacked it as well. Guess he’s not perfect. At a minimum someone will use found/infiltrated Start tech to create Ultron. If you have seen some of the deleted scenes from Avengers you know that Jarvis was trying to psych Tony out saying he was too good for them.

  16. If you have not see the movie yet, IRON MAN 3 SPOILERS

I think someone else will build Ultron using the pieces of Stark’s 40 some odd Iron Man suits he left in little pieces at the docks, making Tony ultimately responsible but not directly.

    • It might be reading into it too much, but Ultron seemed to be creating himself in that teaser.

      • Well he is AI. That is how he improves himself in the comics. Why not create himself as well right from the beginning.

      • My thought is Jarvis feels he needs to create Ultron as a means since Stark destroyed his suits. It could seem as if Jarvis is doing the world a favor in the absence of Iron Man and may think he is bigger and better than The Avengers. Remember that one sketch where Jarvis tells Stark he is better than the others.

        • That’s non-canon. It was cut from the movie for a reason. Probably because Avengers is already loaded with unnecessary conflict between the characters.

          • That doesn’t mean you can’t add it in the sequel.

          • Unnecessary conflict? Really? You feel The Avengers would have been a better movie if the team came together as a cohesive whole from the very start? Personally I find any movie/tv show/book/comic without conflict very boring. Not saying the team needs to always be fighting, but would you buy Tony Stark doing everything Fury tells him without question? There needs to be conflict. The way the characters are set up demand it.

            • Yeah, particularly Tony. And Banner. That Cap wouldn’t raise an eyebrow is more understandable, but certainly not Tony, especially considering how wary of SHIELD he’s been since day one.

      • Oh, a self-made man, hmmm?

        • “Self-made man”….sounds like my last date.
My life is all wine, women, and song, lately….
No matter how much I “wine” all the women tell me to go sing it elsewhere!
I know I’m not getting any younger, but it’s pretty bad when my last date was a carbon-date!

          • @Goldilocks

  17. Wasn’t Nanotech being used in a previous Hulk movie (Hulk 1?). Could Ultron come from a combination of Tony (AI) and Banner (Nano) tech from them screwing around in Tony’s candyland tech shop after Avengers 1?

    • Ang Lee’s Hulk was the film that used Nanomeds. Other than that I don’t recall anything related.

      • Yeah, The Incredible Hulk was a soft reboot that ignored everything that happened in Ang Lee’s movie.

        • Soft reboot?

          • As in “not declared as such.” Anyway, Ang Lee’s Hulk was somewhat lame and it’s officially out of the MCU canon, so they won’t use anything from it.

  18. Avengers 2 is gonna suck big time

  19. unless it unlocks an entirely different I.E. good version of the movie then I couldn’t care less.God tat movie makes me physically ill

    • I thought Avengers sucked too.

Oh….you meant IM3. Sorry. Maybe the app will unlock some decent taste in movies for you too. Or something to stop you hopping on ridiculous bandwagons to appear cool to others.

IM3 was great and you’re a fool to think otherwise.

      • +1

        • You know, I agree with you but you don’t have to shout to expose your ideas. It’s considered rude in online forums just as it’s rude in real life.

  20. At least he wont look like Amazo hopefully. I sill think this movie will tank

  21. jesus…i cant wait

    • if anyone knows of a app for android post it dont be shy

      • They need to do it! An Ultron app for Android would be insanely fitting, just like Webb’s name for Spider-Man.

  22. I love the teaser. Why do we assume this is Jarvis? It’s a cool idea. I just don’t get that from the teaser. Did someone confirm its Jarvis going rogue? I’m still hoping Pym is involved in some way. Have him show up as Giant Man and squash Ultron if nothing else. We can see the Ant Man story as a time period before Avengers 2. Just my mind running….

    • Just because it’s an Iron Man helmet that turns into Ultron’s head. And since Ultron is an AI and the Iron Man suits can be controlled by JARVIS who is also a self-improving AI. So yeah, only that.

If Ultron is really based on Starktech, then JARVIS has to be part of it somehow, since he’s like the most advanced AI there is.

    • Works for me. I love Giant-Man/Goliath. Want him sooner than soon if not before.

    • It´s been confirmed that Pym won´t be the creator of Ultron. And he won´t be in Avengers 2 either.

  23. I can only imagine the intensity in that room after Ultron was revealed.

  24. Was the Mark 42 armour fully destroyed, as I only remember it crashing when Stark called it to himself to fight the (fake) Mandarin in the final battle. Could that have something to do with Ultrons creation. Someone above mentioned that Ulton could create himself and this might be possible from the Mark 42 pieces that were lying around but not destroyed. Just a theory…….

    • SPOILERS! !!!!!!!

Stark attached it to Killian and told Jarvis to self-destruct the Mark 42.

    • Stark destroyed the Mark 42 with Killian inside it. (watched the movie last night)

      • Oh yeah, I forgot that. There goes my input to the Ulton origin theories. Saw it opening night and not since. Thanks guys :)

      • Watching it in about 10 minutes…hope it doesn’t suck (except for the Mandarin thing that is Hoover Supreme sucking so hard my forehead collapses!).

        • It doesn´t suck.

          • I concur. It’s better than IM2 actually, but the fanboys are still whining about it because it torn apart their psychorigid vision of the Mandarin and Extremis.

            • ^^^

            • Maybe because they pretty much ruined Extremis. I dont think you guys understand how freakin awesome Tony Stark becomes because of extremis. The man interfaces with satellite networks just by thinking. All that cool potential is out the door.

  25. Not to be really…… what’s the word… prickish? but…

Ultron’s suit is a derivative of IM’s? Now in IM3 – it was clearly shown that all of IM’s suits were made of tin foil and very easily destroyed.

So why would I think Ultron is scary when all I have to do is push him down a flight of stairs to defeat him?

    • Cause u dont no the full story…if it were that easy would they make the movie about him? No obviously. Ultrons prob gonna update the armor to full vibrainium i suspect.

      • Adamantium. He upgraded his body with adamantium in the comics.

    • Umm? Was it? Plenty of examples from IM1, IM2 and The Avengers show that Starks suits are actually really powerful. The suits in the final battle of IM3 were all on automatic and fighting enemies that were super strong and could disable the suits electronics by touching them.

The Mark 42 kept falling apart through out the film, but wasn’t it designed to come together and come apart easily? Seems to me that would make it weaker physically.

So if Ultron is using Stark tech, it seems that he could build something very hard to beat if he picks and chooses while removing known weaknesses. If that’s how the movie explains Ultrons origin, I would have no problem with him being a very powerful being.

      • Falling apart all the time? I got one of those in the garage!

  26. Hail Hydra.

  27. On a separate note, that is a great teaser. Glad they released it as it is only a teaser and nothing major, and helps build excitement for the film. Just thinking about it now, when WB announced the Affleck casting they should have released a segment with just Affleck and Cavil voicing over and then gone into the Batman/Superman logo. Not looking to start a MvDC post, just saying that would have been cool too. Anyway bring on 2015 :)

  28. The intention of this teaser was to get me pumped for Avengers 2…and it totally worked.

  29. It excites me greatly
