The Adjustment Bureau movie trailer

Universal Pictures has released the full trailer for the Matt Damon/Emily Blunt flick The Adjustment Bureau – a film based on a short story by sci-fi author Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner) which was adapted for the screen and directed by George Nolfi (co-screenwriter of The Bourne Ultimatum).

The Adjustment Bureau tells the tale of David Norris (Damon), an up-and-coming New York politician who meets and falls in love with a foreign, professional ballerina (Blunt).  Fate literally conspires to keep the two apart as Norris discovers that his destiny – and everyone else’s for that matter – is controlled by a mysterious group of men dressed in matching fedoras and business suits.

You can have a look at the trailer below (via Yahoo! Movies):

This trailer brings to mind memories of last year’s Richard Kelly film The Box, another sci-fi/paranoia thriller based on a short story by an acclaimed author that revolved around a philosophical dilemma concerning free will and the ability of everyday individuals to control their lives.

That film also involved a villainous stranger in a fedora-like hat but that might just be a coincidence. ;)

The-Box-Movie

Seriously, would you trust a guy who wears a hat like that?

The mysterious men who control Fate itself in The Adjustment Bureau trailer seem to lack the distinctly eery, disturbing air of Frank Langella’s gentleman from The Box (for obvious reasons – see above).  Their less outwardly dangerous demeanors could lend them a more formidable presence in the film since they appear to be all-powerful and thus have no need to look threatening.

George Nofi will be making his directorial debut with The Adjustment Bureau, a fact that in part accounts for the ordinary cinematography and design of the footage in the film’s trailer.  He has already proven that he can construct a sensible, fast-paced thriller – something which The Box arguably was anything but – with his work on the third Bourne film so hopefully that will be the case with this new Matt Damon vehicle as well.

Working also in the film’s favor is the added presence of such top-notch performers as Emily Blunt (The Wolfman), John Slattery (Iron Man 2), and Terence Stamp (Valkyrie).  Whether they’ll be able to prevent the film from becoming yet another doldrum adaptation of a Philip K. Dick “man on the run” story (a la Paycheck, Next) and instead rank among the better movies based on his work (the underrated Minority Report being the best example) remains to be seen.

So what do you think?  Does The Adjustment Bureau looks intriguing?

The Adjustment Bureau hits theaters in the U.S. on September 17, 2010.

  1. Looks promising PKs movies are usually a big hit for me or a big miss. I will see it.

  2. the guy does look like langella from The Box. and the Box sucked. But this movie looks interesting. its a nice concept that isnt seen much in movies and doesnt look overthe top effects driven. Damon is an alright actor and it looks like a nice film he did inbetween a higher budget award driven movie. not going to leave a long lasting impression in the film world but i dont think it will be a terrible movie like The Box was.

    • Matt Damon is an alright actor? Matt Damon is an AMAZING actor (The Informant!, The Talented Mr Ripley, Good Will Hunting, Invictus etc…)

This film looks very good but I really think that they could’ve given less away in the trailer. I’m hoping for some good twists in the movie but I think the trailer will ruin the movie. Hope I’m wrong though! Bring on September…

  3. I remember a Twilight Zone Episode from the late 80′s run of the show where a similiar story played out. Some guy managed to slip behind the sceens and caught glimpse of the people behind everything from the construction of the roads to the littel props, basically the stage buidlers of reality. Think of the opposite of the Langoliers (Stephen King) .

    The trailer looks awesome.

    • My thoughts exactly. I remember that episode. One of my favorites.

    • I remember that episode. It’s amazing how many movies are made out of stories from the 80′s Twilight Zone.

  4. If it’s a Philip K. Dick story brought to the screen I’m all over it! This makes the 9th film (excluding T.V. and VG’s) that have come from his stories.

    Can’t wait!

  5. I’m in. I’m a sucker for PKD stories. NEXT was an abomination of what could have been a great adaptation of The Golden Man. Minority Report was an OVER-adaptation. Personally, I think Bladerunner is still, to date, the best adaptation of a PKD story. Sorry Total Recall.

  6. Minority Report is the “best example”? I guess you’ve never heard of Blade Runner.

    • I meant in terms of the PK stories revolving around a man on the run trying to survive/not be captured. Blade Runner is more of a noirish detective story/sci-fi mashup in my mind.

  7. Aren’t there already a group of guys who do the same thing in the TV show Fringe?

  8. Gotta say I like the look of this. I see what you mean about this having a feel like The Box…I just hope it’s better than that POS.

To me this also has a Dark City type of feel, but that’s what I think. Looking forward to seeing more, that’s for sure:)

  9. I’ll watch it because I’m a huge fan of Matt’s but the story seems a little too incredible, and it doesn’t seem to give his character much odds of success no matter how hard he tries or how skillful his is…all I can say is that there must be an angle in favor of him since he was NOT suppose to see the girl again, maybe something is lurking in his favor???? I’ll be there with ya Matt, hang tight!
