Amazing Spider Man 2 Electro Faceoff Sony Testing The Amazing Spider Man 2 Subtitles With Audiences

To subtitle or not to subtitle?” It’s a tricky question for which there seems to be no steadfast rule, not even within the sub-genre of comic book movies. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World and The Avengers: Age of Ultron have indulged in the subtitle format, but Iron Man 2 & 3 settled for simple numbering to distinguish themselves from one another.

Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man faced the challenge of being a reboot that was pieced together in only a short space of time after the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy, which also happened to be extremely successful, and therefore having to distinguish itself. It seems like one simple way to accomplish that would be to eschew the simple numerical system of Spider-Man 1, 2 & 3 and instead come up with a creative subtitle for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it seems that this is exactly what Sony has in mind.

Just when we though Lucasfilm and Disney would have trouble subtitling Star Wars: Episode VIICBM received a tip from a reader, Jeff White, who claimed to have recently attended a screening of Captain Phillips at Mall of America. Prior to the start of the film, two representatives from Sony’s marketing department were asking audience members for their opinions on three possible subtitles for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The first option was The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Price of Power, the second was The Amazing Spider Man 2: With Great Power, but White couldn’t recall the last of the possible subtitles. This may well be a reflection on how memorable it was.

Both of the subtitles he could recall are a riff on Peter Parker’s mantra, “With great power comes great responsibility.” While it’s a great and memorable soundbite, it doesn’t necessarily make for a good subtitle and makes the film sound more like a political thriller than a superhero movie. If any Screen Rant readers have been quizzed by Sony’s marketing people at screenings, let us know in the comments if the third option was any better.

One alternative option would be to go the same direction as The Avengers: Age of Ultron and base the subtitle around The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s main villain, but that is somewhat complicated by the fact that there are multiple villains being introduced. Teaser images have indicated that the Ravencroft Institute, an asylum for criminally insane and superpowered villains, will serve as the location of some kind of setpiece – most likely the breakout of a whole team of bad guys. Electro (Jamie Foxx) seems to be the most prominent new antagonist, but a title along the lines of The Amazing Spider-Man vs. Electro doesn’t really capture the spirit of a movie with a larger villain showcase, and one that could be leading to a Sinister Six introduction.

Do you like either of the subtitles suggested, or can you come up with something better? I’m hoping that they just stick with The Amazing Spider-Man 2; anything much longer than that is going to become a real pain to type out.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Subtitle TBC is out in theaters on May 2nd 2014.

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man: Web Slinging in the rain

  2. The Amazing Spider-Man: What does Fox Studio Say?

    • please stop

      • Roorooroo-ri-rah-Roo!!!!

    • The Amazing Spider-Man: Our Electro Is Urban!

      • Wtf do you mean by that? Don’t say sh#t on here that you would never say to someone’s face.

        • I see you’re new here. Welcome to the Internet.

        • To bother typing anything at all is unprofessional. No need, especially with all the other stuff that gets slung on this site. Very out of character.

          • @MovieB – It was out of character because it wasn’t Vic. It was someone pretending to be Vic and they’ve been dealt with.

            Paul Young – Moderator

            • Well, that makes more sense. Is that why his name wasn’t yellow?

Thanks for the clear up, that’s happened a few times lately. Dang trolls.

              • I think if you have a web site your name will be yellow. You don’t have to be staff.

        • He’s probably writing it from the safety of his mother’s basement with one hand down his shorts.

      • ‘Age of Electro’

        • That would be good but there are more villains than just electro

      • The Electro is black because he is black in the Ultimate Spider Man comics, which is what this film is based on.

  3. the amazing spider man 2: envious of the avengers

  4. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ was already 4 syllables too long. Maybe swap out ‘Amazing’ with other iconic Spidey adjectives for each sequel. Call this one ‘The Spectacular Spider-Man’ and the 3rd ‘The Sensational Spider-Man’ and so on.

    • That’s what I’ve been saying! The last movie would be “The Ultimate Spider man”.

Personally, having numbers in the title again just sounds lazy, and these subtitles are kind of weak.

    • Please, Please, Please use Spectacular Spider-Man. It would be FANTASTIC. and isnt it the second oldest book for him?/????

    • @Killjoy- I agree. That would be the best. It was rumoures 4 or 5 months ago that that was the way they were going. The Spectacular Spiderman!

    • Yes. This!

The only reasons I can think of for them to avoid this is that they’re saving these adjectives for the next reboot, or they think people will be confused at the chronology.

Seriously though.. I know people who accidentally introduced their kids to the original Star Wars trilogy out of order… and those have episode numbers. If people can figure out the Harry Potter series, they can figure out an adjective change. And if they can’t, then it’s doubtful they care enough about the story for it to matter.

      • I’d do Spectacular for the second, Sensational for the third, and Superior for the fourth (and last) but Superior wouldn’t be based off the actual comic series. If just take the title like Avengers 2 did :P

    • Well, the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars Episode (insert number) are pretty long. Oh and the Harry Potters all have really long titles. Although I do like where your idea is going

  5. I first misread it as “The Prince of Power” which would have been ridiculous. “Price of Power” is okay. “The Amazing Spider-Man With Great Power” is sorta campy.
BTW: The current German subtitle for the film is incredibly dull: “The Amazing Spider-Man: Die Rückkehr des Helden” (“Return of the Hero”)…

  6. the amazing spiderman: return of jafar!

  7. “The Amazing Spider-Man” is quite long already. Instead of adding subtitle, I think it would be better to swap the “Amazing” with another word or just add number at the end.

  8. To start off, I’m probably going to delve into minor spoilers (nothing surprising if you’ve read the comics and/or have read the articles about this movie on the site). But, if you want to stay clear of them, you should stop reading now. Also, this analysis below assumes we have to pick between “The Price of Power” and “With Great Power:”

Anyways, for both “The Price of Power” and “With Great Power,” we’re definitely getting a sense that this movie’s going to expand on the burden that comes with being Spider-Man. This makes sense since Spider-Man (allegedly) meets Electro even before Electro becomes a supervillain in the film. So, the subtitle, by encapsulating that being Spider-Man comes with power, the film will complete the famous quote by showing the responsibilities (i.e. sacrifices) that come along with the mantle of Spider-Man. As a result, we can figure out that Sony really wants to sell this power angle through its sub-title

But, which sub-title is better? Honestly, I believe tit depends on Gwen’s fate in the movie. I know that a lot of us are speculating that she may die by the close of this film. And, if she does, “The Price of Power” just sounds like the more impactful sub-title. Just like the other, it delivers that element that Spider-Man has power. But, unlike the other one, it seems darker. “With Great Power” evokes the famous quote we all know. “The Price of Power” also reminds us of the quote (although, not directly), but it emphasizes price (i.e. loss) that Spider-Man suffers. What bigger loss is there than the love of his life? So, if Gwen is to die in this sequel, I think “The Price of Power” fits better.

Conversely, if she lives, “The Price of Power” wouldn’t fit. For that sub-title to fit, there has to be a price that Peter must pay. We know he won’t kill the bad guys (thanks to Sinister Six confirmation). He’s not losing his friendship with Harry (establishing the friendship and breaking it in the same movie wouldn’t work). He can’t simply just break up with Gwen (been there too many times between the two series to care anymore). So, there’s no major decision that Peter has to make that justifies “Price,” (unless they’ve managed to hide a major surprise from us). In this case, “With Great Power” would do better as it would complete the task without bringing unneeded/distracting connotation with it.

tl;dr- If Gwen kicks the bucket, they should go with “The Price of Power.” Otherwise, just stick with “With Great Power.”

    • I suspect ‘power’ is also a reference to Electro’s electrical power ie a literal use of the word

  9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 DOES sound uncinematic. But its really difficult to give it a follow up title. The Amazing Spider-Man: Part II also sounds uncalled for. I think either changing “Amazing” to something else…”Astounding” “Spectacular” “Fantastic” “Outstanding” “Extraordinary” THE OUTSTANDING SPIDER-MAN. Or give the subtitle a much shorter direct title. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: HERO, The Amazing SPIDER-MAN: VICTOR. I mean, if i knew more about the plot of the film, i would know and give it a better name.

  10. The Amazing Spider Man of Web Rises: Age of Electro & The Rhino Soldier in our Dark World

  11. Good one. Sony, take note.

  12. Yes Agree. The main title is already too long.
They need to change some words… hmm how about:

“The Chronicles of Spider-wick”.. oops my bad.

  13. Sounds like both subtitles are riffing on that line but also using Electro’s power (over…well, power, of the electrical kind) too.

Both sound horrendous though. I’d rather not subtitle it. Besides, I’d just shorten it to “Spider-Man 2″ anyway.

  14. Sounds cheesy. I already think the next Pirates film title is a mouthful. While I love Thor and Cap having subtitles, in this case can’t we just stick to the numbering?

  15. The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Catch Sony, i solved the problem with being too long or screwing up options for future reboots with changing Amazing to Spectacular or Ultimate, no need to thank me.

  16. The Amazing Sider-Man 2: Age of Power

  17. The Amazing Spiderman: Electric Boogaloo

    ’nuff said

  18. What about…

    The Great Power of Spider-man
    The Power of Spider-man

  19. The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Ultimate Battle

  20. The Amazing Spider-Man: Power and Predjudice

  21. Age of Electro, why not?

Seriiusly, is it really that hard to make a good title? “The price of power”, wow, sounds like a video game from the 90′s.

  22. The best way they could really name it would be Spectacular Spider-Man imo. Subtitles won’t work as well as that.

  23. When I saw the headline, I thought they were testing the movie itself with actual subtitles on screen. LOL The Amazing Spider-man 2: The Passion of the Peter

  24. Spider-Man: Enter Electro

  25. The Amazing Spiderman Rises. Jk How about The Amazing Spiderman; Downfall or The Amazing Spiderman; Descent. One last one The Amazing Spiderman; Road to Ruin (just something that sounded kind of cool.)

  26. Oh, another The Amazing Spiderman; Infinite

  27. Just take off The and call it Amazing Spiderman 2. BAM! You welcome :D

    • And less typing for you too Shaw
