The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards, to take place February 24, 2008. Unless the writers strike forces a delay, or, shudder, a Golden Globes-like press conference.

So here are my brief thoughts: Interesting that Cate Blanchett is nominated in both the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories. Will that cancel her out? Why is George Clooney nominated? His track record of late is pretty poor, with more bombs than hits. Is it his political activism that has put him on the list? I do want to see Michael Clayton, though.
To be fair, there are a lot of nominated movies I need to watch, so no predictions from me. However, I’d say it’s a lock that the Coen Bros. may win their first Directing Oscar for No Country for Old Men and Diablo Cody will win an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Juno.

ATONEMENT’s not going to win Best Picture. Period. If it stood a real chance, it would have been nominated for Director and Editing. Its in the “the nomination is an honor on its own” category (i.e. no chance in Hell it wins!)
If any film’s going to “pull a CRASH” over NO COUNTRY, its MICHAEL CLAYTON imo.
Juno doesn’t deserve to be on the Best Picture list. Fortunately there’s stiff competition and it won’t win. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t a terrible movie, but it’s def not Best Picture material. Just my thoughts.
If Javier Bardem doesn’t win Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Chughur in “No Country for Old Men”, I’m going to have go to Hollywood and blow something up.

I’m glad Heath posted this because I just don’t follow a lot of the movies that end up on the Oscar list. BTW, “Juno” is a movie website favorite, people who run sites have been raving about it for months. I still haven’t seen it myself.

If Atonement wins best picture I hope the Klingons invade the Kodak theatre and transport the production staff out of cell phone range. Take away there online capabilities and they be dead within hours.

I’ve seen all the films nominated except for There will be Blood which hasn’t been released here as far as I know. Michael Clayton in my opinion is the best and should appeal to the masses. Marion in La Vie on Rose is superb and I would love her to win – I saw it twice and cried both times but I doubt the yanks will vote for anythig foreign. It’s a pity.

I see a Movie in theatre every week yet ive seen only 1 of the 5 best picture nominees.
They always pick theones that don’t make money, and then those 5 films somehow get into every other category like screenplay and cinematography
